Sounds pretty interesting. Hope it will turn out good.

Kickstarter?

It sounds very cool, and those concept art pics are damn sweet. Good idea to explore Lanius' background, he's one of the better final bosses I've seen in video games. Looking forward to it.

I'm kind of curious what "action epic" exactly refers to though. I really hope it isn't something like SyFy "action epic", but judging by this guy's awards and praised films it (hopefully) won't be like it.

Anyone here seen any of his films?

I take the short will be heavy on epically awesome action gladiator fights. If they'll be awesome in a Michael Bay or in a Bruce Lee way shall remain to be seen....

I'll guess it will be something about him first going to fight with his tribe against the Legion and later he is going to fight his way up to become Legate Lanius. A bit like Spartacus: Blood and Sand. At least that's how I'd imagine his backstory in a nutshell.

Hey Guys. Many thanks to BrotherNone for running the story. A lot of the comments here are pretty right in regards to the direction and style we are taking with the film.

We're exploring the man that Lanius was before he became Caesar's Legatus. In terms of the film style, it'll be more toned down and nuanced than most Fan Films. None of the film will be overblown or too 'Michael Bay'.

Everyone involved are filmmakers working in Australia and abroad. We're huge Fallout fans, but we are filmmakers first. So the idea all along is to make a great film first.

Is that tribal holding a Raquet or a Frying Pan? anyway it is gonna be hard to make it look good in live action.
Pretty cool Concept art.

It's a frying pan. (A little joke from Concept Artist Simon Boxer). Make no bones about it, it's going to be very tricky nailing the elements that can make this work. We're up to the challenge mind you. We're just looking to give the 'Nuka Break' guys some friendly competition. :)

I have no idea what happened to an earlier comment I thought I had posted, but anyway, the gist of it is that I find the news interesting, but I'm wondering how the setting will work out, I'd expect Lanius' backstory to be mostly about tribal warfare with little space for other more prominent parts of the Fallout universe such as the retro sci-fi element and the Mad Max 1 & 2 influences.

Very curious for how it will turn out though, and good luck with the project!

Thanks for the kind words, WUE. We are really aware that the setting is removed from the usual Fallout tropes. A lot of that stuff has been covered by 'Nuka Break'. What we want to do is look at the thematically heavy elements of how this world works. In FO:NV, bloodshed and betrayal played a big part of the world. We want to look at it in a more adult and modern sense.

I'll be honest.

I don't like that whole idea about Romans, Roman legions and its "ideology" (or whatever is an idea behind it) in fallout universe. I think it's wrong approach to a franchise alongside other "streamlinings" Beth. had made. I think it's a lame writers (or whoever is responsible for it) attempt to make wasteland more "deep" in narrative sense, tasteless try to infuse some new lore into the game, it's quasi-intellectual, it's cheap excuse for the lack of ideas and, all in all, wrong approach to broad the lore. But, ok, I know it's the canon now. Hm, I guess joke is on me afterall...

Meh, it's still better idea then Fatmans, Mirvs and other Super Mario fun mind-sets but, I don't think there is much solace in it. IMNSHO.

I wish you good fun if you gonna do it, but that's about all.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, it's a more interesting take than doing a fanservice-filled superficial take, I just found the choice curious since of the many aspects that came out of the Fallout series during the years, tribals have been pretty divisive and didn't feel like they were used all that much.

You're kind of leaning towards the primitive angle, which was what we saw in FO2/Honest Hearts and is firmly hinted to be what constituted most of the tribes that the legion enslaved, but I found it interesting how New Vegas presented some communities as effectively 'tribes' despite being technologically and culturally a lot more advanced than the tribes shown in Fallout 2. I really hope that if tribals get tackled in the future we'll see more of those and less of the stereotypical savages (though at least the Sorrows had good background reasons and I could see them as reasonably sliding into that cultural outset).

looking forward to this.

I liked Nuka Break too, although I only saw first episode which has english subtitles.

Then you missed the point of the Legion entirely. It isn't "Romans IN SPAAA-- err, post-apocalypse", far from it. The Legion depicts a drastically different approach to forming a post-nuclear society: an incredibly effective, single minded society formed on martial ideals and a theocratic/feudal doctrine. It isn't a modern incarnation of Rome: Sallow merely adopted the trappings of Roman legions, such as colours, titles and language, to position himself as a prophet to the tribes he conquered. To them, latin and the look of the Legions are completely alien and came across as a revelation.

Oh yeah, by the way, just because you don't like it, doesn't mean that it's anti-intellectual, tasteless or stupid. Particularly because it's well explained in the game and grounded in the reality of the universe.

You see, bottom line is, I think I’m precisely on the point about it. And here is why, although I don’t like to discuss points that are in essence fictional and self-approving as this is (as all tautologies are). Eventually I will lose, because Bethesda is one who creates rules and reality of that fictional world – I may like it or not, I’m sure it could be done better or with more style but Beth’s “reality” will have the final word about the subject.

As I see it (and please correct me if I’m wrong), you are trying to say that this whole roman idiocy actually is “drastically different approach to forming a post-nuclear society: an incredibly effective, single minded society formed on martial ideals and a theocratic/feudal doctrine”
And I’m saying “it's a lame writers (or whoever is responsible for it) attempt to make wasteland more "deep" in narrative sense, tasteless try to infuse some new lore into the game, it's quasi-intellectual, it's cheap excuse for the lack of ideas and, all in all, wrong approach to broad[en] the lore”

First, there is nothing drastic about using Romans as an example of post-apoc. autocratic system. All ideas that have been used by “Caesar's Legion” are old as human race (or even older). Dominance, slavery, iconography, idolatry, sacrifice and the rest, are nothing original to CL. They are purely reference point because someone in Bethesda thought “Hey, those roman legions are cool, let’s copy that into the game, it maybe awesome and fun”. Imo, it’s that simple (or slightly more complex maybe, but trust me – not much). Nothing wrong with that per see, but is it original? I think not. Is it somehow lame and lazy? I think so. Could it be done in more original way? I’m convinced. That’s all.
About fitting into fallout. Well, after fuckership zeta – this is indeed moot point: everything goes, but still, I find it somehow out of place that’s all. I still have an illusion that not all things are appropriate.

Not so related, it’s a long time since I played that but I remember how laughable my first encounter with one of the CL’s scouts was. In his skirt and funny looking hat and sword... I don’t know, you maybe living in some secluded and tranquil place, but in my world, that poor guy wouldn’t live few second against any gun or animal (maybe cow or something). Nothing effective about it.

About tastelessness and quasi-intellectual thingy. The CL is bland, without any flash why so much anger toward the world, their naming (Frumentarii, decanii, Praetorians, etc) is intentional copycatting as a try to link this “legions” to a real ones from the past by giving it a taste “of the past”. Not original at all imo.

To cut long story short (I could clarify further if needed), instead to create original cult (not the best example but i.e. the Children of the Cathedral), mr. Pagliarulo used proven but not always successful tactic of using old ideas.

As I said at the start of this long post, in the multi/universe (the real one) where all events are eventually possible if not strictly forbidden by the laws of physics, I’m aware that this things can happen somewhere, but it wouldn’t be the fallout universe that I acknowledge as original one.
And lastly, tell me honestly, what would you think if you came across someone running toward you in a skirt and a knife? And he start to talk about world dominance? How anybody sane can not find it profoundly... wrong? Especially in the world full of guns and Fatmans?
Oh, wait...
