Fallout 3 The Pitt Reviews

I'd say most sites use a 1-7 scale only for European games. And it's sometimes hilarious to see the reviews trying way too hard to find flaws in an otherwise great game.

For example, read The Path review Brother None posted - most categories are like "I don't know how to rate this, so I'll give it a low score".

As another example, Outcry got a 4/10 on Gamespot, even though it is a unique, brilliant classic point-and-click adventure games, and definitely the best in the genre in 2008. It got 3 points off because it made you think. Another three because it's not made in USA. IGN gave it a "near-perfect" 6.8, and the scores for the graphics, presentation, and sound were below 8, even though they were highly complimented in the "review".

I do agree that European games dont get to play on an even playfield. It is a shame too because people in europe are the best at making those "only on a computer" games involving statistics, strategy, story and nuance.

When it comes to movies (my other passion) you will find that foreign films do well with critics but check out the rating these movies get... a G rated movie that is foreign automatically gets pg and a movie almost no sex, very little swearing and no violence will often get an R. Think Spirited Away (PG) and Amelie (R). That is because the people who rate movies are mostly morons (watch This Film is Not Yet Rated sometime) and the people who review games are increasingly from a console only background. It is going to be weird when the next generation of game writers grows up having played mostly Wii and i-phone games. "This game sucks, it has text!".

Btw: Can anyone explain what makes a game T, M or AO?
Is Blood and Gore=M, 1 nude tit=M and anything other than Holywood kiss is AO?

Holywood Kiss: Aragorn removing Arven's tonsil's

Yeah, that drives me crazy. I personally think that games are an amazing place for storytelling but the stories we can tell are incredibly limited due to what people are allowed to do. So yeah, it would be impossible to have a game where two characters talk about sex while drinking beers but there is no problem with brutalizing giant breasted women in skimpy outfits (see every fighting game to date).

The ratings system is based a 1D6 roll. But really there is no formula. The exact game will get multiply different ratings if submitted multiply times. An Australian example of this is the original Command and conquer. It started of as G(for any age group), then went to PG(recommended for teens and above) and finally settled on M(15+).

Ratings and reviews are seperate issues. The ESRB is pretty good except when there's overwhelming political pressure while the MPAA is just plain god awful. The MPAA ratings are bad because the MPAA ratings board is made up entirely of conservative fundamentalist Christians ("This Movie is Not Yet Rated" is extremely good and informative).

Now I don't agree with the ESRB considering sex and nudity worse than violence but many American's do, which is why the system is good (it rates according to popular morality and thus is relevant, it also includes the reasons for the rating on the back by the rating).

Language, how graphic the violence and gore is, sexualized characters or sexual comments, and nudity. If a game has medium-high resolution nudity then it is all but assured a AO rating, lower res stuff (like in top down games) will generally garner at least a T if not a M. Sometimes "brief nudity" is allowed in M games. Small amounts of blood and not excessive amounts of cartoonish blood are T but large amounts of blood and gore (giblets or what have you) will garner a M. Extremely excessive or brutal violence and gore can merit a AO. Non graphic sex scenes warrant a M while simply implied sex can get away with a T. Tobacco and/or alcohol warrant a T, not sure about use of "hard drugs".

I think I'll start a review site, but at the end of the review I'll score the stuff on a made up scale that changes with each review

While game XXX certainly has its flaws, the story really pulls you by the balls and keeps you going right from the start, I lost many nights of sleep trying to figure out how to complete some of the puzzles.

Score: Tangerine / Hippogryph.

if you really want to judge a game and even if its not "perfect" in quality meaning that it has bugs but great gameplay and story the best is to not use any kind of "rating system" I dont like this that game has 95%! score things or 9/10! point systems. Just try as unbiased as possible to say what was "good" about the game and what was "bad" with your personal oppinion eventualy in the end.
