Fallout on PC Gamer top games list

What about all the other clasic DOS games, like Lemmings, Moneky Island, Sam and Max.

Pshaw, everyone knows that old games are awful. Graphics keep getting better thus, ipso facto, games are getting better.

E gads, I got my copy of the issue today (I'm cancelling whenever the subscription ends, but until then, I'll keep you updated) and ick, the whole spread is horrid. For each game, they give maybe an inch of space, which is predominantly consumed by who made the game and when it was put out. Comment wise, they only have about 3 lines for each game. Fallout, being in the top 10, got a little more space, but it was relatively trivial commentary on it. The why it's good was simply a quote from a guy on their forum and the what next just said that bethesda luckily for all of us (their thoughts not mine), picked up the franchise.

Isn't PC Gamer the one that gave Bloodlines a terrible review, and ripped it for not being Half Life 3? Yeah, I think that mag is going bye bye soon.

ripped it doesnt' even begin to describe it... even when they were doing their preview of Bethesdas next elder scrolls game, they wrote in the article "Seeing as the only real rpg to come out last year, Vampire Bloodlines, was buggy beyond belief and a total disappointment at release, we're left only to depend on bethesda for our RPG fix." Essentially, every time they get the chance, they take a shot at troika.

Well, I've never paid for a PC Gamer, and I'm not going to start now (I refuse to so much as read one again). Their quality hasn't increased during the years, and it was dismal from my first experience. I remember the unbelievably hype and praise they heaped on Black & White, and then doing their readers a disservice with a dishonest, rose-tinted review.

Last year, when I purchased a game, I was offered three free issues. I decided that it might be worth another try, after all, the staff had most likely changed. The free issues I received were no better, and after the three issues they sent me a bill for a year's subscription. Of course I threw it away. A month later, they sent me a letter stating that they had contracted a debt collection agency on behalf of my outstanding bill with them.

After such tactics, I refuse to so much as read their magazine again.

Egad! I hate how they put stuff in the fine print saying they'll put you in for a year unless you send them a letter saying you want to unsubscribe.

Ya I read PC gamer a few times. They sure like to give "interesting" reviews. I wonder how much money they get paid to write positive articles on games from crap company's?

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Well, they *did* at least appreciate Civ2 and UFO:Enemy Unknown.

I'm glad to see that all these years later, they're still giving X-Com props.

Too bad InfoAtari decided to bury the fucking francise, after years of having Hasbro piss on it.

As for PCGamer, I really liked it back in the day. I have issues that were 300+ pages. Now the damn thing is shorter than the newspaper. It's sad, really. I can't justify buying a mag for 5 bucks that i can read in like 30 minutes.

Jeez.

Nothing about Master of Orion series?
zippo about the Quest For Glory series.

Edit:
fuck, i'm blind.

17. Command and Conquer: Red Alert
18. Far Cry
19. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
these

and
35. Neverwinter Nights
about crowns it all.

*shudder*

You can use DOS Box to get it to run in windows though (MS DOS Emulator) which will also run Fallout 1 in DOS mode in Windows :) Oh and it will run in a Windows on your Desktop.

Unfortunately, that also requires knowledge of how to use a command line to manually mount the folders, so that excudes most of PC Gamer's readership. :D

1. Half-Life - greatest PC Game of all time? I don't think so.

2. Doom - Safe pick, I can understand why they have it so high.

3. Sid Meier's Civilization II- Hmmm... Go with the original or the latest, why II?

6. Diablo- single handedly created a genre that has yet to produce one worthwhile game. GREAT pick!

8. X-Com Enemy Unknown - This is for Street credentials

9. Battlefield 1942 - Huh?

10. Fallout -Yeah! I won't pick bones about where in the top 10, but this should definitely be there, good pick.

11. Baldur's Gate- Questionable, at best. Certainly not a sure in.

12. Grand Theft Auto 3- ughh, port.

13. Star Wars: Tie Fighter - Yeah, I thought this one was alright

15. Duke Nukem 3D - This might have been fun when it came out, but nothing that with stood the test of time.

18. Far Cry -Maybe a number 50, but 18? Yeah right.

19. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Didn't I see this title at number 11? Munchkism at its worse in this title.

23. The Sims - I thought Simcity 2000 was the best of the Sims, my humble opinion.

27. Deus Ex - Good pick, I thinking man's first person shooter that has yet to be done again. Bloodlines comes close, but goes a different direction.

