Well I have just finished Fallout 3, and regarding on this, I honestly can't see that this is worthy of the title of GotY or Classic.

The game fails as a RPG, a FPS, and as a Fallout sequel.

Three strikes! You're out Bethesda! Hit the showers.

    More Buzz

    More Buzz

My interaction with FO3 is still primarily through other media, such as these kind and forever provocative opinions offered on the internet.

[To kikomiko a free :) for a delightfully bubbling counter point!]

My interest is not in any speculative or specious horse race, but that a post apocalyptic action RPG was featured.

Any annual award by a commercial conduit is significant buzz for any entertainment corporation,
and some might share in an abstract extrapolated empathy that the fantasy shooter in this instance did not vicariate a single fairy or token elf.

    Buzz by itself isn't new.

    Buzz by itself isn't news.

The news is FO3 is the present gleam in the eye of the editorial handlers of this "Gamespot".

Can't recall why I should, or even could care about this particular "games spot". One of many.

The above quoted Gamespot prose gushes, (they can't seem to turn off the style) and the message is over shadowed by the over reaching hard sell that is too close to irrational exuberance for comfort or credibility.
The editorial may be sincere, but fades in meaning as it takes it's place as text filler in yet another web page on yet another declining day in the bandwidth.
Just more babble in the big buzz. Could just as well be selling hedge funds, SUV's, or the next election's populist prozac.

No, it's not this Gamespot, or any other BIG box style site,

certainly not the Bethesda on the box,

that would sell FO3 to me,

it's the heritage of a legendary IP.

So '<subjectnamehere>' what did you give yourself for Christmas? A *total access* subscription to Gamespot?

Gamespot hardly is or will be the only mainstream site to award GotY to Fallout 3; The game is far from being perfect or even a classic like FO1 but it is without any doubt a good game and a spiritual successor to the series.
Due to a general positive response be it media or the broad playerbase its statistical impossible for Beth. to bribe them all

Anyway, well deserved title, hopefully Fallout 4 will build on it and sort out some of the plain shortcoming this game has

Without a doubt? It's more of a spiritual successor to Oblivion than to Fallout.

I don't think it's a testament to the lack of competition. It's a testament to how a game is judged by how well it's marketed, not how good the game is.

not in my opinion, since i own and did play Oblivion quiet through; other that certain similarities many which are engine based i never had the impression im playing an Elder Scrolls game

just because it doesn't fit in some boxed dogmatic ideas of how should a Fallout game look like that are being fabricated by selfpromoted true fans of the series it doesn't mean it ain't a Fallout game. Beth. isnt Black Isle but thy made their best product yet

But then again its pointless to convince the alredy convinced.

I'd say that a spiritual sucessor is usually a game with similar gameplay mechanics but set in a different setting, not the other way around.

Since Fallout 3 lacks any replayability value, I doubt it will achieve the status of a Classic. Ever. And where in the Hell are my endgame slideshows?! Pete, you lied!

As for those GotY awards, we all know how are they handed over...

It's a good enough game but doesn't qualify as an RPG, just an action game, I'm tired of how the RPG name has been raped to this transparent semen but theres mainstream for you.

when i play Fallout 3 i get the feeling of playing a fallout game, thats the only thing that matters to me as a gamer; the whole iso / turn base argument is irrelevant to me as for most of the people playing the game out there. Its not only the gameplay that makes a Fallout game

And technical since Beth. owns the IP everything is canon what thy say it is

Not really. I can declare that gravity is a lie and even if I'm the grand inquisitor of the world it's still not true.

Also if "gameplay mechanics" only means "perspective" to you, then you have some pretty lousy definitions.

hardly since the law of gravity isn't a property. Fallout Universe is and Beth. can define it and bend its fantasy setting as much thy like and it counts as canon.
Hence Fallout 3 story (meager as it is) is a direct continuation of the original story, as a sequel
Now ofc there are the few diehards who might struggle and not accept this fact but then again who gives , the franchise hardly suffers from it

Then could you please explain why Fallout 3 is canon and Fallout POS is ( widely considered ) non-canon ? What's the main difference between these two titles ?

Retconning is not continuing the series.

They really didnt take hint when Fallout's ending said that BoS became research and development house, and are a lot less powerfull then they used to be.

They pretty much ignored Fallout 2 and its ending. So we have non-existant enclave going to DC.

They ignored the fact that West-tec had the FEV, and no-one else. So we have super mutants.

They ignored that society and humanity was coming back, thanks to VAULTS. So no real settlements. No real trading. No way to use currency.

They even managed to ignore that they made the game take place 200 years after nuclear war. Hence we have scavenging society, scavenging things that shouldnt be there, eating 200 year old food. No farming. Perfectly working UNMAINTAINED generators and computers.

And changing the game to Action-"RPG"*cough* action-adventure*cough*, instead of making it a deep, real RPG, like the previous ones were.
Having no where similar SPECIAL system and making skills somewhat useless, making tag pointless, there by reducing builds.

So yes, it is a sequel. Just a awful, shallow one. A sequel that could be a spin off. Only thing needed would be to change the games name to Fallout:Vault 101 and its spin off. Because it fits every definition of spin-off, except for the name part.
You can keep saying that it is faithfull to the previous games, but it isnt. How can it be ?
And bethesda should atlest to try and respect THE PREVIOUS GAMES if they call it a sequel.

I am waiting for the day that someone buys TES and does the same things to it. Making the TES:X a REAL rpg with ISO view and TB combat, and calling it sequel, while it ignores the endings and events of previous games. Because its THEIR property now, right ?. By your logic, there would be nothing wrong with it. If you dont like TES, then just put any favorite game series to its place.

Yeah, they do own it and can do whatever they wish with it, but how does it make the game less shitty and undeserving of any kind of reward other than "Laziest design EVAR"?

The funniest thing about this is that, if someone made such a game, it would be the only TES game worth a playthrough.
