I am ... pretty shocked by this.

That no one has mentioned so far probably one of the most influental tracks of SNES history.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=226lyvZmNB8

Secret of Mana of course!

Why? Well it won countless awards and the composer Hiroki Kikuta really mastered the 16 bit tone of the SNES.

I think its a bit sad that modern games somehow lose this feeling though as everything is now either orchestral, classic or done with digital machines that offer a lot more then 16 bit. Not saying that there is anything wrong with that! But those old SNES games had simply their own charm. The Sound too. Its like looking at this really old pictures which have their own style. Simply timeless.

Almost anything by Falcom Sound Team JDK tends to be great.

Generally, I'm not a fan of the alert music in Metal Gear, but I've taken quite a liking to this one. MG in general has good music.

I highly recommend checking out the Nier OST. One of the best in recent years.

RE: R for best RE OST hands down, no contest. Wipes the floor with RE5, and 6.

And of course, can't post this without some SNES goodness.

No comments necessary. The game, the music, the atmosphere.

Could really post any song from Mega Man 2, they're all gold. But this one really got stuck with me when I was about 8-9 years old and has been in my head ever since.
[spoiler:560587eb8d][/spoiler:560587eb8d]

This bit still makes me almost teary eyed from nostalgia.

I was always a sucker for tribal music. Made the games immensely better.

I also wish I could find one song from the first Disciples game, which was one of the most beautiful game themes I've heard.

Much as I appreciate the link to Doom E1M1, I prefer this one:

=)

Also, I was reminded of what I loved about Nier when I saw the Nier OST track that was listed. As bad as the gameplay was, that game was atmospheric and emotion-evoking as fuck. And this was one of my favs:

Even epic Boss Fights would bring you to tears (both with the soft and saddening music, as well as the context of what was so tragic about each boss). Good game.

Some more.

Mass Effect had great music. Loved the 80's vibe it had to it.

Deus Ex. One of the best. Both game and music.

And of course FF7, where the music made half the game.

Perhaps not quite what you fellas are looking for, but last week I played a pretty decent freeware adventure game called Mad Father that I felt made an excellent all-around use of media (graphics, sound effects, and music). In fact I've been listening to the music tracks frequently all week, so perhaps others will enjoy these as well. The linked page to the game itself also includes a section further down regarding the music.
