Fallout 3: Van Buren (Spoilers!)

Hey bros, hexer here!
Thanks for your interest and support, you make this place feel like home :)

Yes, it is true that I have left the project but only to make money and return back with it.
My job in Egypt proved to be too much work and too little in return. I worked my ass off for something that sounded smart but let's face it - we want to have fun and that's all that matters. Anything boring is bound to fail over time. But fun? Never! I've learned my lesson not to pursue boring things anymore.

And I've been promoted in the bank so my pay's good right now. No need to work 3 jobs anymore.

What I'm doing right now is developing my own 2.5D RPG in Unity.
And as far as things are progressing, we will continue developing Van Buren in Unity as well.
As I will be developing my own RPG in Unity, so I will be preparing the terrain for Van Buren.
I've already started writing a FOnline --> Unity map convertor.

No offense, but to be honest seeing "we'll be developing the mod in yet another new engine" only gives me a feeling that the mod would never get finished.
Guess I got the trauma(?) from the old time when bunch of Half-Life WIP mods said they are going to move from Goldsrc to Source engine, but most of them are dead after that.

I learned about your project in that interview you made with RetrospectiveGaming. Good see back on the project and sorted your personal life. I remember you saying that you had to write your own content to fill some of the gaps in the design document. Did some of the content from Fallout: New Vegas help fill in some of the gaps? I know both games are incompatible canonically but New Vegas seems like a Fallout alternate timeline.

NovaRain, yes, I understand your concerns.
You think I have a release date for my VB + Unity love story? Nope, none at all right now.
This year I am 100% focused on working on my commercial RPG.
What I can do, is prepare the terrain for moving Van Buren into Unity.

I would rather spend 6 months moving our maps and code into Unity than continue with FOnline at this point. I simply don't want to touch FOnline ever again.
I will limit myself too much and I need freedom to make what we planned for.
For me, the main problems with FOnline are the fact it's being developed by a single Belarus programmer (Cvet),
90% of documentation is in Russian, some of its tools (dialog and object editors) are very buggy and unstable...
I can't even make the latest version run on my notebook!
I'm tired of that crap, life's too short to fix broken games bro.

Let's move on to something better, Unity 5 in this case.
We can always do better, never forget that.

Fonline's just Fallout 2 + multiplayer.
And if you want that then it's perfect.
But we want more!
There's absolutely nothing in it Unity 5 can't do better.
Unity has many 2D tools and effects I can only dream about in Fonline.

Here are some demos

Dynamic shadow and light

Physics!

3D ragdoll on a 2D sprite

Bullets / laser beams that glow in the dark

Light and atmospheric effects

Yes, there is overlapping with New Vegas' timeline.
We managed to sort overlapping except in 3 cases.
Our writers are trying to make Van Buren and New Vegas coexist in the same timeline.
If they succeed that will be epic, but if they don't we'll diverge into an alternate timeline.

Unity seems to be pretty universal tool. The bad thing is that I don't own NASA-grade computer, so any Unity based game is lost on me now.

That video doesn't work.

This one should work. The effect is at 21:38

Let me guess:
  1. Tibbets Prison vs Big MT
  2. Boulder City
  3. Alexandra

No, those aren't any problem.
Van Buren versions of those are pretty different from their New Vegas versions.
The biggest issue was around the timeline and some canon events from New Vegas.
We still haven't decided should we move the starting year of the game or not because of Hoover Dam, NCR and some other cases .

Wonderful, good luck with the project OP. It's nice to see that you're still working on it. You could always look towards the Fallout community in general for resources (Reddit, NMA). There are some talented individuals out there who could definitely lower the workload.

Hi everybody, I decided to continue the development of Van Buren under a new name - Fallout: Yesterday!
I'll started a new thread here so check it out if you're a Fallout 1/2 or a Van Buren fan.
