Fallout 4's weapons lacking variety?

EDIT: Also you're going to use the Rule of Cool against energy weapons but not Fallout 4's whacky guns?

No no no. I'm not against Rule of Cool when used intelligently. But there is the thing where the paddle ball is a Lethal Joke Item. SO is the BB gun/. I've got way more of a problem with the Fat Man, because that's not a lethal joke item, it's a walking war crime, it's stupidly easy to kill yourself with it, and just about any multiloading grenade launcher is better.

I think the Broadsider is retarded. How does reloading the powder charge work? I'm not a fan of the paddle ball, but you know if I was going to overlook Private Dobbs, a frontline combat soldier armed with a Red Ryder LE BB gun, I can't be too scandalized by the paddle ball. In a playthrough, if I don't like a wacky weapon, like the junk loader, I don't use it and pretend it doesn't exist.

Totally agree about the Fatman. There's a reason Davy Crocketts weren't successful.

We don't know Dobbs carried the gun in battle, he was killed in combat then brought to Sierra, it's silly yes but I can let it slide since maybe the Sierra staff felt like screwing around (like they did with the edited Galaxy News report).

You said before that Fallout has many ridiculous weapons and held actual firearms on the same level as a paddle ball though and whilst I don't like the junk loader either I can still see it work as a weapon since it fires stuff at high velocity.

There's silly things and then there are things that are just too stupid to justify. Fallout 4 has too many wacky weapons, whereas the older games just have the BB gun and the Nuka Cola sign really (probably a couple more but I can't remember right now).

There's the thing: Fallout 4 has NOTHING to offer that other games haven't done already and better. What it has, it's just other things staged or rearranged to seem unique.

This, of course, applies to gear avaleible, subject of matter weapons.

The following categories are botched:
- Energy Weapons has barely any perk (urgh) buffs and has the Laser Rifle. That's it. There's a reskinned version and you can take off the stock. The Musket is a gimmick fired once and the Gatling Laser, good waste of ammo. Oh and there's plasma. Cool I guess, it'de be better if it was different from the laser versions.
- Melee/Unarmed: There's two weapons actually useful in each. The Furious Power Fist, which is just a prefix with a broken buff and that bat with decreased AP cost. Both can be found naturally anyway. The animations and combat with them are incredibly annoying and stupid, Nate is afraid of blocking for more than some set frames and hits like a pussy with asma attacks.
- I'm bored. All of them. The only weapon that behaved normally as for put-put-putting enemies to sleep was a maximodded FuckYou RIfle (Assault) with maxed Semi-Auto and Sniper perks, and it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen and I worked at a butchery for a week.

If I had to name a weapon I "liked" it'd be "none" if I had to say it. Giving some slack, it would be the 10MM Pistol. While switching to it once having 5000 bullets of the weapon above was completely for flavor, the design looks the best 10mm until now and mechanically it wasn't bad. At maxed perks it still moves on Nate's hand like there was a big fat spider on the tip, but animation has some care there and is nice overall.

I wish the 10mm pistol had a revolver weapon mod. ;(

I want my autoloading revolver thingy from fallout 1-2.
To be honest, I never really felt like the 10 mm gun from Fallout 1 and 2 was actually a revolver. It was inspired by a certain picture, but everything in the game tells you that it's a normal automatic (12 rounds makes for a HUGE drum, after all). There's a nice variant of it in the Classic Weapons mod for New Vegas that makes it a simple automatic, I like it.
But if you need it as a revolver in Fallout 4, here you go:

Personally, I just prefer this:

I mean...Its not impossible to make a 12 round revolver, if you load the revolver with ammo clips underneath in some overly complex monstrous mechanism.

I like to imagine it as a kind of Dardick gun.

4 only has two shotguns. I also think the lack of variety is due to the sheer scope of the weapon modification system. Each time I pick up a plasma pistol I don't see it as a plasma pistol I see it as a soon to be plasma sniper. The fact that you can turn a pistol into a sniper makes the pistol inferior and therefore, at least in my mind, definitely lends a hand to the lack of variety issue.

I loved how FO1-2-NV did sidearms.

Less damage.

Less accuracy/range.

BUT!

Lighter, less AP (in some cases)

Higher crit rate.

In the case of .223 pistol, actually MORE damage due to penetration perk, than the sniper rifle!

Yeah back in those days they were actually pistols they weren't just small rifles like they are today. The difference between a pistol and a rifle was profound back in those days but now the only difference is how many perks you put into the right bonuses.

The variety is definitely lacking though 4 did bring a few good guns like the tesla rifle and broadsider though those are the only cool new guns that I can think of. While I do like to cool new guns and to a degree I like the idea of Fallout having a crafting system this current one is absolutely stupid. Yes I want to be able to customize my guns but I don't want to be able to turn a plasma pistol into a plasma sniper.

New Vegas in my opinion was on the right track with its weapon mods. If there were more of those mods and if you could craft them that would be great but that's it. Take for instance the 10mm pistol in NV. The only mods you could get for that gun were the silencer, laser sight and extended magazine. That's perfect. That's all I would like for my pistol. If we could craft those items with several pieces of scrap I think that would be at least more perfect I'm not gonna say anything is perfect though.

All in all I think the weapon crafting system really hurt the variety in 4.

I find it entertaining when Fallout NV, even vanilla seems to have more variety in guns.

Add in Gun runners arsenal? Now we have fucktons of canon guns too, and more variety.

Hell, add just one weapon mod, WMX, and it blows 4 out of the water, times fifty.
