Fallout: New Vegas Fan Interview Part 2

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Another portion of community questions about Fallout New Vegas has been answered over at Bethsoft forums. Most things that can interest you are here: <blockquote>How many new perks are there planned to be included in Fallout: New Vegas?
Project Director Josh Sawyer: A lot. We've removed some old perks, modified some existing perks, and added a bunch of new ones. We believe that New Vegas' selection of perks will make the selection process difficult but rewarding for the player.

Will there be character "traits" as in the classic Fallout games?
JS: Yes. During character creation, you will have the option to select one or two traits. Traits include some of the classics, like Small Frame (in F:NV it gives a bonus to AG but you break limbs more easily), and new ones, like Four Eyes (bonus to PE while wearing glasses, penalty while not).

What kinds of Companions will we see this time round.
JS: We have a varied cast of companions ranging from Raul the ghoul mechanic to Boone the ex-NCR sniper to some more unusual fellows. Each of the companions has their own personal conflict the player can help resolve. These conflicts can be relatively simple to address or they can involve major quests that span the Mojave Wasteland.

Will there be anything like Fallout 3's bobbleheads in New Vegas to collect?
JS: Yes, there will be something similar to bobbleheads in the game, and you'll receive an in-game reward for finding them. That said, they do not give you SPECIAL or skill bonuses when found.</blockquote>Ah, that sounds much better.<blockquote>Are Bottlecaps the source of currency or will it be poker chips?
JS: Bottlecaps are the main currency in the Mojave Wasteland. Bottlecaps are a water-backed currency controlled and regulated by NCR merchant caravans. The caravan houses conspired to re-introduce the currency when traders lost faith in NCR money. This loss of faith was the result of the NCR moving from a gold-backed currency to fiat currency due to repeated attacks on NCR gold reserves by the Brotherhood of Steel. Though the transition helped stabilize NCR's economy, NCR dollars are devalued compared to bottlecaps and even more devauled when compared with the third form of currency: Legion coins. Caesar's Legion mints silver and gold coins from captured pre-war material. Despite the NCR's running conflict with the Legion, merchants and citizens throughout the Mojave Wasteland accept all three forms of currency.

Poker chips are used by all functional casinos. Each casino has its own chips that must be used for gambling. Players can exchange any form of currency for chips and can receive their payout in any form of currency. Mr. House doesn't let the ongoing war get in the way of potential profits.

Will we be able to keep playing once we beat the game with this one?
JS: This is something we really wanted to do, but ultimately we realized that supporting post-endgame content would jeopardize the quality of the ending, which we wanted to tell the definitive stories for all of our major factions, locations and characters. Instead, after the credits roll the game will prompt you to reload a save created just before the endgame sequence, allowing players to go back and complete any quests they may have missed. Additionally, we make it very clear when you're about to reach the end of the main plot, so it shouldn't come across as a surprise.

Will I be able to play, and complete, F:NV without killing anyone or anything, except perhaps in self-defense?
JS: Yes. There are ways to win the main plot by killing no one and by killing everyone. It was one of our initial design tenets. You will find it difficult to get by as a pacifist, and you will miss a great deal of content by killing everyone you meet, but it can be done. </blockquote>We trust you on that one, Obsidian.

This is some of the best news we've gotten on New Vegas. Excellent stuff and a huge refresher from the boring trailer.

Yeah, most of it sounds pretty good.
But then you look at that goddamn trailer again and you just go: "Right..."

YES! this is the best batch of news in a long time. traits ftw! also, no immortal npc's is a huge bonus that I actually didn't see coming.

it's clear that Obsidian put a lot more thought into the game than Bethesda ever did. I had faith in them to do so, and it's good to see actual proof of it.

This time at least the intention ogf the devs seems good.
By rearraring core-elements and character development back towards the original game spirit, it seems obisidian is acknowledging that bethesdas fallout 3 wasnt sufficient as a fallout game.

This is a whole bunch of good news: traits, modified perks, interesting "live" companions, pacifist option.... It seems they might just have the right fundamentals on this one. Wonder if they will get the right ballance - gameplay and bug wise.

All we need now are the dumb dialogue lines. Sadly it has been confirmed as not included. Oh well, I'm friggin happy with traits already!

It is really like Obsidian looked at everything that was wrong with FO3 and was intent on fixing it. Amazing.

I love that bobblehead equivalent will no longer give stat bonuses.
And traits!

And this gem:

Nice (sarcasm) to see governments screwing up people with their fiat currencies even three hundred years in the future.

Well, we already had a game full of those :smug:

Great news about traits, not being able to max out all skills, the removal of most useless skill perks, no "boobleheads" that affect SPECIAL or skills, pacifist walkthrough... Great news, indeed.

That Q and A was just full of awesome!
Its too bad though it still has to have Fallout 3 graphics, which to me at least make the game seem less serious (but at least they are fixing a lot of the mechanics and making it more like F1 and 2)

I like that there is sense behind the currency stuff. Hope, there will be a lot sense behind everything else too.

Nope, earlier they said that it's going to be included in the game.

F:NV looks really promising. So I guess I'll go with the "HA! Obsidian are WAY better than Bethesda, F:NV was much better than F3 (according to sales)!" in your face option to beth fanboys, rather than the "How does it feel to have a shitty game in your loved sequel?"

The casino chips, "you may turn any currency into chips, and then turn your chips back into any currency" - I hope this isn't meaning that I can abuse this system to turn a currency into chips, then immediately turn it into another currency. I'm not sure if that would suck (yeah), but it would be a bug.

I'm not sure that would even be a bug. It's been said that all the currencies have exchange rates.

So it's not like you'd turn 45 caps into 45 chips into 45 NCR dollars.
You'd turn 45 caps into 10 chips into 500 NCR dollars etc.

I wonder if there are quests you can do to sabotage and inflate/deflate specific currencies. Like blowing up a legion production plant to both hurt their cause and raise the value of what you have.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I'm feeling right now. It all reads great on paper, but when I look at the trailer, jeez, I don't know. Guess we'll all have to wait and see how it all comes together.

Also: Woo! Traits!

Low intelligence options have actually been confirmed, though they won't be the 'every line is replaced by mindless gibberish' they were in Fallout 1 and 2, but more like 'completely missing the point' lines.
Oh, and great news by the way. :)

Yep. What I like especially is that BoS are not the Knights in Shining Armor, they care for themselves, they attack the gold reserves. That's really nice.

I don't think it will be a bug at all, but instead a great gimmick for the casinos. Who is going to go travel to a casino to exchange money and not a play a hand or two of blackjack...3 hours later, doh!

This sounds very promising for a change.

While the trailer didn't do much for me, I think that I might be able to ignore the shitty gunplay if the game doesn't throw retarded in my face all the time like its predecessor. Maybe I'll like it regardless of that if they manage to build an engrossing world and storyline.

I agree even Fallout 3 with its absolutely bad dialogues and shooter gameplay would have been 100% more enjoyable if at least the world would have been plausible.
