Gamehelper has a big bit of 6-page coverage on Fallout 3:
“So why the f— are we doing Fallout?”, posits Todd Howard to an audience of game journalists gathered at Bethesda’s HQ to hear the answer to just that question. Most gamers familiar with the Fallout series won’t care so much for the ‘why’s’ but rather the ‘how’s’. One glance at the community forums hints at the fervor and froth foaming on the turbulent sea made up of the series’ ardent fans. With almost no information forthcoming on Bethesda’s part the only remaining tools at these fans disposal has been assumption and speculation…until now.

“We had just made Daggerfall (1996) – so we were very into our elves and swords and such”, explains Todd Howard, “and then along comes Fallout. We all start playing and we’re like – have you seen this thing? They’ve got dip switches for violence – all this crazy sh—t. And then Fallout 2 came out the next year. It kinda became this ‘when are they gonna make another Fallout? We loved the series! And then the crack began – ah, we should do it! I was like – yeah, that’d be cool…[…]

Fallout I in particular would become the model – or the ‘tone setting’ – for the team’s approach to Fallout 3, paying particular attention to the key iconic elements of the original game; The interface bar along the bottom, the PIPBoy 2000, (your personal ‘Dick Tracy style’ PDA) the violence – would all be key elements the team wanted to retain.

“Violence – people forget but Fallout was one of those first games where [people said], ‘Hey, look at the violence’….(the journalists chuckle) Hey, Violence is funny – lets all just own up to it! Violence done well is f—ing hilarious. It’s like Itchy and Scratchy or Jackass –now that’s funny! “
Fallout 3 is Jackass funny?
Out is the conversation wheel that made up that hellish little dialogue mini-game in Oblivion and in is an upgraded dialogue system more akin to your Mass Effect. Instead of random luck, your play-style will affect the game’s outcome. Todd sums it up, “With each character I can be a d–k, I can be a good guy – the whole game is how do you want to role-play – what kind of character do you want to be?”

“Be a d—k”, and you might just miss out on some quests – turn a town against you – or end up in hell – hey, all the cool people are there! Leave a town and they will remember you when you return – there’s no karma reset here – and yep – Karma is back too. Oh, did I mention – there are some 12-13 different endings? So you may want to try playing as Mr. Nice Guy too just to ensure you get the whole story.

“War never changes” – but Fallout sure has. We tend to look back through nostalgic rose-colored glasses at the games of ‘yesteryear’ until those rare occasions arise in which we load them up again and discover just how terrible they look alongside the Gears of Wars and Oblivion’s lining our shelves today. And in time even these games will show their age. But time is something Bethesda has on their side - at the moment.
Colourful.

Obviously.

Oh, did I mention - the "Beth, old hag MOD" has one map, one NPC and one dialogue only - yet 3 different endings! :aiee:

Hi guys, my first post here.
Been following the forum without posting for quite some time, I just couldnt take this final blunder and had to register and share my disgust with you.
This guy Todd's head must be really messed up or something, he is so gleefully talking total bloody CRAP for christ's sake! Is there anything but heads blowing up in stylish over-gory details in this shit-box on his shoulders(I know, rhetorical Q). This has not only COMPLETELY missed the point of fallout-ness, he is making up things and is head over heels in his own self-righteousness!!! Damn, trying so hard to keep positive, but after a mag in blisfull glee straight-out said the combat is FPS (fuck this VATS contrivance) and Todd is Bullshitting us at the top of his voice, I can't but write this game off and join the "R.I.P. fallout" brotherhood.
P.S. Get the torches!!!! To Maryland!!!

Didn't another article also use the exact same line "War never changes but fallout sure has" line?

They need to learn that not everyone's a fool that falls for the "shiny-sparkly-next-gen-ness" factor that's so prevalent these days. Rather than load up old games again and discover how bad they are, I tend to load up old games, 'notice' how much the graphics have changed, YET that the game play of the older games STILL beat that of the newer games... tells you a lot about the development priorities of game studios these days.

No, they know this, but they just don't care.
Because the majority of the market DOES fall for this shit. In todays consumerism bussiness doesn.d produce quality, it produces what will be bought, big time. Dumbing down games ? Check! Over the top ridiculous violence? Check! Less and less thought provoking content? Check! More and more content making kids go "WOW!" ? Check! Fuck, this world is going to hell!

You said it. Fallout 1 and 2 have "flava" that few games have matched even to this day, and it has nothing to do with how pretty it does or does not look.

I happen to think they're gorgeous myself  )

Stopped reading there.

FO3 dialogue

I think the best would be
"What the f-- have we -- the FirstPerson-ilizing, blatant action-rpg-ish-game-producing, ultra-violence-loving,toilet-water-drinking,tottaly-unable-to-grasp-the-essence-of-a-good-game-let-alone-produce-one , mob -- TO DO WITH FALLOUT ?!?! " - with punctuation in the end mandatory!

Oh, that's golden. Absolutely fucking golden.

My little brother's friend brought over an Xbox360 the other day and left it here. I think I'm going to go throw it out the window.

EDIT: Through = throw?

Exactly, which is why I said I would notice how the graphics have 'changed' and not necessarily 'improved'. I loved the fallout look, its graphic style. Though I wouldn't mind if the resolution was increased and there was widescreen support... :P

He is being his true mind-fucked self. Behold, ye, unbeleievers, the majesty of His Dumbfucked-ness Todd, hte man thinking uber-violence is the thing outlining fallout, and what is even better - the man thinking THIS IS IT and is truly bringign to you this formula the way it was meant to be! I kid you not!

jeez, so violence sells ? no kidding dips..t

I swear people are becoming more and more graphics who..s , i remember back in my days eye of the beholder series (bad graphics) but what drew me in was the new thinking in games, forget graphics if you dont have a involving story-innovative design (well last 10 years been repeat over and over)

and this todd guy seriously derranged , sounds like he is 10 years old and thinking swearing it the coolest thing he discoverd , reading all these new previews-reviews is just making me mad they repeating the same boring stuff we already heard and betsheda lying over and over they keeping it to the spirit of fallout 1-2

sigh back to real life at least one know what to expect there

Goddammit.

Now, I love Jackass. I lose sleep staying up to watch Jackass on MTV2, but I do not want Jackass near Fallout. It's not even comparable humor.

I wish he would stop making these comments. Toddles, you have shown time and again you didn't love the series. Otherwise you wouldn't have changed so much. Oh, yeah, i forgot. You "got it", didn't you Toddy ?

I second that. I would like to see a Fallout-like game with *improved* Fallout style graphics.
