Do you think Obsidian considers Fallout 3 canon?

If anyone is expecting the old Fallout to return, it won't. I just criticize Bethesda Fallouts because i can.

I still have not played 76 myself.
So basically, that those of us who would be more hardline should.... chill out? To use an expression. Nobody is doubting they will not return, but there is a purpose in telling people why they were better.
Don't get me wrong. I am pro lemon party.

I slogged through many hours of it with s friend. (I received it as a well intentioned Christmas gift) Went from giving it a legitimate go, to playing it because it was so bad it was actually funny, to eventually just straight up not enjoying it.

I will say without any sarcasm the actual worldmap is probably the best one in the series but it's just filled with either vapid meaninglesness or abject crap.

Still prefer it to 4

Surprising but not surprising at the same time.

Lack of story was better than being constantly annoyed. I was able to, at times, enjoy traversing the wilderness of Appalachia listening to the ambient tracks whilst scavenging for survival and travelling alone. Some of the scenes were quite beautiful (the mutant ropevine forest and the cherry bog particularly) There was nothing there to find, but it was nice to wander around all the same.

The commonwealth was ugly and full of annoying crap that wouldn't shut the fuck up. The fallout 76 ambient OST also actually sounds like Fallout as opposed to 4's nautical TES shit

I liked 4 during the first playthrough, but absolutely hated that they gave you the power armor so soon and there was no real progression through the factions. I miss having to earn ranks and respect like they did in Mages guild in Oblivion. You even got commemorative items that were actually useful. Was really disappointing to have no real feeling of achievement through progression. start with simple things until you make your way into leading platoons, or something.

I want to play 76 as I'm actually from WV originally.

I understand you completely man. For what it's worth, Inon Zur is a pretty great composer.

One of the things I prefer about 76 to 4 is that it actually has progression for Power Armor. Its crap progression because it's based off of Borderlands style level locks, but it was my friend and I's hinging objective to construct a suit of T-51b and reach the correct level to wear it. Felt actually powerful when we suited up.

Also one of the things interesting about 76 which I will also congratulate them for is incorporating Fallout's retrofuture. There's tonnes of weird retrofuturistic sci fi structures around West Virginia, and shit like a totally automated robot town or a gigantic gaudy space age monorail system, or big bubble shaped skyhomes in the woods. Something I would love to see in actual Fallout.

i believe the wasteland survival guide in new vegas is more of a survival book written by another author not Moira Brown herself. and is not tied to the Wasteland Survival Guide quest in Fallout 3.

I too like to consider New Vegas Bounties canon.

As far as i know Veronica references a civil war between two BoS factions which i assumed was the BoS Outcasts and Lyon's BoS. though i could be wrong. ED-E also comes from Adam's Airforce Base so there's that though it's not a direct link between new vegas and 3 as Adams Airforce Base could of existed without fallout 3 though it exists within fallout 3.
Itd be interesting to start a thread in the mods that are so good in new vegas that they may as well be considered canon. Because there's quite a few thatd be perfect

If there's any credit I'd give to bethesda on anything. I'll give em credit for world building, atmosphere, and dungeons. Im not gonna lie. The dungeons in Fallout 3 were fun and beyond worth it imo. And fallout 76 graphics wise, looks stunning and I'm 100% behind that ambient. Now if I could get a Fallout game set in the Carolinas with the atmosphere and dungeons of fallout 3, but has the amazing story writing, open choices, factions, moral dilemmas, and overall ambiguity of interplay/obsidian fallouts. Like seriously, I had a wrote a shit load of fan lore for the Carolinas region for the fallout verse

I wouldn't say worldbuilding is a strong suit of Bethesda

Bethesda used to be good at worldbuilding...then they took a nuclear winter to the knee.

it will be interesting how they come out of all this with tes6 and Starfield. I hoping they turn it around for the better.

That's a reference to Fallout Tactics Midwest Brotherhood of Steel. Even Caesar talks about the Midwest Brotherhood too.
My argument is that the Fallouts of yore will not return and to just let the oldies have their lemon party.
You see that little "fan" icon in my signature? That means I liked Fallout 3. :roffle:

I’ve heard this before but I never remember Caesar saying this. When does he say this, and what does he say exactly?

Also, what were the two factions within the Midwestern Brotherhood fighting about?

Obsidian probably not only see it as canon, but they probably thought it was at least decent.
I think we have this fiction in our heads where we believe Obsidian are some kind of 'cool kids' developer who dunk on Todd 'The Nerd' Howard, the reality is, folks there may either enjoy it a degree, or not really think much about it.
Also, Obsidian isn't a single person with a thought, it's made up of different People and they will have their own ideas.
Josh Sawyer for example may see it as canon, and tried to at least get a couple of references in New Vegas to at least bridge the divide between games.
Chris Avellone may also see it as canon but doesn't acknowledge it as why would he?
For design purposes, yes it's canon, much like how New Vegas is canon to Fallout 4, but it's up to the individual on what their head canon is.
Maybe Josh Sawyer doesn't see it as canon and the small number of references were there so if someone wanted F3 to happen... It did. But they are vague enough to let the player make up their own mind.

In all respects, the base proposal probably didn't have to worry as much about Fallout 3 as setting it on the other side of the Country allowed them to do their own thing.
