Fallout: New Vegas recommended mods

Man this is going fast. Guess it's the advantage of having Fallout 3 as a base.

Any mods particularly recommendable for old-school players? Any NMA users out there willing to write a "recommended mod" list for us coz that seems to be the hot thing these days.

An inherent problem with the ease of access to the GECK, is that a lot of crap/redundant mods are released, for reasons unknown to me. Wading through all the junk is kind of a pain. Looking forward to seeing suggested mods I might have missed.

Depending on how you feel about combat,

http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34736

Has some options to suit your taste.

I play a melee char with this, so it isn't just for shooting, just have to use drugs.

What really sucks is finding a mod that sounds cool, and has a bunch of features you really like, and then one out of place feature that totally kills it and makes you not download it.

There are few I would recommend in particular (the ones I am currently playing with):

T3T Misc Item Icons - New Vegas
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34737

Inventory Sorters
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34950

DarNified UI NV
Code:
http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1135390-wipzbeta-darnified-ui-nv/
(Even to this day, it puzzles me why it is not on Nexus)

Centered 3rd Person Camera
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34744

New Vegas - Re-Animated
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35028

Western Sky
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35497
(This really depends on your taste, but I quite like the way sky is altered.)

Pipboy Glove remover
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34734

DOF Depth of Field
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35589

Pipboy 2000 Readius Retexture
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36326
(Return of the King)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O.K., those were more of cosmetic mods, now to the game play changes:

Realistic Repair
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34898

Community Bug Fix Compilation Patch
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35909
(A must-have, compatible with Patch/Update 2)

Light Step ED-E
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35526
(Another nuisance eliminated)

Reduced Load-Screen Fast Travel Markers
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35467
(Improved map markers placement)

Realistic Headshots
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35037

Bottle That Water
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34840

Stealth Boy Rechargeable
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35975
(Simple yet great mod by Lexx)

Pointiac
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35707
(Among many changes, tagged skills now get raised by +2, balance tweaks also applied)

Puce Moose Tweak and Balance Center
Code:
http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35015
(From one of the best story tellers of F3 comes this module. Nastier Mines, XP Adjuster and many others)

Enjoy

So if you do a quick search on the nexus, you'll see that there are a million flavors of repair mods. I understand why, lots of people think degrading items are annoying and I kind of agree, but the flip-side to that coin is that the game world economy has been 'balanced' (heh) around the vanilla condition and repair system. Not to mention perks like Jury Rigging and certain companion perks function to make repairing a little easier. We dilute their value when it becomes too easy to maintain items.

My point? If you nodded your head in agreement with what I'm saying, you might find Metal Squeezer appealing. It doesn't change the repair system at all, but it takes 'junk' and turns it into scrap metal. This is a 1:1 process, so you can junk tin cans or vacuum cleaners, both are worth just 1 piece of scrap per item. Its nice because the game world is still 'losing items' and conversely it lets you make more weapon repair kits. Without changing the balance too much.

Now, I'm going to be a hypocrite and recommend some mods that do change the balance; but hey, we all know the only kind of shit we like is our own bull-shit.

Community Bug Fix (see above post)- good stuff, except the most recent version introduced a small graphics bug. Check the description to see how to remove it.

URWL does wonders for the lighting. It made my days look bright and dusty, and my nights _reasonably_ dark. Does give some black NPCs a slight greenish tint in the wrong lighting but I like it the most out of all the light adjusting mods.

2nd-ed the Reduced Load Screen Map Markers (wtf is with this name). It's really just more map markers at logical locations. See above.

Improved Items Durability: yea, i'm a hypocrite: oh well. Its just enough to make up for some items being stupid weak. Actually, it wasn't quite enough for me (I lowered it more by 5% for each).

Weight balance, 'nuff said.

Fix Autoaim / VATS, I would only get the version that fixes autoaim and vats WITHOUT vats immunity or the binoculars. Better binoculars are to be found.. here.

Lexx has two mods, one that fixes how combat armor is distributed in the game (was script error so this is a real fix, I believe) and another that makes the BoS Combat Armor look more like we remember it.

Oh, you should look into the ATI or nvidia d3d performance fixes. And the stutter remover if you're having any performance issues. Just search d3d on nexus to get the links to the performance fixes.

