The Sequel to the Fallout 3 is Garbage video, likely for New Vegas's 10 year anniversary.

Can't say there is a huge amount that is new for the most knowledgeable here, but would recommend for the titbits I was not aware of, as well as for a refresher. It's nice hearing praise for a fantastic game many of us adore.

Arguably, the Fallout 3 video did create a little more discourse surrounding the game, and we have seen it mentioned here a fair amount (and personally, after playing NV after fallout 3 and looking for a justification as to why I thought it was much better, against what I thought was the majority opinion, seeing that video was quite a relief and helped lead me here.)

Enjoy!

A video I will not watch because for some reason, it doesn't have subtitles (even auto generated).

Unless he's responding to you dissing Dark Souls 2. Then he'll get upset as I do about Bioshock Infinite.
It's like every youtuber always has this one game that they are massive fanboys about it and think whatever criticism gets thrown at it is unjustified, and they always end up making a long ass video trying to discredit said criticism.

Mauler did make a 10 hour response (i'm not joking) to Hbomber's video defending Dark Souls 2, and in a hilarious irony basically said he wasn't gonna watch all the videos because it was too long. The same man that does one hour plus videos on various pieces of media.

Also, pretty hilarious that Manytrueanerd responded to this video saying he agrees when you just know he can't wait to make "Fallout New Vegas is worse than you think". But i think he knows he'll get a big blowback from a ton of people if he does that.

To be fair to HBomber, Mauler having a ten hour response isn't some achievement. Most people are taught during education that more does not mean better. To me it suggests he's a really poor critical analyst.

That being said, I think HBomber's video on DS2 is pretty poor, but it's a pockmark on an otherwise smooth roster.

Yeah I've actually listened to the whole rebuttal from MauLer and of course Matthew's initial video and Hbomber's two videos that led to MauLer's response. I got time at work to listen to videos and it still took me like 2 weeks to get through it all. MauLer said he liked Hbomber's Fallout 3 video though.

To me it suggests he's a really poor critical analyst.
I don't even care for MauLer but he really wasn't. He just really went out of his way to prove his points and be thorough though sometimes he spent more time than he needed to on points. I don't care for 10 hour analyses of movies that aren't even kino to begin with so that DS2 series was the only one of his I've watched.

That's my main issue with Mauler, he could say the same by using less words and still have the same effect. I do like that he leaves no stone unturned and he's very thorough, which is something a lot of critics don't do.

That said, I enjoyed HBomber's critique of New Vegas quite alot. He even mentioned a few things I never considered, like the Cazadors near Red Rock Canyon being a "troll move", you think they're regular bug enemies like a Bloatfly or Mantis and then you get obliterated by them.

I love pretty much all of Harris' videos but he has some weird contrarian opinions on some stuff, film and television especially, which I think stems from an urge to give a lot of the media he views the benefit of the doubt. I believe he's said that he likes the Transformers movies and his favorite Star Wars films are the prequels, which I suppose isn't as much of a controversial opinion as it used to be.

He's been teasing this video for a while now though so I'm happy to see that it's out.

These guys can fuck you up if you're not careful

Actually started replaying Vegas here recently. It's been a lot of fun again. I had forgotten just how really damn bad the Legion was. BOS strapping a bomb collar on your kneck and forcing you to do dangerous things is also pretty cruel. Not quite the recluse saints I remembered.

