Doom 3 Goes Gold (Warning - Spoilers Within)

I love the "slow ass intro/walk around doing nothing" bit in games, it supplies variation and adds to the atmosphere/story/plot. In Doom 3, it might have been unnecessary, but for FPS games with more of a story, it's nearly a must have (Deus ex, and maybe HL).

I'm not a big fan of games where you can take industrial amounts of damage and not die. The two games that I really liked which had that theme are Aliens vs Predator 2 and UT2K4: the first one was interesting until I realized that it's fucking unbalanced and everybody spammed predators and never used the aliens. UT2K4 is something I play when I'm really bored. The mods and vehicles are fine but I got sick soon. Doom 3 can rot for all I care.

so first you go proclaim you dont like games that allow you to take a lot of damage but then you mention 2 games you love but who do exactly just that... go get some rainbow 6 games or something, sjeez.

99,9999999999999999999999% of all games have a hero that is better than the rest dont you think, skynet?

you'd also might wanna try playing all your FPS games on the hardest setting, it's always doable & adds a lot more playtime. that goes for you too volkov

I've got nothing against an intro, but does it have to take so long? The Half-Life train ride was completely unnecessary. The Doom 3 one wasn't quite as bad as that, but I still think it wasn't completely necessary to further the rather thin plot.

Speaking of the plot....

Doom 3 does not have a thin plot. It actually rather immersive, what with all the information you can glean from PDAs, video discs, and the like.

And the opening walkaround wasn't long at all....you can make it longer if you wander aimlessly and explore, but the actual objective was cut and dry.

You might want to try reading peoples posts when arguing with them.
He's saying that those were the ones that are like that which he liked. Not that those are his favourite games.

yes and you have to try understand what i'm saying too

my point was: the two he's talking about are not much different from shitload of others he says he hates... therefore his argumentation is somewhat strange no? doesnt that mean his criteria might in fact be something else instead of what he's proclaiming...

No, SuAside. My argumentation makes this point: the ONLY games where you can take a shitload of damage that I played and sort of liked were AvP 2 and UT2K4. That's the only point I made...you know besides my hating of the Doom series.

I just bought it yesterday. I get to work today and find an email from my friend telling me not to buy it because he got a free copy that he's going to give me.

I hate it when stuff like that happens.

Send your copy to me ;)

BTW Doom multiplayer sucks alot!
Unless a few good mods come out for it I see no point in buying it unless for maybe singelplayer.

The single player's actually alright. The difficulty has been kicked up a notch since I posted last, and the level design and atmosphere are awesome. If you liked Half-Life single player, you'll like Doom, I guess.

Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, and I'm not really looking forward to it either. Sounds boring.

I've been waiting for this game since the early 90's, but I'm shit out of luck with this wonderful computer I have.....

Mohrg

So yeah.... a little update to the Multiplayer situation.

The game only "officially" supports 4 players at once, although we've already seen 8 and 16-player servers pop up.

So, those people who were pissed that you could only play with 4 people have no reason to be angered.

they'll likely get mods reaching maybe even 24 players I guess. (depends on what connections the community for doom3 has really. if they got dailup and stuff they cant go too far on player max or it lags really bad)

Man, this game really makes me feel like a pussy - I can only play for a half hour before I have to turn it off. I even had to get the flashlight/pistol mod. :( It's awesome though, really addicting.

For anyone worried that the game won't run for them, here are my specs:

P4 @ 1.8 GHz
512 MB of PC2100 ram
FX 5600 Ultra

I haven't checked the fps, but it's definitely playable in 800x600 at medium quality. If that scares you, let me point out that "medium quality" at that resolution with this game looks better than most games do maxed out. I should add that my motherboard only supports AGP 4x with a 64MB aperture, so I'm only getting roughly half the performance from my video card that I could.

I haven't played any of the Doom titles, and I doubt I'll be purchasing this Doom 3. I saw some screenshots which looked absolutely stunning and drenched in a macabre amtosphere, but shooters just aren't my thing. I get stressed after a while and I look for cheats. That's how I eventually finished Half-Life and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, to be honest. And Medal of Honour Allied Assault.

I do still like Unreal (multiplayer nostalgia) and Max Payne because of the story and the great way of telling that story (with the comics). And bullet time was a great thing -- in that game only or so it seems. Plus, it's the only game I ever got for a present -- from my ex. :(

No offense but thats kinda funny Montez. thought nobody round here was afraid of the dark. but then again with what goes bump in the dark in Doom 3 I could see why. I use my ears more then my eyes, they sure as hell make a rukus when they're coming towards you. game still scares me though, those hell visions you get now and then are dam freaky. made one hell of a horror game. takes quite a bit to scare me. still get that weird feeling in the gut thinking about that game...

That hell vision you get in the toilets when you look in the mirror surprised the crap out of me. It's not so much scary as it is unsettling and creepy. It's one of the aspects of the game that I really enjoy.

Sooooo...where do you get that flashlight/pistol mod? :D

There's the crappy flashlight pistol mod, and then there's the ULTIMATE light mod.... DUCT TAPE. (they may or may not be the same thing)

I haven't tried it yet, but from what I read, its supposed to be very cool, and the guys who made it have really tried to keep the game feeling the same, just with a little extra light.

You can find it here: http://ducttape.glenmurphy.com/

Under the crazy presumption that a roll of duct tape has to exist somewhere on the Mars facility, the Duct Tape mod sticks flashlights to your machinegun and shotgun. In order to preserve the atmosphere, these new lights are much narrower (and a little brighter) than the standard flashlight, and are only available on the basic weapons. The pistol is not equipped with a flashlight, so as not to spoil the early sections of the game.

Its the handyman's secret weapon.

I'll be getting it somewhere after the demo probably...unless someone has a copy they aren't using.

As for multiplayer, I liked Planetside back in beta. It was ridiculously hard to kill armored troops, but the overall theme was fun. If someone could do that with Battlefield 1942, I'd be set for quite some time.
