GameSpy brings us a preview from the play-through at PAX:
I figured it had to lead somewhere, but I was shocked (shocked!) to find that there were quite a few creepy and incredibly hostile people hanging out on the remains of the overpass.

So attacked, I had to defend myself. Making superb use of a combination of the V.A.T.S. system and straight-up shooter skills (when I was all out of AP, the currency of V.A.T.S.), I dropped something like twelve half-naked humanoids. They offered no explanation for their brutal assault, but I don't really ask questions when somebody is running at me with a machete. For my troubles I got to the middle of the overpass with a beat-up sniper rifle and an awesome but fuel-hungry flamethrower.
(...)
Spying what looked like a ghost town on the horizon, I made my way in its direction to see if there was anything worth salvaging. As I stepped into what would have been the city's limits if there had been any residents left, I noticed that I'd gotten a couple of experience points for discovering "Minefield." Certainly that was just the name of this ghost town, right?

Beep. Beep. Beepbeepbeep.

BOOM!

Ouch... no, that's not just a name. Some damned fool had mined the town, and I soon met the damned fool himself. Or rather, fire from his sniper rifle met my delicate, Vault-fresh flesh. He was a very old man perched atop what was left of a three-story building, taking pot shots at me as I hit the healing stimpacks hard, juicing myself back into wellness.

Sounds exciting. Guess Bethesda listened to the common 'combat was boring in Fallout 1/2' from players of the old game. I hope the game isn't too combat heavy, though.

dude i hope thats sarcasm...i really hope thats sarcasm??
boring fights in fallout 1/2???
come on dude...

That all sounded fairly good.
Has anybody else noticed that vault 101 is pretty much just outside washington DC? there's just a couple miles seperating them, the main flesh of the landscape is behind the vault.

At the beginning of the game you could say that combat was boring, when fights were often like:

You miss.
You miss.
You miss again.
Thou shall miss.

Erm if anything, combat was the most boring/slow/tedious thing in FO1/2.

Yup, hence why I don't care about dropping TB. I still consider original Fallouts are the best games ever though.

Some people thought FO's combat was great, personally I would never have played the games a single second further if I found the combat to be drab. It's my personal opinion that an RPG can't be good unless it has decent combat.

EDIT: Fuck you story snobs, stop killing my favorite genre.

Eschewing the prescribed gameplay path of visiting Megaton (that admittedly is not actually prescribed except for the winding path leading from the Vault door to the city)...

Did I misunderstand this, or is there really a trail of some sort leading straight from the vault to Megaton? I hope not, 'cause that would be really silly :?

I actually liked what he said, i just hope its as good as he's describing it. Damm fool, spots a minefield and thinks its the name of a town. He probably has a low intelligence in real life. One thing that doesn't sound real is that if he stepped on a mine he should be dead or lost a limb, or at least have it crippled to the point were he would need more than stimpacks to heal itself. Not a true fallout game but a good post-apochalyptic fist person shooter.

The combat was usually only tedious if you were fighting 30+ enemies (make sure you set your alarm clock for when it gets to your turn..) or if you decide to go on one caravan run after another. Decent pay but you REALLY did not want to do that unless you just needed to get to the town they were going to and the pay and exp for the fights are just a little reward while you get there.

When you're fighting a group of 3 to 8 people though, the TB system really pays off.

Another tedious example I can think of is when you're having to fight 1 on 1 rat fights. There should have been larger groups of rats so you could make better use of grenades. Well there was the random swarm encounters in the cities, but under Necropolis... tedious until you run into a molerat. The tougher enemies always make you appreciate the TB system more. It makes the fights seem a little more epic and worthwhile.

Perhaps he thought it was a town with a gold mine and therefore named "Minefield"... like Springfield..

....

Well I hope we can dig up those mines and re-use them. :D

You just need to get to a good hiding place, wait 1 min, and then snipe the unsuspecting sniper. After that you should be able to clear the mines and sell them in nearest town (or use them, they make a good mess). But if you don't have a good enough trap skill you may end up all over the minefield.

Hopefully this sniper mechanic will actually be interesting, and not shitty and canned like in Half-Life 2.

Sniper mechanics in most games are pretty awful, generally. You usually switch from a broad view where you can move your targeting thing-a-mabob around quickly, to a tiny circular view where the targeting thing moves soooooooooooooooooo sssssssllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwwlllllyyyyy.... Never been much a fan of sniper rifles in FPSes.