-Jacobstown is the best faction with Boomers in second.
-Carbine, sniper rifle and That gun are my favorite weapons.
-Pipboy 3000 is better than F4 redesign.
-Arcade, Lily, Boone and Veronica are my favorite companions (Boone is kinda what I'd imagine a fallout Toront to be like).
-High INT stealth build is the way to go.
-OWB was disapointing at first back when I first played it due to its quirkyness being the opposite of what I wanted/expected, but is def the best dlc. It's the most fun to play.
-Dead money was terrible to play, but had awesome story. I think it's best experienced like a film by watching someone else play it (the setting has strong Shadow Man vibes).
-House is the most fun option, but morally I'd side with either NCR, or independent. It's a shame the followers have such little presence.
- I like to roleplay by carrying a coffee pot, cigarettes, book and cooking skillet. It's something I've done since I was a teen and I have to do it every playthrough or it doesnt feel right. I dont even smoke.
-That pain sound and animation geckos do when they grab their head makes me feel guilty as fuck.
- I keep all the legion coins I find as I have an irl cronic issue with collecting coins.
- Exploring morality in apocolypse settings has always felt off to me as it puts a lot of ethics in extreme conditions that seem like they're designed to break moral systems. Not bad to explore limits, but definetly can come off as contrived too.
-West side leaves me wanting more.
-How the hell are there no settlements built around the remains of old bridges/interchanges and parking buildings? Seems obvious and like the place would give all kinds of great ideas while building it.
- Fuck Cazadores

In fairness to the Brotherhood, they're a wanted tribe in reclusion for their own safety. Some well-armed traveller comes waltzing down into your bunker and knows the passcode of one of their Paladin teams, something they'd only learn if the Paladins were dead. Seems VERY fishy. Honestly, keeping you alive is something I wouldn't even do as the Elder. I'd torture the person to find out if they had any friends who knew where they were, and if they didn't I'd merk them.

Remember, if you turn up with Veronica and therefore have someone to vouch for your safety, they don't do anything like that and let you in without any problem.

Can you elaborate on this?

There was a settlement originally called Underpass which was exactly that, but it got cut. There's mods to restore it IIRC, and it was actually meant to be just outside Westside.

I feel like one thing that the classic Fallout games understood better than newer ones is that there's a reason that towns exist where they do.

Like, people didn't just see The Hub and figure "Hey pre-war buildings, let's move in". It was in the exact middle point between multiple other neighbouring civilisations AND had a clean supply of water, meaning that the cities' Oligarchs could effectively use it to e̶x̶t̶o̶r̶t̶ trade with the rest of the Wasteland.

There's only reason to interact with a pre-war ruin if there's something valuable about it. A Parking Building might provide temporary shelter, but unless there's long-term trade value, stashes of pre-war tech we no longer have the ability to replicate, or otherwise some unique way of cultivating crops in it, ultimately it'd be more beneficial to just cut down a few trees and start a farm by the Colorado River then to just squat in a parking lot.

@Atomic Postman I should clarify that I can't think of any examples of this in NV itself, but it just got me thinking of how apocalyptic settings can really struggle with these things. Walking Dead for example had Aikido failing to live up in a zombie mass murder cult setting which is just shit writing and then the older woman blowing a schizophrenic kids brains out. Can't imagine parents with a mentally unstable child watching that one. Survivalist stories tend to face plant stuff like that a lot in a really irresponsible way imo.

@Jogre Yeah, that's true. I just think you want to have fun/interesting settings thrown in and using bridges and prewar buildings doesn't seem to have been utilized all that well so far. Just put the bridge/interchange or parking building near a resource like water, or in a geographically advantageous area and you can still use the concept fine.
Placing a major settlement around an intact power station and it's subsequent remaining transmission towers

is something I'd like to see as they are often located near highways or train tracks to boot.

I can't stand either of those guys personally, they're both autistic but Mauler in particular is a lot like Anderson where they'll proceed to autisticly talk about the minutiae of some mechanics and story and really say nothing of substance, seeing his critiques on movies exacerbates this even more. The streams he's been doing recently are worse since without a script he goes on even longer than he would with a regular video. Hbomb doesn't really put across any interesting points at all and I won't respect him until he releases his naruto porn commentary.

Joseph Anderson is a good comparison. That guy is trash at videos. Says fuck all but people see a bloated runtime and think it must be serious commentary.

That's not to say long commentary is bad, Noah-Caldwell-Gervais's four hour long video on red dead redemption is one of my favourite on the internet but it's not bloated by any means.
