Doom 3 Goes Gold (Warning - Spoilers Within)

For anyone worried that the game won't run for them, here are my specs:

P4 @ 1.8 GHz
512 MB of PC2100 ram
FX 5600 Ultra

I haven't checked the fps, but it's definitely playable in 800x600 at medium quality. If that scares you, let me point out that "medium quality" at that resolution with this game looks better than most games do maxed out. I should add that my motherboard only supports AGP 4x with a 64MB aperture, so I'm only getting roughly half the performance from my video card that I could.

That gives me hope, then. Those are pretty much my system specs, but I have an AMD processor and a 9600XT instead. I'll still probably wait for the demo, though. BTW, anyone have any more news on the demo, like an ETA mebbe?

So I just beat Doom 3 on Marine.

I was a little disappointed with the Cyberdemon though. He went down much easier than I thought he would have. It only took like 3 or 4 soulcube shots to put him down. Granted, that meant having to kill 20 or so imps and whatnot, but with the amount of space I had to run around, and the fact that you get unlimited stamina, it was a LOT easier than I thought it would be. You could just dodge the rockets, and it was pretty easy to stay out of the way of his melee attack. It wasn't EASY, but it wasn't impossibly like I was kinda hoping it would be.

He looked freakin cool though.

I heard nightmares better then marine. but i dont think anyone would play it over again. mean one trips through hell and back is prolly enough to scare most folks to the point their pants are brown.

Haha...

Now that Nightmare is unlocked, I plan on starting a new game tomorrow.

Plus, I wanna see if anything changes if I end up cancelling the communication to the fleet.

Holy shit! How much do you play man?

Doom 3 pretty much averages at 23 hours of gameplay. That's pretty good for a high-quality first person shooter in my book.

P.S.
Soul Cube is neat.

And i thought i had problems. once i get into the rythem i can go for a few hours (until dark that is. my light burned out so it gets really dark then, and no i dont have a lighbulb to replace it with at the moment) Im sure as hell i've had nightmares about doom 3 since i wake up in hte middle of the night covered in sweat and it looks like i always seem to be trying to strangle my covers....dont remember the dreams though

Point taken then. but that was just too good to pass up. :?

and yes that game can scare the shit out of you. it really frays the nerves when those things keep popping up outta nowhere. and good ol pinky had one hell of an introduction.

Jesus, I was just ambushed by 50 spiders. What a horrible way to die.

Hey, that's where I first died as well. Those spiders are pretty much the most annoying thing in the entire game.

Cheers for the flashlight mod by the way, but I'm using the duct tape mod. Makes it that little bit easier :D

That hell vision you get in the toilets when you look in the mirror surprised the crap out of me. It's not so much scary as it is unsettling and creepy. It's one of the aspects of the game that I really enjoy.

I was trying to prove to my friend that I was a badass and was flying through the game, dominating all opposers, but then...

What sucks is that my friend heard about that part before and half-heartedly tried it at first to no avail. He said that it was probably another mirror somewhere else, so when I started to play I did it just to make sure... I was basically pwned, and my friend now dubbed me, "super sucky sissy girl".

I've yet to find the chainsaw zombie, but hopefully it lives up to what I've imagined.

I finished it. I have to say that in the end, it was good. Unfortunately, it's only about the Delta complex that it starts to get any good for me. Hell was awesome but you spend all of 15.2 seconds in there before coming back out.

Needs more Hell. Doom should be all about you, a rocket launcher, 5 Mancubus and a hoarde of imps. Not some big bad dude screaming "Stop him!" and yay, for a lone imp appears and tries to kill me. A lone imp. One sole, solitary imp.

... and I'm the hardest skill level! On the other hand, there's some serious over-use of the Death Knights in Site 3 though. It's that time when you kind of ask for a new bad bad scary monster and not just... 5 more Death knights!

Heh. Like the Id Software PDA at the end.

Hopefully Nightmare might be a little more my style.

Hmm... I'd like to ask about a few things that have been mentioned. I don't care about spoilers, as I'm not going to play the game (unless someone gave me a free copy or other such unlikely event), just curious in an abstract way about some things that have been mentioned.

What is this "hell vision" in the bathroom mirrors?

What is the larger plot (I know, I know, not much point of talking about the plot in a shooter), a fleet has been mentioned, and communicating with it. What is that all about?

you look into a mirror and you get a flash of pure evil shite thrown at yeh. scared me pretty good, loved it...

story? you ship in as a security guard & at the same time a UAC boardmember and a bodyguard come to investigate what is wrong with the base (weird shit has been happening), you get to go find a scientist, base turns to shit, you get to shoot zombies, boardmember survives too, you get to shoot more zombies,...,you get to save the day

hooray!

btw i'm also using the ducktape mod but i find the focused light just a tad too bright ... a pitty

VERY SPOILERY STUFF ENSUES, TO THE POINT OF THE ENTIRE PLOT BEING REVEALED...

