My experience will bullies was you had to strike hard and fast - multiple blows to their face. Now at the start of high school I fought almost every bully in my year level, I didn't really win any of those fights, but I didn't lose them either, but the most important factor was I was left alone after confronting these bullies. Sometimes violence is the only solution when you're dealing with cretins - and after the violence comes a certain level of respect, and sometimes even a friendship.
In my second year at high school I was forced to fight a guy a couple year levels above me, he was bigger and stronger, but I stood my ground and gave him a big fright, unfortunately I broke my hand on his face, but the pain felt with a broken hand is nothing compared to the pain felt with fear and intimidation.

When I was a freshmen, I had no self-esteem. I had my shit kicked in more times than I could count. and talking to my parents, or the school only made it worse.
There was one bully in particular. he was just a dick. one day in Gym, he took my glasses and stomped them. I snapped, and choked him out, and beat the holy hell out of him... In-front of a teacher and forty other kids. needless to say, I was suspended for a week, and no body screwed with me for the rest of the year.
The next year, some little scrappy spit-fuck (Freshmen, about 110 lbs) decided to push me. (also in gym)
He got the trashcan treatment.
Long story short, Teach your kids to defend themselves.
