Boom for event as gamers cast 1.2m votes and name Fallout 3 their ultimate game

1500 HRS October 30th 2009 – The video games industry was recognized as the fastest-growing entertainment medium and the UK was acknowledged as a centre of creative excellence today as the winners of the world’s most popular video game awards show, the 27th annual Golden Joystick Awards were announced in London.

Fallout 3 was crowned “Ultimate Game of the Year”, whilst Call of Duty continued its annual winning streak with a hat-trick of accolades.

With UK consumers spending £2.7billion on gaming over the last year, the industry remains resilient through the current downturn. As games continue to increase in popularity, organisers of the Golden Joystick Awards reported a 47% surge in voting, with over 1.2m votes in another record breaking year.

The popular Call of Duty series from Activision Blizzard once again proved it was a fan favourite, scooping a trio of awards in 2009. Call of Duty: World at War won “Multiplayer Game of the Year” and “Nintendo Game of the Year.” The forthcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 looks set to rule Christmas 2009, bagging the “One to Watch” award.

The haul of awards for Activision Blizzard continued with Guitar Hero: World Tour winning “Soundtrack of the Year”, while the gaming giant rounded-off its haul with “Publisher of the Year”.

There was strong showing for UK-developed titles, as “Family Game of the Year” was taken by Guildford-based Media Molecule for LittleBigPlanet on PlayStation 3 - an innovative platform game voiced by Stephen Fry. “Handheld Game of the Year” was won by Rockstar Leeds' Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for Nintendo DS. The “UK Developer of the Year” category saw Cambridge company Jagex smash all-comers as the makers of Runescape – the biggest free massively multiplayer online role-playing game in the world - outflanked rivals in the category by an overwhelming margin.

Rounding off the afternoon in style, the Golden Joystick Awards themselves were officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the “World’s Most Popular Video Game Awards.” The Golden Joysticks polled 1,223,646 votes in its 27th year.

With every success Bethesda makes, I die a little inside.

I don't give a shit what happens to Fallout now, as long as Interplay takes a chunk out of Bethesda. I'm still waiting on Wasteland 2, at least that's in competent hands.
 
Why do they call the awards for 2008 games the 2009 awards?
And why did it take them 10 months to complete the vote?
 
I would only consider this nomination/award if they openly remarked about all the great mods that people have made

the game vanilla style is pretty terrible
but with some great mods from um... fallout nexus?
the game actually gets pretty good

i still like the first 2 better than 3 with all the best mods though
 
All the mods do is fix imbalances, change some graphics and add things as long as these do not conflict with the DLCs and patches.

They don't fix the storyline, the terrible AI or the fact that most of the setting is a boring sandbox.

The basic game itself is terrible.
You don't know how relieved I was when I found a mod that finally made people shut up when my eyes happened to go over a cup or a discarded tin can while trying to move around.

As much as I like their beer, I'm seriously considering boycotting it due to their "records" division being made up of retarded asshats.

I feel it is sort of the same here, it is all about big numbers, it doesn't say anything about quality.

I would still love Fallout 1 and 2 even if it had not been given any kind of award and really was an obscure RPG.

I like the setting, I like the storylines, I like the gameplay, and I like that the products have a feeling of quality.

This is all lacking in Fallout 3 which is basically slop for the masses who need to be entertained by all means necessary.
Why aim higher and try to get some of the audience to go with it, developing perhaps a taste that sets them apart from the others, when in fact they all need to be like every other gamer.
 
Awww, man! And here I was hoping FO3 would win Bestest Gaem Evar in teh Galaxeee Award. But no... it just won the Ultimate Game of the Year Award. Disappointing to say the least.
 
I can't wait for the "Game of the Day Awards". Then everyone will be a winner and people will finally realize such things amount to squat.