Ok, Hell Vision in the bathroom:

There are other instances of Hell vision, but the one in the mirror in the bathroom was probably the most frightening. Basically, when you happen to glance in the mirror, the lights shut off real fast, replaced by this red glow, and your vision is like, well its kinda hard to describe, but you can only move the mouse around VERY slowly, and there's all these freaky sounds and, its just a very frightening ordeal.

As for the the plot:
You're a marine that has been assigned to work at Mars City. You get there and you have no idea what is happening. You only learn the plot through little cutscenes and through pdas and stuff.

Basically, the UAC found an ancient civilization on Mars. They found lots of artifacts and stuff. The most important artifacts were these 4 stone tablets and the soulcube. One of the stone tablets details the ancient race's teleportation technology, and gave detailed mathematics on how it worked. The other stone tablets tell how the ancient civilization was all but wiped out by an invading force(which turns out to be hell's demons). SO, the ancient civilization created the soulcube, and they basically sacrifice the majority of their race in order to power the soulcube, cause everyone's essence got stored in there or whatever. Then, the ancient race's most powerful warrior wielded the soulcube, and defeated the forces of hell. The remaining survivors of the ancient race then used their teleportation technology to leave mars, and, some uac scientists believe, went to earth, thereby making humans the descendants of this ancient race.

SO, Delta Labs took the teleportation information on the tablet and began to experiment with it. They began to send through test subjects. The teleportation SHOULD have been instantaneous, however, there was a slight delay. Also, test subjects began to go insane babbling about demons and whatnot. So, they teleported a videodrone through, and it sent back some startling footage. There were EYES in the darkness!! ooooo!! SO, they began to send squads through the teleporter, because Betruger( the crazy scientist in charge of the operation) wanted to know what was goin on. The teams that went through encountered what could only have been described as demons. They began to collect specimens, and these demons were studied in delta labs. After all sorts of research, it was concluded that this was indeed a portal to Hell. The teleportation technology was also extra-dimensional technology apparently.

The UAC board just happened to have sent in Coucilman Eliot Swann and his personal bodyguard at the same time as you got assigned to Mars. They were there to conduct a full investigation and report on the goings on of Mars Base.

SO, after a couple of minutes into the game, Betruger, in a startling and surprising move, took the soulcube and went through the portal to Hell. This compromised the integrity of the portal, and released hell's fury onto the base. Betruger was apparently there for a while, and when he came back, he didn't have the soulcube. He was basically working for the forces of hell. By bringing the soulcube into hell, he thought that the only weapon that could defeat them would be safely guarded in hell, thereby allowing for hell's army to take over the world. Little does he know that YOU are fighting for the side of humanity!

So, after the initial invasion, it was your duty to send a communication to the Fleet so they could come in and save the day. This is just what Betruger wants, though, cause his plan all along was to take the ships and pack them full of hellspawn, go to earth, and wreak havoc.

So, after a lot of fighting, you end up in hell, retrieve the soulcube, go back to Mars Base, fight some more, then go down to the ancient civilization digsite, fight some more, and end up at the Hell Portal, which the forces of hell are spewing out of. They no longer need to come in through the teleporters, cause when Betruger messed up the integrity or whatever, this gave way for the hell portal to open up. So, you have to destroy the hell portal. BUT, in order to do that, you have to fight the ultimate baddie: The Cyberdemon! This collosal badass is tough, and wicked enormous. So you run around, and the only way to kill him is with the soulcube. So, you end up killing him, and then the soulcube flies around, goes down the portal, lot of explosion type situations occur, and then the portal seals up. It then cuts to you being rescued by some soldiers from the fleet. You win! Yay!

Ending scene: Cut to hell, you see Betrugers head, pan out, his head is like on a stalk or something, coming out of the mouth of a demon dragon thing. The head goes back into the mouth. This is Betruger's new form: Demon Dragon Thing. He wasn't being eaten by the dragon, he is the dragon! Oh no! He's in hell of course. He then flies away, presumably to plot for the invasion of Earth or something in Doom 4.

THE END.

What is this "hell vision" in the bathroom mirrors?

In a thread on another forum someone wrote "DON'T LOOK IN THE MIRROR!!!!". It didn't seem to have any relevance to any of the posts before it, so I thought it was just some in-joke about the games graphical capabilities, like they didn't code in reflective surfaces or something. So playing along I come across a bathroom, and after making sure it's clear I walk over to the mirror, wanting to see if I saw a reflection or not. A split second later I yell out "oh fuck!" and after blasting an imp that appeared I had to pause it for 15-20 minutes just to calm down.

If you end up playing the game it might end up being a little anti-climatic after reading all this hype, but man it sure got me good.

Edit: To add to KOC's description - if you keep focused on the mirror while the "vision" is going on you see your characters face start to wither and turn evil and zombie-like.

That sounds rather innovative, and rather freaky by the sound of it.

Well, thanks for answering my questions. Good summary King of Creation, and thanks for expanding on the previous answers about the mirrors Montez.
