RE: Info about the minigun in the movie...

you know, the starting topic were ended after one reply.
But this discussion on fallout guns is exciting

---------------

Can you feel it captain compost?
Can you feel it?

Miniguns are small as compared to other guns. And they'r MUCH TOO BIG for anyone to carry except maybe the Terminator. They were used on navy(?) airships in the 20s and 30s. Does anyone remember the old Shoot'em up called Wolfenstein 3D? That was (if I remember corectly) the first game where the hero used a minigun. The only problem was that in real life it weighed 270 kilo (562 punds) without ammo and required two 24 volt batteries to operate and was mainly used to battle tank when mounted on a helicopter. That always makes me smile.

I think Germany has a complete no-Nazi policy, even when it comes to killing Nazis. Germany, unlike Japan, has really owned up to its attrocities in the war.

idSoftware has released the source code to Wolf3D. You can also download it off of abandonware sites. I've still got it on disk and I have the map editor too. I used to have the sprite editor, but I don't think I have it anymore.

*That* is your proof? A photograph? Take a look at that picture, do you know how difficult-to-impossible it would be to hold and fire that thing when the firing trigger is located on the top of the rear handle? Your front arm would have to extend about three feet forward and your back arm would be swung really far back.

Sure, maybe you could *carry* that thing around, but firing it, yeah right.

Look at this page where you can BUY one of those things: http://www.student.brad.ac.uk/jpbones/Computer.html

The thing can use over 5000 rounds of ammo and the equipment list includes a TRIPOD.

*Here* is a "handheld" minigun, but don't go thinking you can take down any armies with THAT thing: http://www.thegateway.net/gyroman/

Firing the minigun while holding it would not be impossible. I'm going to talk about physics for a while here, and this is an abstract part of it. When the minigun fires, the barrel is rotating. This barrel has its own rotational velocity (omega).
Now, when the bullets start firing out of the barrels it exerts a torque on the gun, wich tries to apply another rotational force on the minigun giving it a resultant rotational velocity. This would be a sideways rotation from a bird's eye view. With this in mind, it would be more than possible to fire a personal minigun.

here is the force from the firing of the bullets.
(side view)
___ |
| |======|======<--- (Force due to bullets)
| |------+----- (center o gravity (+))
|___|======|====== (barrel)
|
Now, it is NOT being applied to the center of gravity, it is slightly higher, producing a torque.

Since the barrel is already spinning:

(front view)
<--
o o
o + o (its damn hard to draw this using text)
o o
-->

You end up with a third, resultant rotational force.
(Top view)
-->

<---

This force would be easily counteracted by someone with a front and rear handle.

If you still disagree with me I could very well draw you a better picture and possibly refer some sources of which would prove this.

Ok, i will just post the damn picture sometime, I cant draw in ascii worth shit.

Torque can't possibly affect the recoil of a bullet. The torque of the rotating barrels only affect tilting the barrel off its rotational axis. If simple rotating exerted a force like that we could use rotating discs to levitate with.

You still haven't shown me how a person can possibly fire a minigun when many miniguns weigh 200+kg, that's 400 pounds.

I mean, check out the specs of this very light 30 pound minigun:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Labyrinth/9659/minigun762.html

It generates over 400 pounds of continuous force!

I invite you to find me *any* site that has a personal minigun that is not from a game, a movie, or a bee bee gun. Trust me, I have looked, and they don't exist.
