Fallout 3 - what studio (split from "Fallout 3 is dead)

First time out of the vault
And just recently, Caen said in the Telephone Conference that Fallout 3 will be developed by an external studio.

Happy days ;)

Yes. I'm glad that the game has a chance of being developed by people who have no knowledge of what it's about.

Oh joyous times.

It all depends on what studio they hand it to. You can't tell me Troika or Obsidian would have no clue what the FO world is about, could you?

However, there are plenty of other studios that could do an excellent job of completely fucking this up.

No, but then again, i wasn't thinking of them when i made the above comment.

Exactly.

Wait...that made no sense. Don't Obsidian and Troika both have people who've worked on the original Fallouts, much like the BIS team working on it, which had about 2 people worjing on it who'd worked on the older games.

I'd like to see Troika develop FO3 from scratch. Troika is and will remain my first choice. But Obsidian would be okay too, I suppose, seeing they have some ex-BIS employees in their ranks.

Bioware?

Nope.

Why does everyone hate bioware so much? I think they've made some really good games, like KOTOR and the Baldurs Gate series.
I just want Fallout 3 to be made by a very good gaming company, staffed by very creative, talented, and skilled employees. Companies like Bioware, Troika, and Obsidian are companies that I think would be good. Companies like Silver Style I think would be horrible. The Fall just doesn't spark my interest.

Bioware has a mainstream take on gaming. Needless to say, this makes it so they have overly restrictive design tendencies in games. While no doubt it works for their games, i doubt very much it would work for Fallout. Fallout did not rank high amoing our collective gaming tastes because it was a mainstream title, did it?

To extrapolate on the Bioware games: They are very good for what they are, which is by-the-numbers RPGs. We don't want that. Bioware games use cliche plots, cliche game design, purely in-the-box stuff, and make the best games you can make using that. So they are fun, but generally speaking they are very black and white/good and evil, not much grey or difficult moral decisions, and I cannot often roleplay what I want- it's often "Be a prancing, moralistic do-gooder" or "TAKE OVER THE WORLD MWAHAHAHAHA". Also, the plot and villains of Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR are just soooooo cliche.

I think what pisses me off more in their games is the amount of assumptions being made for me and my characters, and they include options which they know will not get me anywhere, like being forced to save Suldanessalar in Baldur's Gate 2, or not being able to side with the Drow invasion. If i'm being led into a certain event from which i cannot escape, then don't give me multiple dialogue options implying i have a choice, because i don't.

the best would be troika imho...

and anyway they are officially producing only bloodlines now..
so i think it wouldn t be impossible (also because we know that cain would be very very interested into making a fallout sequel)

From what I understand most of the incomplete FO3 storyline and game design is pretty much done and all laid out. If this is true I think any exceptionally good, experienced game developer that has a good understanding of the Fallout universe and its fans could easily put out a good game. Just as long as they take the time and effort made to do so.

If that isn't true or if the game had to made from scratch I think troika would be the best.

More on BioWare here. Fallout is nowhere near BioWare's design style, and that possibly includes Obsidian as well.

The existing design for FO3 was questionable, given Fallout's technology and there was a space station of sorts planned. Then again, Obsidian also has "New Reno" MCA and "Fleet of Cars" MCA. ;)

If whomever IPlay sells the license to picks up the half-finished Van Buren project, then surely there's a lot less scope for them to fuck it up. That is to say, the engine's in place; most of the plot seems to be thrashed out (for better or worse); the character models are probably finished if what I remember of the mocked-up title screen is right; and so on.

It all depends on what's left to do - if it's just a matter of coming up with a load of amusing side-quests to fill it out, it's not exactly rocket-science, is it?

This actually COULD be a good thing. If design and plot are done then mostly whats left is graphics, mapping, meshes and models, right? I was never impressed with the Van Buren screen shots...I thought the Fallout 2 atmosphere (which almost ALL games lack, and I can think of few exceptions..maybe Diablo I) could only be obtained through there pre-rendered isometric view which could grasp the "dirtiness", griminess, and rusticity that it's predecessors captured so well.

On the other-hand, all the eastereggs and humor that aren't part of the plot wouldn't be done by the original staff either.. and that just breaks my heart!

The problem with the Fallout license is the pricetag, as we have posted Herve tried to sell it but was asking too much and got laughed at..

So let's look at it, Obsidian ? Nope, probably no money. InXile? not sure, Fargo might have... Troika, nope probably don't have the money either...

So that would mean they would have to get someone else to either give them money to buy the license or that some other company buys the license and have for instance Troika develop it..

Funny thing is tho, Fbos have made the Fallout license less worth. Which is what we said from the gecko (sorry can't stop this joke)....

I betcha Chuckie is really damn proud now...

I'm sure at this point, IPLY will cave in on the price.
They need every penny they can get.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some company come in with a lowball bid for the Fallout IP before Inertplay's assets go to the bankruptcy auction block.
