Fallout 3 to be censored in Germany

The European version of Fallout were always a tad censored - in F2, for instance, all the kids were cut out. I seem to remember that this made you unable to finish a certain quest in Vault City, too.

't Is a shame, though, since in Belgium unlimited sex, drugs and violence are allowed.

Don't forget - while they cut out the images of children, they were still there; enabling you to get the 'Childkiller' trait without even realizing it. Thank you, censors. I would've hated being offended by something.

The thing with the censored Fallout 1 and 2 is... I checked it all for a while and it seems like the US and UK version are not on the index or even 18+ rated. This means, it is only censored because it is in german language. It still was possible to buy the uncensored version without any problems. You even don't needed to import it (if your trader of choice has it in stock).
So it was totaly stupid.

Foreign versions are not officially distributed in Germany. Hence, they are not rated, hence 18+ by default. This also applies for DVDs.

Most sellers won't import games. And if they do, selling it to minors is punishable.

Every seller I know here sells imported games and selling 18+ rated games to minors is also punishable. So this is no argument. ;)

I wonder how many days will pass until someone makes a patch that adds the removed blood and gore back.

Well it took about a week for a de-censorship patch for The Witcher to come out and that didn't even have a fanbase dedicated to previous games so I guess about half an hour.

Sorry a bit off topic, but uhm, german Witcher is censored? How actually, i got a copy and couldn't see any censorship, heads still flying off and so on. Did they remove the blood fountains or something?

Where do you live? Berlin? ;) I guess you have to know where to get them. For me it's easier to import via ebay UK or US. PayPal is a bliss.
Imported games are 18+. So this is no argument.

No. The US version is. They cut out the naked chicks. Seeing nekkid boobies is more harmful to Americans than hacking off limbs. It actually makes sense, you can still live without an arm, boobs will blind you for the rest of your life. See?

Not all of European versions. Polish versions are never censored.

hmm.. boobs.

hell, even stalker came out at 18+ rating, and i cant really think of why. there is no exaggerated detail in violence - blowing up guys with rpgs doesnt do anything but let them fly around a bit. the only bloody thing ive seen so far are the whirlygig anomalies. so, fo3 being censored and 18+ was going to happen, its not really newsworthy. ill make a post when they cut it down to 16+, now THAT would be oresum!

Most games that let you shoot at things-that-resemble-humans get rated "Keine Jugendfreigabe" (basically 18+). Remember Soldier of Fortune 2? They gave all enemies metallic skin (including a weldseam across the face) and relocated the plot to a parallel universe where all people are replaced by robots. It got 18+ anyway.
So, given the apparent emphasis on action, a 16+ rating is rather unlikely.

thx bux, i totally forgot about the "shooting at humans" part. i guess i surf too much in the anglophonic part of the web, so i forget essential deutsche things like that. and, being older than 18, those ratings lose a bit of their crucialness ><. ill keep that in mind. and yes, a 16+ rating is extremely unlikely, hence newsworthy if happening.

damn now i recall the horror halflife 1 was after it got toned down for us germans. argh.

And so (like always with the censored versions) everyone that can will order the US version online/ buy that one in the stores that sell them.

In turn adding to the cycle of Dev's saying " what, Germany? Where is that? Naw that is no market, US sales only are what drives the bussiness"

Ah well not much of a loss, even for those that want to buy it.

Localized versions tend to make me cringe on reading the translated dialogs anyway, even if there is no censorship at all.

The Polish edition will be uncensored, and the translation (partly mine :)) will be optional - you'll be able to play either the original, the original voices with translated text or full localization.

StarCraft (anyone remember the exploding bloody messes the Space Marines were? I think the Medics in BroodWar were even worse) was rated 12+, I think.

Because of the educational values inherent in RTS; or the cartoonish violence. I'm not sure.

My copy of Starcraft says 16+, I had some trouble getting it when I was 14 :P
(which was a long long time ago.)

It's strange, indeed. I don't know of any other game with a USK rating lower than the PEGI rating.
Command & Conquer was "indexed" (the censored German version sported Cyborgs and oil instead of blood) and Starcraft is 12+.
