Deathclaw hunting tips

Nah just a general sentiment ,some people might think Snipe camping is cheap, but those creatures deserve it.

For all my multiple runs of New Vegas I have never killed the Legendary Deathclaw, I got inside the Wind Cave by accident once and since them I have avoided that place like a motherfucker. Even the Deathclaw Promotory, that place is just a deathtrap.

There's an auto-grenade launcher in there, and if you're super-duper lucky - you can shoot several grenades into the corner where the legendary male resides, and get some critical damage on him - of course, with luck. Once he storms out, give him everything you got with the LMG, while taking his claws right to your helpless face

Then reload previous save, and try again, and again... :D

One of the reasons I stay as far from that place as possible is that there is so many deathclaws, and no room to move. So much death.

The benefit of that place is that you can isolate them a bit. Bring a companion w a killer weapon, like Cassidy with Dinner Bell and slug shells, and try to separate the various battles. Right away is tricky, cus you might get 2-3 death-claws on you right past the entrance. Heroic scream, and spray them with LMG is my approach. From there on, it's much easyer, as the rest are youngsters and scattered loners. The mother is surprisingly easy to take out - which leaves the legendary male as the only real challenge in there

on the contrary, the death-claw location on the other side of the river has no heights you can use, and there's no way to separate them, they all come at you at once. I have so far not survived their assaults in any honest way

What? Deathclaw Promontory? There are sniper places. I have dealt with them from the cliffs closest to the river. guessing you did not have a stealthboy?

This is kindov fun! We're swapping "what? that's not so difficult - " advice! And no, I rarely use drugs/drug-like effects tactically. Not out of some decision, I just... never made a habit of it. I often think about it in retrospect. My main problem is approaching the area at all, they sniff me out, and come right for me, but you got a point there... stealth boy would make things a bit easyer.

What I originally meant was that if you look around the promontory, there are something you would call sniper perches that you can jump on that the Deathclaws cannot reach, and then you can snipe them from there. I have cleared it out before, so I would know. :)

Yes, yes, I getcha. I just never had a real oportunity to check for sniper-spots, cus I usually came under attack as soon as I got up there. Since I only ever "won" by console-coding them to death, I didn't give the area much more attention than to scoop up the loot, and bail :D
But yeah, bring a stealth boy, not bad advice...
In the whole game I only use stealth boy once, and that is the Gun Runner hacking mission.

Aim for the eyes.

Seriously though, the key to taking out Deathclaws in NV is to snipe at them from where they can't reach you, and ideally from far enough away that they can't even see you.

Or cripple the legs. Explosives are pretty good for doing this en mass. The promontory (and if you're excruciatingly careful or feeling lucky, Dead Wind Cavern) are two of the best places in the game for getting earnest use out of the Fat Man or Red Glare. On most attempts, none of the claws even get within scratching distance unless the few hanging out by the entrance get lucky.

(Technically speaking, I guess that would count as sniping, but I'm sure Boone would probably dock you points for poor form.)

The trick to getting a Deathclaw is sneaking up to it from behind and sticking your thumb right up it's butthole. That should really piss it off.

Was beating Lonesome Road just now, I accidentally walked into Rawr's domain, the entire segment was pretty hilarious as I actually realized where I was as the Holotape started playing and I heard the Trooper screaming about the HUGE Deathclaw and the entrance collapsed behind me.... I pumped my self with a Slasher, Turbo and Tru Police Stories Smoothie and shot at the thing with the K-9000 loaded with JFP rounds and just kept the button pressed until the fucker was dead.... I think I have found the courage to go into Deadwind Cavern now.

The only Dog companion I need is a fully moded K9000.

The Promontory was very traumatic for me, no matter how many deathclaws I killed, they just kept on coming. Eventually I found a place by the cliffs with no deathclaws in the immediate area, mined the everloving shit out of it, and all approaches, and fired off a shot. A couple of deathclaws fell prey to the mines, a couple more to my 12.7mm SMG and plasma grenades, when I looked like being overrun, I threw myself off the cliff as an escape route. I was then able to head across the river and pump them full of rifle fire.

Anti-material Rifle with explosive rounds and a Protonic Inversal Axe with appropriate perks for the former. Can one-shot the little ones sometimes, even on hardcore.
