Dead Space : about creating an atmosphere

True...Especially if you have read the comics before playing the game. And the missions, even though they are just an excuse for blasting necromorphs, kinda make sense. I really love that game !

Well I wasn't impressed by storyline (it's certainly not Silent Hill 2), and out of the whole "survival horror" thing I thought this game only did the "survival" part right, but I like it a lot nonetheless. The game is tense (as some people already said before, you NEED to play it on Hard) even if not a bit scary, and there aren't many new games who achieve that. Also, the zero gravity parts are very well done.
It's kinda like Resident Evil 4 in space, which also isn't scary but pretty damn tense too. If you love survival action, there isn't a better release this year.

Yeah, I actually read the comics and saw the animated movie after I beat the game. So I kind of had a eerie what the hell is going on sort of feeling.

I was actually surprised to find out that it was the godfather engine they used to power the game.

The art direction is amazing .

Plus the Military suit is cool as all hell. Although I still think I preferred the original level 5 suit.

I hate this game! Played it at a friends house, on his PC. Controls suck, i can't describe it, feels like you're crawling through molasses. And the view... aw man, i can't stand, i get the feeling that i'm always dragging my left elbow on a wall or something.

Well controls don't bother me, cause it is a survival horror game after all.. Once your character gets too good at fighting, the "survival" feeling is lost. The camera thing is something you get used to after a while.

*EDIT*
P.S. by the way, all of you looking for some more survival horror games, be on the lookout for "Cryostasis : Sleep Of Reason", a game made by russian developer 1C. English version doesn't seem to be out yet, but should be soon. I started playing russian version just today and it's great so far, very atmospheric. Anyone who is a fan of underground parts in "S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadow of Chernobyl" should check this out.

Here's some footage from game..

Sorry for double posting, but it didn't seem like editing my previous post would bring any response anytime soon, and I'd also like this thread not to die..

So a few weeks passed after finishing this game on "Hard" mode, and I started feeling like playing this again on newly unlocked "Impossible" mode. Anxious for a new challenge, I installed the game again and started playing, only to get a feeling that "Impossible" mode is.. too possible. Seriously, it seems like it's a lot easier than hard mode now, I barely use any health packs and my inventory gets full pretty quick so I even have to throw some of them away. I'm confused.. undecided.. as to whether it's due to me becoming so good at this game after first playthrough or.. some unfortunate bug. Now, I'm only finishing chapter 2 yet, so it may get a lot more challenging later.. I'd like to ask you fellow limb cutters - has anyone beat the PC version on "Impossible" mode and what are your feelings about it as compared to the "Hard" mode?

*EDIT* Ok it stopped to seem like "Impossible" is easier than "Hard" after I got my ass kicked a few times in later parts of the game. I'm still disappointed in this difficulty mode though, I was expecting something like a "professional" unlockable mode in Resident Evil 4, which kicked my ass quite a bit even in earlier stages of the game. Ok, enough complaining, on to cutting some more limbs..

I played Cryostasi for three hours. It looks gorgeous but I don't think I've ever been THAT bored by a game and I'm not even kidding. I'm really into Stalker and creepy, atmospheric shooters but this one just failed for me. I...just...hate...it. The storytelling is really bad, there is no reason given to you whatsoever for going back in time and saving souls, three hours later and the level design is still exactly the same, healing through heat is just a lame design decision ( which makes even less sense than medikits ), the action...is not what I would call "action". I...HATE..IT !

True, if you're looking for action, Cryostasis isn't for you. It's more of a horror game, and even though it has guns I wouldn't call it a shooter exactly. Just like Dead Space isn't for those looking for some horror, it's more for action fans. Good that I like both.
Storytelling in Cryostasis however, is MUCH better than in Dead Space in my opinion. Shit, I had already figured out where it was going halfway through the game in Dead Space. No offence but if you've played Cryostasis only for three hours, you're not really liable to comment on whether saving souls has any meaning to it or whatnot.. In this game story unfolds in a rather unconventional manner as opposed to cliche Hollywood style storytelling that's present in Dead Space. Certainly, Cryostasis is not for everyone, and I don't mean to sound like I'm smarter for liking it, don't get me wrong here.. :)

By the way, did you play Russian or English version ? (I don't even know if English version is out yet). I have a feeling translation is likely to fuck up this game's story as writing in Russian version is often pretty complex.

