I think both should be used extremely sparingly but why do you think that?
Aliens expand the universe too much into a direction I dont like. Fallout should be contained in america preferable the west and slowly expand its scope with each game. Fallout has nothing to do with space or aliens but ghosts can be used to help the original games tone of total death and annihilation and mourning. They should be used sparingly sure but I wouldnt mind ghosts of the old war being a rumor and or encounters in the wastes.

I guess ghosts are a bit more mysterious than aliens are. Whenever I see an alien in a video game im like "alright, an alien". When I I think Ive seen a ghost or triggered a "chill down your back" alert, I believe it more. It seems more real to have ghosts than aliens.
I consider Fallout to be more serious than other games. Believe me, aliens are not serious. Seeing the wannamingos left a bad taste in my mouth. They were like a half ass joke added to the game.
EDIT: now that you mention it, Mothership Zeta may have been the worst dlc in the history of Fallout.

Wananmingos aren't confirmed aliens tho. It just says alien because their head shape is a reference to alien. The fallout bible gives them the backstory of being another FEV experiment that escaped into the wastes.

You and I agree on the America and the West thing and that's why I think Aliens fit, the more clichéd and Americana in design the better. In terms of supernatural imagery IMO I associate greys and flying saucers with Americana waaay more than ghosts

Although I think ghosts do have their place in echoing the human loss of the Great War, it's a shame they've never been used in that context

Understandable, I now see your point. I just thought that ghosts were a bit sadder and cooler. Like graves said, they sort of fit in better to me personally than aliens.

I am aware of this, however their existance upset their creators so much that Time Cain literally imagined them out of the world. And I am glad. Aliens, talking deathclaws and talking raccoons should not exist in fallout.

Ghosts don't need too much of an explanation. They can kinda just be there. Aliens on the other hand establishes far too much. Ghosts? That means souls or lifeforce remaining after the body passes and that's all that it means. It indicates that there is something after death and that there may be supernatural forces at work although we've yet to see any beyond the capabilities of Psykers (which are rare and limited in powers). But we kinda know what a soul would be then based on human history and the conceptualization of souls. It's grounded in our reality. Aliens? It raises an extremely big question of... Why? Souls? Fuck knows why they exist or whats beyond the veil of death, that's a mystery of life we've yet to factually prove and likely never will and we'll just have to see when we ourselves each pass away. But we don't need to know why they exist. We have an idea of why and whether they exist or not doesn't really affect the real world all that much. But aliens? They're here for a reason. They don't just exist as a force of nature. They are a faction with an agenda. I don't think anything good comes from opening up that window. It can so easily be misused. Just look at Mothership Zeta and Cabot House as examples.

I think that's offset by making them cliche Greys which are self-explanatory and don't evoke a greater space lore, but rather common American mythos

Alright, good explanation. Sorry I just kinda tend to conflate the Tunnelers and Zetans as one big clusterfuck of a mistake of game writing. I understand that Wannamingos are not even aliens but just a failed (not really) experiment. The actual aliens (zetans) were a Bethesda invention no? I cant seem to recall if aliens were even mentioned in Fallout. Ya ya I know that there are the Hubologists with their alien mind-cocaine devices, but was there a full fledged "aliens confirmed" in Fallout?

In the first game there's a crashed flying saucer with a dead alien but it's rightly sectioned off as a random encounter in the strange desert. Completely and perfectly questionable in its reality

Talking Deathclaws should be present; they’re awesome, giant reptilian killing machines who can rip a man in half and think like us.

I'd argue that seeing ghosts and shit fits more than aliens seeing as Fallout 2 has all of those visions and the whole tribal theme with spirits and such, it'd make sense to me at least.
