Fallout 3 & SecuROM

So turns out Bethesda's statement about Fallout 3 & DRM was somewhat less than accurate, ReclaimYourGame running the following story:
Earlier this month, Bethesda Softworks promised us that Fallout 3 would have no invasive DRM scheme, and that they would go for the 'mildest form possible'. These are nothing but broken promises! In fact, Fallout 3 is shipping with SecuROM 7! Someone already got bitten by it, with a known SecuROM error: Conflict with Emulation Software detected. Now, we all know what that means! Non-invasive DRM? Of course not, Bethesda. We had hope, only for it to be a let-down. Also, Fallout 3 comes with SecuROM 7.36.0006. In short, Bethesda has betrayed us!

Other links worth a peruse:
How Bethesda treat people with SecuROM problems — it's outrageous. Bethesda don't know anything about the DRM they use.
Bethesda's quick fix for people with problems.
SecuROM has released a patch for people who run into problems.

Spotted on Blue's News.

ReclaimYourGame seems like an excitable bunch...

I also wonder about the legality of selling software that refuses to run if you have other, perfectly legal software on your HD without saying so on the box.

Yes, rather excitable, aren't they?

I mean, I'm no fan of SecuROM but at least Bethesda is bucking the trend on things like limited installs. I'm not sure I'd describe the situation as "outrageous"

I would if I was one of the people for whom the game wouldn't install due to SecuRom. Especially since BS said they would not be using SecuRom.

Very interesting that Beth would claim one thing and do another.

I remember something... something about retaining the dark humor and irony of some sort of series... then reading certain reviews of said product and seeing that much of that had been left out.

Huh. The name of the product eludes me.

Well, only people who bought the game are actually bothered by this DRM crap, so FEAR NOT brave soldiers of the world!

Unless I am completely unaware of thousands of pirates who live without knowledge and/or access to the internet, all of this SecuRom crap (and most DRM) has got to be the biggest waste of time ever. I pre-ordered my game (shipping in progress) for the PS3, but adventures through the levels of hell they call the internet, has shown me it takes less than a DAY for pirates to figure out how to hack these systems. It doesn't matter what it is. Either these companies are just stupid or there really is a conspiracy behind this trash. Am I just missing something?

Since many of you are probably a lot more knowledgable in this stuff than me, you've probably already seen like what's on Amazon.com:

Far Cry 2
For PS3: 4 Stars
For 360: 5 Stars
For PC: 2 Stars because of the DRM.

Same with Dead Space and a couple of others. I couldn't believe the response to Spore's DRM...like...3,000 1 star marks. Yeah, keep going you smart companies. Saving lots of money with your crappy DRM. (takes deep breath)

I am glad Beth didn't do the limited install thing though. I just found out about that stuff; ridiculous. I'd really like to know the actual cost of finishing a game only to attach a pound of sh*tty spy software onto it.

This type of SecuRom is not a big deal, so I wouldn't go around all pissed and calling Bethesda liars.
For those who can't install and/or play the game because of it, I disagree. Yes, it doesn't use all of the nasty features that come with SecuROM but it's presence is an issue in and of itself.

Getting your logic twisted up there: yes, this SecuROM is not a big deal. No, that does not mean Bethesda didn't lie about it. They did.

this made me really angry. I used a cracked .exe to fix the problem....now i know why i pirate....but i felt like i owed something to Bethesda for not being asses...i was wrong...

While this version of SecuROM is not a "big deal", i believe it can still fail to start up F3 or install properly if you have certain pieces of software running on your system (like device emulators and the like)

my initial plans were never to buy this game in the first place, but to obtain it "somehow."

but now, aside from the negative reviews (personal reviews) from plenty o' people i trust...i feel this may be the last straw which has me sending the package back to best buy and saving myself some money and the hassle from a game i'm destined to hate in my own very special way, anyhow.

fuck you bethesda. seriously. fuck you to fucking hell.

Well at least there isn't this online registry bullshit or limited installs.

If it's just secuROM on it's own, then I'll just have to remove it off my system and get a no CD crack.

Tsk tsk Bethesda, though they did use secuROM on oblivion but I don't think that version was as intrusive.

Not the first to point it out but just want to bring up some points:

1) Do Bethesda and other companies realize that DRM actually promotes piracy, as in pirates don't even have to leave the house, can download it with the DRM already stripped and are good to go. Where as honest, paying customers have to deal with the hassle of the DRM conflicting with software on their system, are told they need to uninstall/delete/rename/etc other software on their PC because the DRM thinks they're filthy pirates.

2) What will it take for the industry to realize that people are willing to pay for games and actually own them, not have to 'phone home' to authenticate as an example.

HAHAHAHA, oh man, I just looked at the Bethesda forums and some guy posted this.

I accidentally left my DVD at work (I needed to take images of the packaging so bethesda would send me a new GFW-Live key), then I went to play FO3 at home, and it complained about no-dvd. SOOOOO I went to the program files, and ran Fallout3.exe and it worked.

Looks like SecuROM is only attached to the launcher. How silly of them .

Yeah, you can't change the options easily, but good thing I own the game and can put the dvd in to change the options.

I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this.

Doesn't entirely surprise me. I mean why half ass making a game when you can also half ass the DRM protection?

I wonder if the devs knew this (the launcher vs. actual game program), but marketing needed "security"

just a supposition
