Fallout 3 interview on Eurogamer

I kinda feel like people who demand VO are either lazy or can't read very well. In which case, you probably shouldn't be playing RPGs.
I second that. Also I find listening to VO while I can read the text in one second or two a waste of time.
Same here.

I noticed how so many of the Fallout 3 previews keep harping on the star-studded VO cast, though. Does anyone really care? Yippee, so they got Liam Neeson, an actor whose work I like, to do the voice of your father. There are hundreds of other voice actors with more experience in games/animation/etc. who could've done just as good a job.

Every aspect of this game is being given way more hype than it deserves.

Bethesda is trying to repeat the Patrick Stewart hype they created for Oblivion. Pretty pointless, since nobody is falling for it again. It's pretty sad that Emil has to go "it's Liam Neeson, man!" in an interview.

I know...it just shows a difference in confidence in the game their making. I guess they feel they need that star power to boost their game's profile.

Look at Rockstar games, who tends to have big named actors and voice actors in their GTA games, but never even releases that info until the game comes out, because they know they don't really need that hype, their game speaks for itself.

: You can't. You can't proceed feeling that way. It's like, you also can't proceed feeling like you owe the fans of Fallout anything, you can't feel bad that you're not making a turn-based isometric game. When I first started I think did feel like that, and there was a period of coming to terms with it, and just saying, "I'm going to make the best game I can make, it is what it is, and we have the skills to make an excellent game, so that's what we're going to do."

...even if it goes against the game's essential design. Boldly said

Why the fell blow 5 mil on an intellectual property, if you're going to tear it apart, because that's the only thing you feel prepared to do? I've no idea.

He's Liam Neeson! Who wouldn't want Liam Neeson as their dad, right?

It's a joke, right? Or is your target consumer suffering from fmily problems?

I'm fine with the Father I have, thank you.

I kind of like their approach to morality and the "fatherquest", but their disposition towards the original franchise and the fans that kept it *alive* is outrageous. Was this what you've maintaned an active and devoted community for nearly ten years for?

Also, for some reason it has a concept art of Intoxicate Interactive's Afterfall on page 2.

Wasn't it in advertisement space? I can't find it.

So Liam Neeson is the dad! and he will bug you for all of the game no matter what you do .

Hey.at least he won't phone you on the cellphone in most action-packed moments.

Unless he gets to the Galaxy News Station. That would suck.

I'd say no, we probably couldn't care less, if the VO was good enough in the first place.

I don't recall the FO1 adds very well, but do you guys recall anyone jumping up and down screaming girlishly "It's got MacGuyver in it!"

Now that I think of it, I remember the FO2 adds even mocked the idea of having a star studded VO cast by doing that bit about gilbert godfrey as the voice of the chosen one..

this is yet another example of Bethesda's complete disregard for the important points of the series, in favor of the two or three bits and doodads that weren't integral to the setting but looked/sounded cool to the toddmeister.

I can see it now:

todd: "oooh oooh they had famous actors in fallout. that must have been why people bought it!"

beth developers: "we live to serve you master.."

todd: "I just had a great idea! lets make all the dialogue in the game voice acted and hire a bunch of stars so we can severely overinflate the budget on this shit game were making"

beth developers: "yes master... we will bring you stars.. yes.."

todd: "worthless fesants! why are you still here!?! go bring me the VO talent to make up for the failings of FINO3! I mean Oblivout... erg.. Fuckedup 3!.. dammit.. you know what I mean! get out of my sight!"

WD, they followed the same pattern with Oblivion and Patrick Stewart. It seems to be part of Bethesda's current design philosophy.

It was even sadder when he said "Who wouldn't want Liam Neeson as their father??".
Um.. me? I have my own dad, thanks. I like Liam Neeson, but no I haven't fantasiesed about him being my dad.

Pretty sad that Bethesda doesn't seem to think that their games can stand on their own without hyping the voice-over cast to hell and back. I'd be fine with them casually mentioning it, but jeez, enough already.

Every preview/interview I read is either A) hyping the wrong things as if to say "This right here is what Fallout is about!", then failing spectacularly in that regard; or B) spinning or defending stuff that sounds downright stupid, e.g. the combat system.

I was thinking: when Nintendo debuted the Wii, they simply invited people to try it out. They said, here's a Wii-mote, try out Wii Sports. You'll see, it's fun. Compare that with the all-out marketing assault by Bethesda. Night and day.

A truer show of opposites would be hard to find. I only wish more gaming developers would be this confident in what they're making.