29. SimCity 2000 - See #23.

35. Neverwinter Nights - Can you say worst pick ever?

37. Tomb Raider- A playstation port of a fem fatale with boobies... PC gaming at its finest.

39. System Shock 2 - Another game to stand the test of time, I'd take this one over any of 2004's big market FPSers.

41. Max Payne - interesting, liked the nior motif... Great? nah.

44. Master of Orion - Yep, can't argue with this one.

50. Freedom Force- This is the sort of the game that should be high one the list, or not at all.

There are some of my select opinions, opinions that are open to refutation and disagreement.

First off, good graphics != good games. In fact, more often than not, it's entirely the opposite. Some company puts out a load of trash that's essentially just a copy of a game that's already been done under 4 names and tries to make it "uber" by putting a bunch of pretty eye candy on top. Big whoop. It's beautiful certainly, but you play it once, maybe twice then it's completely borring.

I'll take depth, storyline and content over graphics any time. Sure I'd prefer all of the above, but when you have to choose (which seems pretty common especially lately), that's my vote.

In reference to PC Gamer - It's been said for a long time by those in the business that you can skip all the actual reviews in PC gamer and just flip through looking at the full page ads. Remember the companies who you saw and then go back through the book. You'll be able to predict with a high degree of accuracy who got good reviews.

In other words, people who pay them the cash get praises and raves, people who don't typically get shreded in an effort to make those that do look better. Been that way for ages, and I learned a long time ago that it's the last place to look for insightful and objective reviews. I doubt it's gonna fold up soon though, as this has been going on a long time and they make a ton of money on those big ads.

Too bad about PCXL going belly up. Now there was a gamer's magazine. I've still got my last couple years worth of issues stashed somewhere, along with the freebie Girls of Gaming callendars and the like. They're getting kinda ancient these days though lol

I remember when Tie Fighter was #1. It should still be in that position.

-goes and reinstalls Tie Fighter, rebels must die!-

I was kidding around, just giving a goofy response to Wild Qwerty pointing out that they almost completely favor recent games and eye-candy FPS's. In actuality I pretty much agree with everything you said.

\/ No problem at all, just didn't want you to think I was serious.

Noted, and sorry if I came off a little strong. I didn't intend it that way, but re-reading I can see it might have seemed so.

I guess the real attitude where people actually feel (and game developers keep trying to convince us) that "empty but pretty eye candy == best game evah!" irks me even more than I thought. ;)

I gotta remember though being the "new kid" around that I don't know people's tendancies where things like sarcasm are concerned, so this will be a good reminder for me.

Perhaps because they thought it was the best of the three?
I know I did, although I've played the other two much less.
6. Diablo- single handedly created a genre that has yet to produce one worthwhile game. GREAT pick!
In your opinion. I enjoyed Diablo. As did many others. It wasn't a |"deep" game, or complex. But I don't recall it ever pretending to be.

Also, it didn't create the genre, seeing as how it was a clone, albeit one with vastly better graphics and playability.
12. Grand Theft Auto 3 - ughh, port.
...and this matters? The game was exponentially better on PC. If you dislike the game, then fine - say that. I have no problem with people disliking a game (there are plenty of reasons with this one) but at least be honest about it. The fact that a game is a port in no way affects how good it was, or the affect it had on later games.
27. Deus Ex - Good pick, I thinking man's first person shooter that has yet to be done again. Bloodlines comes close, but goes a different direction.
Thinking man's? Get over yourself.
It was an FPS with stealth, character progression and an X-Files plot. Not that I didn't enjoy it somewhat but, really, get over yourself.
There are some of my select opinions, opinions that are open to refutation and disagreement.
Okay then.

Don't take me so seriously. Whilst I disagree with some of your comment, there are some that do I agree with.

I sorta agree on Civilization, although I never played Civ2. I just feel that generally the original should get the credit.

Now that I think about it, where the fuck is Syndicate? I never played a game like it before or after. Except Syndicate Wars, which doesn't count in my book. Bloody Syndicate Wars.

1. Half-Life: best ever? maybe not, but definately one of the best & most influencial
4. Half-Life 2: what the fuck have they been sniffing?
9. Battlefield 1942: and where is CS then? i know many of you dislike it but it's way better than BF42
14. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: what? any other Tom Clancy pc game is better than Ghost Recon...
20. Call of Duty: enjoyable, yes, but to mention in this list? no thanks.
23. The Sims: RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!
28. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed: you gotta be kidding me...
34. Total Annihilation: TA before Dark Reign 1? what the fuck?
...

Well, Rosh, they did count Wing Commander 3.

More of a WC4 guy, though, myself.

Incidentally, after three years of subscription, this is the first issue I've got that actually came with the demo disk.

I'm still not renewing it.
