Evil Avatar: Fallout - an outside perspective

Is this true?? I've never seen this mentioned. This is pulled directly from the Evil Avatar forums:

My friend, however, got a very different game than I did, and I suspect that he probably had more fun. He's the type to screw around with his character creations, and he had his strength pumped all the way up, while significantly sacrificing his intelligence. The effects on his game were extreme: he could barely communicate with anyone, mostly speaking in grunts. The opening movie was different ("You. Go. Klamath. Klamaaaaath."). And when he met truly mentally challenged NPCs, the types of NPCs that would have spoken to my character in grunts, they understood each other completely, with high english. "Good day, m'lord, how goes your afternoon." Hilarious.

I'm going to have to go try that now.. Hahahaha!

How do you mean you've never seen it mentioned? The intelligence 1/2 dialogues are legendary, available in Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Arcanum, to name a few.

The "mentally challenged NPC" is Torr, which is a one-off.

I started playing Fallout by playing the demo. I had no trouble with learning how interface and combat worked too.

my only advice comes in a simple to understand reasoning.

A. Kill anything that moves.
B. Screw any chick who puts out (you know what I mean)
C. Gamble until your heart stops.
D. (The most important) Kill the president and assume he's Bush : )

Mentastical

What?

I played Fallout 2 before playing Fallout, and had trouble playing it because the interface changes irritated me. I got over it after the first sat on my shelf for about a year unplayed, before finally submitting and playing it nonstop for a few weeks.

He should definitely have started with FO; I made the same mistake. Getting a Windows PC (or setting up Windows on his intel mac) isn't that hard, is it?
Anyway, he seems to be on the right track, I just hope he gets to try a few more characters. There's a lot to be explored there.
And as someone said before, the more people get to play the originals, the worse it'll be for Bethsoft's sales (I hope).

I think, it's the other way. The more people get to play the game now the first time, the more people will buy fallout 3 when it will be released.

Maybe so, but they'll be in for a big disappointment if they just buy it without informing themselves.

There will be new fans of F1 and F2 but not close to the number of fans F3 will have.

if a kid today picks up Fallout 1 or 2 and starts playing it, the graphix will disgust him and it will throw away. those who will barely make it through, will be disgusted by the horrific challenging TB combat system. And then comes the long and tediuous dialogue lines and they will have to read all that because it matters what you select there.

todays gaming industry delivers what the consumer wants. dumbed down games for dumb people. GOD forbid to make a game challenging! the consumer will have nightmares!

They won't have nightmares. they'll just head over to Gamefaq's.

Well Bully! to a new Fallout fan, even if premature. Any luck it may induce a sort of mystic understanding of why we generally don't like what were seeing with Fallout 3.

Least he's giving it a shot. Thats more then alot of people do.

No doubt FO3 will sell, but my point was that the few who decide to play the originals now, and actually like the gameplay as it is, should avoid FO3 like the plague. From what we've seen, there's very little of what made the originals such great RPGs in FO3.

An aside: of course it would be arrogant of us to just say "instead of targeting the xbox kiddies, target us, the real FO fans"; there's much more money to be made with the hordes of zombies... However, considering that FO and FO2 still sell (even disregarding the obvious craze that the recent news must have stirred) and that in 10 or so years FO3 will be forgotten, can the people at Beth really take pride in making FO3 the way it's being done?

i also pity people that first play Fallout 2 only to then try Fallout 1. they loose so much... due to FO2, they'll expect a bigger world, have more annoyances with the interface (Correct-change Boy & scrolling amongst other things) and probably wont fully appreciate the gritty and dark feel of the first game, where the second was much more lighthearted.

too bad really. FO1 is the true classic in my heart, not FO2.

Yep, my main gripes with FO (in the early runs) were the interface, the size of the world and also the uselessness of the recruitable NPCs. Also, FO2 gave me some spoilers about the first game.
However, I really enjoyed the thick atmosphere, it was much better than in FO2.
One should always play the games in the right order, but it's not "fatal" IMHO.

I don't think it'll be forgotten... we'll still remember.

You know, the other day, I was at some other forum, and there happened to be a FO poll... and of the four choices, the majority said FO2 was the best one in the series, followed by FOT, then FO1. Only, what, 4 people said POS was the best, IIRC.

It really makes me wonder about the state of today's gamers...

No need to go to another forum

Check out people's Top-10 games here:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=594

While more people have Fallout 1 #1, still, quite a few people here put Fallout 2 ahead of Fallout 1.

And more people put them on equal footing than having one ahead of the other.

Hell, there are a few people in that thread with Fallout 2 in the their Top 10 and Fallout not even making it.

EDIT: Now that I actually look through that thread further, I'm not sure that more people don't have Fallout 2 ahead of Fallout.

According to Tim Hume, it does, but the OS X port removed the talking PIPBoy. Maybe the older versions don't work on OS X?

Excuse me - talking PIPBoy??
Yes, talking PIPBoy. The Mac version used Apple's text-to-speech synthesizer to have the PIPBoy 'say' greetings and the like on certain in-game days (eg. Christmas, Valentine's Day).

We'll remember it as we remember FOPOS. The rest of the world will not remember it at all, I hope. That's what happens to mediocre games.

Ouch. It does say a bit about who is the "average game consumer" these days...

Not really. It's easily explained by the fact that many people liked Fallout 2 because there was a lot, lot more to do there. Fallout was a relatively short game.
The fact that Fallout: Tactics is second is only because people who liked both Fallout 1 and 2 can only vote for one of the two.
