downloading stuff I own?

in the first instance, yes it is ok to DL a copy of thriller in MP3 etc if you have the vinyl, if you havd the equipment you can rip it yourself and then only use the digital copy..

secondly, as already said I can rip the cd contents to my HDD for use and to preserve the original, I actually have the right in law to do that, it's very specific..

I'm just a lazy ass who wants to skip the ripping step and DL one that someone already ripped for me..

in that same manner you can transfer your VHS charlie chaplin to DVD for your convenience as long as you retain the original.

My question regarding the F3 is not at all the same as "I own the book, can I download the movie" since the movie is and entirely different production than the book.. where as the whole PC / PS3 / Xbox 360 thing is all done on PC and then converted, they didn't build the exact same game from the ground up to the exact same spec 3 times.. they built it once and converted it..
so it's more along the lines of "I own the paperback, can I download the e-book to take on holiday?"

It's not like they converted the game to consoles just by pressing a magic button. It takes some effort to port a game to a different system. So your e-book & paperback analogy isn't appropriate.

Sander, did you actually just compare piracy to murder? Wow. Anti-piracy nuts make some weird arguments from time to time, but this sure takes the cake. Once again: if it can't be proven that he downloaded it and he owns an original copy then it's not much different from making your own backup copy, which is legal. It's only a small, technical difference. I can't believe you are arguing against this even though he specifically stated that he already owns a legal copy.

And just for the record I want to add, in case it's not clear, that I'm making a distinction between the Privateer 2 and the Fallout 3 case here. I don't consider them analogous.

Read my previous post, erase all the necessary remarks you just made and then discover you have... an empty post! :)

I'm not dumb so I know that I can transfer the footage from my Chaplin VHS tapes to dvd's. But what you don't seem to get is that it's not okay for me to download BluRay versions or DVD versions of those movies just because I have them on VHS tapes.

Similarly I can trasfer my Thriller vinyl to cassette or cd, but just because I own the album doesn't make it legal for me to go to certain sites and then download from some RS or Mu link.

Laziness isn't a good excuse for piracy.
