FIFE - open source RPG engine with Fallout support

You guys could even do Fallout 3, old school fallout style.
Hehe seriously: that's not our job :-)

We'll just try to deliver a good 2D ISO engine and good modding tools. But we would be very happy to see a real FO3 made by fans based on FIFE. You're not bound to the FO2 ruleset anymore so you could even modify all aspects of Fallout for a new part. I guess you'll end up using the FO2 gfx though or you know some gfx workaholics ;-)

Yea, if it has some good tools and is easy to use and script, dont be surprised if you see FO3: Fan Edition

There are people who would be willing to spend the time on it, because it would be considerably easier and quicker then modding FO2

I'm happy to announce a new official FIFE public release :-) You can download the Win32 binary for the the 2006.1 release here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fife/FIFE_2006.1_win32.exe?download

Users who are on Linux, Mac, FreeBSD and other unix-like system can grab the sourcecode and give compiling a go:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fife/FIFE_2006.1_src.tar.bz2?download

Not many new awesome features this time as we've focused on improving the code and creating a stable code basis for the next versions. We didn't have the time to write a long readme. If you encounter problems: just post at the fifengine.de forums or in this thread. Have fun :-)

A short list of the most important changes and new features:
* New guichan widgets
* Scriptable LUA gui (see guitest and content/scrips)
* Better code documentation
* Taking screenshots
* New renderbackend approach
* A LOT of fixes :-)

The people working on it have more experience now, but is there any reason to think they will finish it in less time than they spent working on IanOut, or that nothing will happen to cause further slowdowns, false starts or cancellation in that additional timespan?

Don't cry for us Pergentina ;-)

We're still working on FIFE but searching for a new lead coder now. You can read the full story here:
https://mirror1.cvsdude.com/trac/fife/engine/wiki/2006/07/21/06.06

Nevertheless here is a new screenshot. It features our new angry alter ego that is able to walk around the maps :-) No blockers integrated yet but we're making small steps forward:

Okay here we go :-)

Our coders were really hard working this weekend and here is the result:
http://members.fifengine.de/bin/FIFE_r673_win32.exe

Really some new great stuff introduced:
* Rewritten AsyncSM (doens't crash with invalid scripts anymore but just puts a warning into the logs)
* Fixed a lot of memory leaks
* Vastly increased performance (went from 100fps to 350fps on my system)

We've introduced a camera mode. The camera ensures smooth scrolling now and works really well :-) It will be possible to "attach" the camera to a critter later and use this for a kind of "storytelling" mode. And most important: the camera does automatically scroll to the active critters when the map is set up. That means your "What the heck? The whole map is black. Where am I"-issues are solved now :-)

Sounds like some really great progress here. I eagerly await the day I can use this to its full potential.

Today we've got something quite important to announce :-) FIFE will turn one soon and that means we hope to celebrate its birthday with the community together.

It was an irc meeting at Sunday 2005/09/04 where the majority of the ianout team decided to start working on an own engine core. We were still searching for a name for the new team and decided to use FIFE at the meeting that took place one week later. Some will say that the team formed at 09/04 so this should be the birthday. But as the sourceforge project was registered at 09/11, the team agreed on the name FIFE at 09/11 and as 09/11 is so easy to remember we've agreed to celebrate the project birthday at this day :-)

So every developer, ex-developer, fanboy (and -girl), FIFE-hater, Fallout fan and everyone else is invited to have a nice chat in our irc channel and celebrate a bit together. There is no set start time; I'll be pretty busy so I won't be around before 7PM GMT. I hope to see you there :-) here is the server information:
* Network: TechnoMagick.org
* Server: chrome.technomagick.org
* Port: 6667, 7000 (SSL)
* Channel: #fife

A few days after the birthday party I'll write a little sum-up for the developer blog. There are rumors that quite some devs will be around and that prolly means we can announce this or that ;-)
