Death of a Hobby.

On the OP's topic, I'm leaning towards gaming devolving a stagnant medium that is more focused on monetary profit than exploring the boundaries of creativity through an interactive medium. Much of gaming these days seem to be aimed at being mindless fun or following trends rather than exploring the medium (unlike indie games and niche titles that seem to get it in a way). The problem presumably is a result of games wanting to become more cinematic and trending which causes something to be lost to the medium when games are altered to fit into that ideal.

I'm sure there will be games that breaks away from those trends and attempt to go back to that exploring I mentioned but I doubt the medium would do so in its current state and it certainly won't be helped by the younger generation of gamers that frequently mistake critique for hate and rely on trends (and the herd mentality) to determine their opinions. The fact that many gamers would criticise reviews for giving too low scores or for raising certain points that the majority don't agree with is disheartening (though I understand criticism if the reviewer is attempting to push an agenda in their negative review or is unable to critique the product properly).

That said, I pray that the good indie and niche games are able to fill the void being made by modern trending games.

And yet people still believe Skyrim is superior.
...This is why video games are stagnating... Those people are giving bad feedback to developers that lead to developers following the wrong trends. Even Obsidian's CEO believes that their games have to be more like Skyrim to succeed which is IMO the wrong approach to take (http://www.pcgamer.com/obsidian-ceo-id-love-to-turn-eternity-into-more-like-a-skyrim-product/)

Half Life 2 Episode 3
I think you meant Episode 2? 3 never did come out after all...

I guess, What i'm trying to say is, How are you guys handling the fact such masterpieces aren't being made as they were years ago? What will you do when the video games industry crashes? Also, how does it feel to know younger generations are going to grow up and associate games with just grindy wacky crazy paywalls with micro-transactions everywhere?
Question I got right back at ya would be; How many "old school classics" can you use as an example of being a "masterpiece" if Planescape was off the table?

Stupid people are the reason the gaming industry is what it is today, not the publishers. So long as stupid people play games, publishers will appeal to them and feed off of them.
True. When you think about it, what kind of idiot would trust a website to tell them what games are worth playing when they get ad money and review copies from the game company? At least with a magazine, the readers pay them for a slice of the cake.

Hype trumps everything. That is the key to Skyrim's success.

People are slowly developing more tools that makes video game development easier. Once OpenMW-CS 1.0 gets released, Bethesda going to be facing some tough competition.

Other than the original fallouts? Some people would also say the baldur's gate series even though i think the second one came out in 2001. Some also like Arcanum. You got Doom, Quake, Wolfinstine. Wing Commander series. Probably some others i can't recall entirely.

Plus it's probably the main reason why Fallout 4 sold so well. I remember how quickly Bethesda allowed for pre-orders for Fallout 4 despite only seeing the E3 promo materials, it was tactically sound of Bethesda to bank on the hype they generated and even after that, people were already declaring Fallout 4 to be game of the year even when it had not even seen the light of day.

It's why I hate hype culture so much. This simple chart explains why hype is also not beneficial for gamers as well:

Not a big fan of the combat and it crashes a little too often.
I will admit it's not perfect (but I'll be damned if someone tells me it isn't near-perfect). But it was limited because of its engine, and it could've used more C&C. But it's better than anything Ubishit or Bethshit or E... Eshit have put out.

I was never really a fan of fantasy setting. That is probably what attracted me to Fallout in the first place. Still it has a nice grim atmosphere to it.

Fallout would've benefited from the racing system, but I'm glad it wasn't included- who knows how much stuff would have to have been cut to fit it in.

Oh shit, have I given Bethesda an idea? Will Fallout 5 have settlements and racing? Find out in DLC.

Gamebryo? Vehicles? Please keep speculations to the realm of possibility. Bethesda too incompetent for that.

And yet the future refuses to change.

Oh yeah, how could i forget the old command and conquer games. Anyways, back on topic. You may have outliers like the witcher games, But mostly i think on average a lot of triple A games have been dropping in scores and a lot of failed hype trains to games that haven't made it to said hype. (NMS,Destiny,Fallout 4) All of these games have in common massive hype and it all just dies down once the game comes out. I would like to hope for a change in things, in direction and focus. I think if you focus on making a game great with sound game design and principle instead of trying to market to everyone as possible. It would yield better results. When you try to please everyone you please no one.

If Bethesda Game Studios can pull it off there will be racing in Fallout 5. Nothing says Fallout than Mad Max style combat races.

Toddie : we are proud to announce our second year of DLC for Fallout 5.
Wasteland RoadLord - customize an ice cream van. $4.99
Mothership Quantum - a nuka cola powered spaceship, fully upgradable and rideable. $2.99
Mad hacks - allows the use of console command on consoles. $.049
We know you guys liked Deceased Currency, so that's why we're making - "Trainscape Torment" which allows you to micro manage your very own wasteland train. Take back the wastes with your new raider gang, the conductors. $799.99

1) I don't handle it as a fact, POE and Divinity: Original Sins are some of my favorite games, so are The Witcher, NWN: MOTB, Fallout: New Vegas etc.

2) If the industry crashes, i will play the plethora of games i have not yet played - there are more than enough of them for a lifetime.

3) Younger generations have it too good as it is, they are growing up with the internet and have the benefit of playing the classics + the new shiny games.
