Dead Space : about creating an atmosphere

It's funny how in the interview they keep saying you can't re-use too much elements, maybe use them twice in a 20-hour game, just like a punchline in a comedy flick, and then you see the actual in-game examples and... they all look the same. All of them. Sjesus...

A little less conversation, a little more innovation, please.

I'm playing it right now and it's not that bad.

It is essentially RE4 in space with time-slowing powers.

The only thing that's really bothering me is how little thought they put into teaching you how to kill the damn monsters.

The first major sign of this is how often they tell you to dismember the aliens. 20 minutes in and they've told me about 5 times that only dismemberment seems to kill them.

Playing it on the "impossible" difficulty setting now and I find that it really sets the game apart from RE4 in space. I'm constantly out of ammo and health and baddies routinely one-shot me like im a Super Mutant on the wrong end of a Bozar. I feel like playing on this difficulty really makes the game closer to a true survival horror.

Saw a friend of mine play Dead Space the other night.

Seems like a traditional TPS with survival horror elements mixed in.

I don't think it's anything new and revolutionary.

But it sure as hell looked fun.

oh god, not again...

i'm so sick and tired of bullettime shit.

Yep, I barely use it because it's so pointless.

The only thing I use it for is solving puzzles and even then, I feel like it doesn't really belong in the game.

well, it totally depends on the setting and story.

quite frankly, i accepted the time-slowing powers of the operative in F.E.A.R. because he's supposedly special (for various reasons), because it was supposedly his reaction time that was boosted by a fuckton, not as much slowing anything, as much as him speeding up with a semi-decent explanation why he had that skill. but when EP came out, i was like "wtf" the operator (a different guy) had the same shit, for no reason whatsoever. he wasn't even really involved or anything.

anyhow, some games pull it off fine, but this is bullshit. every fucking game has it nowadays (either speeding up the char or slowing down the opponents).

I just beat it.

All in all, I'd say it's worth a rental if you're into killing monsters.

Pros:
Monster go smoosh and bang
Seamless flow of information
Zero-G combat is freaky

Cons:
Not Scary
Bad Story (even for a horror game)
Three Weapons are shotgun analogues (There are 7 weapons)
Zero-G Basketball is stupid.
All the monsters are the same (except for Fetus Tentacle Monster)
For an advanced Alien Race, they sure do a good job of evolving glowing weak spots.

I just got a refund for the PC version.

The controls are so bad, they lag so you can expect a half second response time when moving or correcting your aim. Also you can't really strafe properly while moving forwards, and manipulating inventory items is cumbersome and will get you killed. Think of opening the inventory and fumbling for bandages/medkits in STALKER while being showered with grenades and hot lead - only you can't use the mouse, the select item keys are mapped to the arrow keys. Also, the checkpoint system strikes me as completely pointless and archaic.

It's a shame really. It could have been a great game, if not for money grabbing EA and their cheap ports.

I'm really enjoying this game on the PC. The combat style and unique interface/HUD are really well done. That being said...

CONS:
Isaac never says anything. (one of the things I liked most about Prey was Tommy's comments on certain situations.)

Locked controls that cannot be changed. (namely the arrow keys and the number keypad. I'd enjoy this game so much more if I could remap these keys)

Bad V-sync implementation. (lags the game. Better to leave it off in game and force it on in your drivers).

PC version feeling like an afterthought. (Mostly in the controls area, but it's way better then any other console port I've played before... minus the un-remappable keys. I just jack up the mouse slider all the way to make it more fluid. The only downside is a crazy fast mouse in menu's, but that's only a slight problem when using a save station.)

Save Stations! (It's bad enough you can't save whenever you want to, but these stations are often too far apart. I experience random crashes, and it really sucks to continually redo stuff constantly. I had to redo the intro 4 times.)

BTW I've lessened my crashes by disabling AA. I play at 1920x1200 with everything maxed, and I can't really tell the difference at that resolution with AA off.

The crashes are related to running the game in fullscreen.

Keep it windowed, and you shouldn't crash.

The C++ runtime crashes are because the game is picking up on a peripheral it doesn't like (game controllers left plugged in).

Quite a buggy mess it is.

doesn't keeping a DX app windowed severely degrade performance?

Share for the PC version of Dead Space. Also, from the reviews, while would be a great rental - not worth keeping around. Can't rent PC games around here :(

In my experience, as long as it isn't a maximized window, you shouldn't be seeing any real drop in performance.

Thought of cancelling my Fallout 3 pre-order ( yeah, I know ) and getting Dead Space instead. So, is it that bad as far as controls are concerned ? Because I'm sure not going to cancel a shitty game for another...

It is that bad.

The controls are the worst I have ever experienced. The mouse aiming is slippery and erratic, the keyboard movement is unresponsive. The inventory is mapped to your arrow keys and forces you to take your hand off the mouse. It's not totally unplayable, but it certainly is enough to detract from the experience. I'd go with Fallout 3, it seems to be better value especially with the potential for modding.

Aww man...fuck that. I don't want to buy it on the 360. Want to play it on my screen with my headphones on. Shit...Guess I'll have to pass on this one too.
