Doom 3 Goes Gold (Warning - Spoilers Within)

640x480 mode is just plain crap. I think it actually runs faster at 800x600.

They did borrow a lot from System Shock 2 and Half-Life. And it's too dark. I usually never complain about darkness, since it's mostly here and there and devs give you a good torch or a flashlight, but in Doom 3 it's dark EVERYWHERE, and a flashlight doesn't reduce the eye strain. I wonder if the cool lighting effects Doom 3 has cannot be appreciated at normal day lighting - that does not bode well for games based on its engine.

What's your setup like? I'm trying to decide whether or not I should get it, essentially based on whether or not it's going to be playable with decent settings on my system. Without a major overhaul, I think I can go up a bit more on my processor -- just recently upgraded video and RAM -- but I'm not even sure I want to spend that money right now.

So far I've found Doom 3 all a bit "meh" really. I mean, you spend the first hour or so of the game wandering around asking yourself "Where are all the demons I have to kill?" before "it happens" (in the lamest and most predictable way possible) and then all the lights go out and you're left wandering around in the dark.

I like the bit about Multiplayer in the manual: Player against a maximum of 4 players. What is this? 1997?

The graphics don't appear to be any better than UT2k4 and UT2k4 runs faster and uses less system resources than Doom 3. Doom 3 just seems to chug, compared with UT2k4 which has huge levels, a gazillion players and runs smoothly even in a high res.

yeah and more equals better! booyah! bring on the hords of bunnyhoppin braindead UT players (they scare me more than the zombies in D3)!

yeah right

might wanna update your pc hardware, buddy... no way in hell that UT2k4 has the same quality. and if you're reply is that your hardware is already top notch: take out a rag and clean your screen, maybe then you will see the detail and the special effects.

You mean that game that came out 5 years ago? Yeah, I liked that. Wandering around aimlessly was an original idea then. Doom 3 took the same concept and... added absolutely nothing to it. Oh wait, I can talk to people and have useless dialogue like "Don't talk to me buddy, I'm working".

I also like how the main character doesn't say anything in any of the cut scenes. That didn't work for GTA 3, Give the guy some personality, not just a happy smiley, silent grunt.

Yes, more is better.

Detail? I think they hid it all behind the pitch black.

Im using a AMD Athlon XP 2400+
1Gb Ram 333mhz
Geforce 4 Ti 4200
videocard has the latest drivers.

I tried running it on Ultra quality at 1024x768
It was kinda laggy on my system (p4 2.8ghz, 1024 mb ram, radeon 128mb 9800.) Whenever I had to open a door it lagged, fired a gun semi lag, fighting demons lag. I'll have to just tone it down, I guess.

It wasn't laggin nearly as bad as say the leaked alpha or whatever it was.

As for the gameplay, I give it a thumbs up. Doom3 was never meant to be a friggin enormous deathmatch fest, nor were the previous Dooms. id was trying to make a scary ass fps single player experience. For the record, I detest UT multiplayer cause, as SuAside said, its full of bunnyhoppin braindead morons. Give me the multiplayer in Halo any day...its multiplayer is FAR superior to UT.

Haven't tried Doom3 multiplayer yet, and I don't intend to until I beat the single player. But the fact that it has such a low max player count is testament to the fact that Doom3 multiplayer will focus much more on individual skill and compentency, no jumping around like shitfaced n00bs with ADD, laying on the fire button.

There isnt a pc out there that can play Doom 3 on Ultra High settings today.
The engine is made for the future meaning It requires alot to run it at max and its basicly made for mods, the 8 player max is only there becuase it requires a really good connection speed to be able to handle more players.

Damn them if they don't release a demo soon. I want to know if the game runs on my PC before I buy it.

They aren't going to release a demo.

They said they were. And why the hell not? How the fuck am I supposed to know if it works or not? I don't wanna pay 50 bucks for something that won't work.

*EDIT* Yay!

Sure they are...

Demo: our priority was finishing the game first and now we are turning our attention to the demo. I don't have any information to share regarding any specific content, but I don't believe that we have ever disappointed in that regard in the past. We will release the demo as soon as it's done, but this probably won't happen until after the game has arrived on U.S. store shelves.

So they will have a demo, its just a matter of when.

The grandeur of doom's "Can't see shit!" engine is probably overhyped. After reading so many positive comments by those astounded players who witnessed yet another FPS i dont want to play this game. Ever.

I stand corrected. Good thing too, I'm sure it's a good game but I'd rather try it before spending $55.

My original plan was just to play the hell out of the demo when it came out.

Then, my friend got a job at Best Buy, and the discounts that come with it, so I of course had to.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm not a big fan of games where you can take industrial amounts of damage and not die. The two games that I really liked which had that theme are Aliens vs Predator 2 and UT2K4: the first one was interesting until I realized that it's fucking unbalanced and everybody spammed predators and never used the aliens. UT2K4 is something I play when I'm really bored. The mods and vehicles are fine but I got sick soon. Doom 3 can rot for all I care.

Bought it today, more or less because I could, and I'm pretty impressed with it, but it's waaaay to easy on normal difficulty. Not once (after 3 hours of play) has my damage dropped below 80. And I can't be buggered starting it again. The slow ass intro/walk around doing nothing bit sucks, just like it sucked in Half-Life.

Apart from that, as a mindless, stress relieving shoot the crap out of zombies and demons game, it's pretty good. Nice atmosphere in it too, although I admit that the designers seemed to, in some places, confused "atmosphere" with "can't see shit". But mostly I think the lighting is pretty well used.