I admit that saving souls probably makes sense in the end but what I meant is that the function isn't introduced at all in the game. Your character goes through a series of flashbacks and then all of a sudden, when you come across a body, the game tells you to do it. I was like "wait...what ? why ?". And once you do it, the game simply tells you that by saving souls, you will unlock additional health and stuff like that. I'm ok with it, and I'm aware that through the sequences you unfold the story and what happenned to the crew but I wish it weren't so direct in the first place. Y'know, the "JUST DO IT" thing.
I guess Cryostasis is not as bad as I make it sound, but I wanted to play it really bad and I probably expected something else, something more conventional maybe. But yeah, I think it will probably disappoint a lot of customers because the trailers make it look like a lot more action-oriented game than it actually is.

Btw I played the russian version with english subtitles. Wanted to 'try' it before buying because the benchmark thingie didn't work on my computer.

EDIT : to put it in a nutshell, I actually expected it to be something along the lines of Dark Corners of the Earth or maybe even Penumbra but it's really not.

No it's not, it's something totaly of it's own, but I gotta say that it does remind me of those games a lot somehow. I wasn't bothered with lack of explanation about what is actually going on, that is actually something I like, and not just in games. I love figuring out meanings on my own and not being spoonfed every detail. I even like when something is left completely open up to interpretation.
Expectations can ruin things, I was lucky enough to not have any expectations at all, just recommendations from my trusted russian friends. I found out about this game only when it was already released, so I picked it up immediately.
Are those subtitles you've played with professional translation or just a quick amateurish fan-made thingy? If they are decent, they might help me introduce this game to some of my friends who cannot speak Russian.
All in all, it does seem like "love it or hate it" type of game which is going to divide gamer's opinions. I am looking forward to seeing what other people think of it. Regardless of whether one thinks this game "failed" or not, it does deserve a credit for trying something different. And it does work for me.

I recently bought deadspace for the PC, and while i absolutely love the atmosphere, the story is borrowed (some might say damn near ripped off) from just about every sci-fi alien movie out there, the controls just plain suck, your view of the world is obstructed at all times because of the 3rd person fixed camera view... aiming while moving is possible but frustrating, the inventory system is a pain in the ass to deal with and the hotkeys require a serious re-mapping to be somewhat close to PC friendly.

Once again : did you turn V-Sync off in the game menu and force it on with your drivers ? It is most likely to fix the terrible controls. Once I did it, the game got very playable ( no different from most 3rd person shooters that is ).

EDIT : also, make sure you force 16xQ AA and 16x AF in your drivers for extra sharpness and eye candy because ingame antialiasing does not do much.
Here is how the game looks once these are forced through the drivers : no more nasty aliasing.

MrBumble - do you have ATI or Nvidia card? I have Nvidia and forcing antialiasing doesn't work for me at all, just anisotropic filtering. And in game antialiasing isn't real, it's fake "blur AA", the game actually looks better without it, with clearer image. So I suggest to everyone to turn it off.
What's so particularly horrible about controls with in-game v-sync on? Cause I've been using it, and didn't notice anything bad besides what seemed like usual survival-horror game control quirks.

You can't force AA and AF via the drivers in Dead Space. It's impossible, because the engine does not support it. MrBumble has mistaken the game engine's own 'fake' AA for the driver's AA. Also, the v-sync bug happens only in Vista.

AF DOES work, I've tried turning it on/off several times in several locations and it really does make a difference. Screenshots from MrBumble do look kinda blurry, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's indeed that fake AA.