I don't generally like retexured weapons, but this guy has really done the 22, 9mm and varmint rifle justice. There is also a laser pistol -> Wattz 1000 conversion on the nexus somewhere. Don't know about it, but the gun retexs are great.

NoNoise is great, removed some annoying sounds except kept the fanfare from ED-E. If you want a version that removes the fanfare, say so and I'll upload my edited version.

This Four Eyes tweak 'fixes' four eyes, imo. If you have 6 PER and take the trait, the game considers you to have 5 PER for the purpose of all perks / mumbo-jumbo. This doesn't change the net effect of the trait, just how its implemented. Requires a new game, though.

There is a mod by Lfox that adds in a bunch of missing ammo recipes, so if you take the Hand Loader perk, you actually what it promised. I really like it, especially in conjunction with the missing ammo loot mod that adds primer, lead, casings, etc to 'junk' loot (i.e. dumpsters, trashcans) but in a sparring manner. You don't see it often, just sometimes.

There's also tweaks to how death is handled. Reduced rag-doll effect, reduced chances of dismember / explode, and reduced dismember force. It all adds up to much more enjoyable experience, imo. When you gibb someone or whatever, it's common and you don't think twice about it. With that host of mods, its actually novel and enjoyable (if you're sick like me) when it occurs. I'm getting really tired of linking to things though so I think I'm gonna stop. If you or anyone else is interested in more, just say so.

Ahh fuck it, I'll just dump my plugin list in case anyone cares.

Wow, this is some nice selection you've got here, agris. I always wondered what the heck that annoying parade/fanfare noise was when traveling with ED-E and Boone. I also applied Weight Balance and Four Eyes tweak. This is some great job on the modding fellas. I can also tell you're usin' DOF, same here but on Middle. I also recently started using some of these:

Realistic Power Armor Because really it shouldn't weigh so much when worn. There is also a neat night-scope vision added to all Power Armors.

Pipboy Glove Remover Does what says.

Some good ol' classic modules:
Classic Wattz 1000 Pistol
Classic MEC Gauss Minigun
Classic Supersledge
Classic HK L30 Gatling Laser
Classic YK42B
Classic Plasma Grenade
Classic Black Leather Armor
Classic Glock 86 Plasma Pistol
Classic Wattz 2000 Laser Rifle
Classic Pulse Grenade
Classic RadAway

Enjoy

Here's a custom version of the "no noise" mod that removes the fanfare when ED-E sees someone, but it also restores his humming / buzzing sound.

Custom NoNoise

Do you know if there is a mod that hides a dialogue option if skill requirement for it is not met?
(so if I have speech 65, then option that requires speech of 70 is not displayed).
Or at least something that hides prefixes with exact numbers (leaving [speech] instead of [speech 70].

Sometimes, low-requirement text entries lead to a different dialogue outcome. What you want would remove this.

It would be better to remove the skill tags instead.

"Realistic Headshots" may break your game if you play shoot&scoot type of character. It ups the scoped weapons' lethality to really high levels, making it possible to steamroll the most of game with 5.56 (Varmint or Ratslayer and That Gun).

Also certain characters (Boone and Raul in particular) seem to prefer going for headshots. The mod makes them even more lethal.

Because below-requirement entries mean "wrong answer", so there is no point in choosing them anyway. And this kind of numbers in dialogue screw the mood and the role-play aspect for me :P

But when I think of it: removing them completely could break some dialogue lines, so just hiding skill values (or changing them to "skill"/"skill too low") by them would be good enough.

I need to come back on that link I posted earlier.
I have been running into several problems with it since I used it, some areas like the swimming pool in the Ultra Luxe cause a CTD and some of the character such as Nero and Big Sal wander around in underwear because one of the files in the patch messes with clothes value.

There is at least one quest in the game that can be aquired with using such a low-requirement line.

The fact is that 99% of people aren't going to click on it because they're afraid that it's "wrong" and will "fuck" them over.

People are weird like that.

Personally, I think being able to make the wrong answer goes a long way to making the roleplaying better.

Like in Fallout 2 when you can out and out insult people.

That's why I say the tags in front of the dialogues are the problem. Without them, you wouldn't know for sure to what outcome a dialogue option will lead.
