General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

I'm also keeping my eye on that mod, but I think it will be quite a long time still before it gets released.
Well supposedly the content implementation is pretty much done, and it's just finishing up the translations and the major bugs. Of course, who knows how long it'll take to quash the bugs. I don't hold it against them though... it's really admirable the way they've taken it upon themselves to make a "mod" like this. I just can't wait to play KotOR2 with the restored content.

I've been playing the "Command and Conquer First Decade" game pack for over a month now. In the past I played through C&C 1 as GDI and RA 1 as the Allies, but never played the "evil" faction or tried C&C Tiberian Sun or RA 2. Heard they were great and boy where people right.

I went back and played both campaigns for C&C 1 and RA 1. Sadly I didn't finish the NOD campaign as one of the missions is impossible. Keep in mind I love RTS and C&C so I tried it a dozen times and can't finish. Red Alert was easier with the soviets than the allies I found since you have less, but stronger units.

I'll never forget C&C Tiberian Sun. It's probably equal to me as the best RTS of all time arguing with Starcraft and Warcraft 3. Tiberian Sun is just as great as the original, but with more units, awesomely detailed graphics and sound, but two unexpected things that stand out. First of all the detailed graphics, ambient music, and the post-apocalyptic setting (world transformed and dying from tiberium) blows my mind. I love looking over the maps. Second are the missions. In all the RTS I've ever played never have I had a great variety of missions that are unique. In other RTS the missions are either "make your base" or "command an elite squad" while you also "remove the enemy base" or "capture this structure". Tiberium Sun both blow the lid off of those missions (Warcraft 3 also has awesome missions, but that's another thread). I'll NEVER forget the mission from Tiberium Sun where you have to quell the civilan riot (GDI) or the mission where you have to retrieve part of the tacitus in a remote area of the world that's supposed to be completely devoid of native inhabitants and only populated with mutated lifeforms (also a GDI mission).

I'm now playing the Soviet campaign for RA 2. I really like the game for all the right reasons (detailed graphics, unique setting, good voice acting, skirmishg, etc.), but there is one serious flaw. The Allies GI is way imbalanced in being too powerful. Sure he's the weakest unit, but he's so cheap you can build many more. When you take into account the increased stats they get from deploying and the fast rate they gain combat experience you can not only beat much more advanced units with a small squad, but easily mass them due to their small size and short build time. It made the campaign very easy to win as the Allies, but I don't think I'll dare try RA 2 in multiplayer with such easy exploits.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Installing Neverwinter Nights 2 just now. What do you guys think about this game? Anything i should know before i play it? The graphics look pretty good, and from what i gather, it was recieved better then NwN 1.

Also, should i get Mask of the Betrayer first, before i play?

Neverwinter Nights 2 is imo way, way better than NWN1, but that isn't really saying much in terms of the game itself. I didn't like Act 1 of NWN2 very much, but I thought it was decent in Act 2 and Act 3.

I think MotB is an excellent game though. The best RPG I've played in quite a long time. An excellent story with some great writing and roleplaying. Absolutely the best game in the NWN franchise, and very good in its own right as well.
I believe Vault Dweller over the RPG Codex will be writing a review of this soon, so you might wanna keep an eye on that.

Try the NWN2 OC first and see how you feel about it. If you think it's enjoyable, then there is a lot of game for you there (it's a long campaign). Make sure to patch the game first though.

finally got around to playing HL2: EP1 & EP2.

i wouldnt pay 30 euros for it tbh. but luckily it came in ze Orange Box with Portal & TF2 (and an HL2 i can donate to someone), so it's ok.

C&C games aged very badly, unlike Warcraft, Dark Reign 1 and Ground Control.
I still like C&C:TS graphics, music and movies. On the other hand I never liked it's gameplay.

Got some new hardware so I'm replaying a bunch of Tom Clancy games:

Splinter Cell: Double Agent - Much better on a better PC but still not nearly as good as Chaos Thoery.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2: Never got to finish it so I'm replaying it from the beginning. It's not as good as it seems to or should be, if that makes sense.

Rainbow Six - Vegas - On my tenth or so play through and first on the new rig I'm realizing just how god awful it is. The bloom only hides a butt-ugly game and it's too short and too gimmicky. And it's about as tactical as Doom.

Also, Stranglehold - Very mindless and shallow and not nearly as good as Max Payne. But, y'know, you get to pump bullets into bad guys and blow shit up.

Well. When Medal of Honor came out, I didn't have the hardware to run it.

So I'm playing Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.

Just finished Psychonauts.

Re-played Full Throttle.

Medieval 2: Kingdoms

Unfortunatedly, I only had the chance to buy a god-awful Polish translation of an already god-awful game. It's so linear it hurts.

Well, yes, it's not as miserable as NWN1, but pretty far off a decent game. And if you got the Poilsh version, you might as well throw the thing away.

I've NEVER seen such a bad translation on a game. Well, maybe except Zero Wing.

Luckily, the version i have is imported, 100% english. The Dungeon Siege'esque beginning is putting me a little off, but i'm willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt.

Combat is pretty nice, but dialogues could be better, i expected something more sophisticated. :/ I guess the game will start being less of a hack & slash and more of an RPG once i get to Neverwinter.

You'll have to wait further than that I'm afraid. Pretty much all of Act 1 is very combat-heavy. First time playing the game, I quit the game during a particularly boring dungeon crawl.

That said, I really do think it gets better in Act 2. I wasn't surprised to see during the Credits that different people worked on different acts. The entire game is combat-heavy, but after Act 2 the game does a much better job at pacing. The story gets going, and the combat/NPC interactions get much more balanced.

The dialogues are never 'amazing', but that said there is some really nice writing here and there. And underneath the boring and cliché story premise, there are some nice plot elements.

But yes, if you make it through the game (and I'd argue even if you don't), then don't write off MotB. It's very different than the NWN2 OC in terms of quality. Much, much better in pretty much every regard.

Currently I am playing Shadowrun. The one for SNES. One of my favorites.

Also getting back into GTA 1 for some reason.

Maybe some classic Ogre Battle.

If i understand everything correctly, MotB picks up where NwN 2 finishes off.

Bah. Well, i'll chew through it nevertheless, i have a really big need to play some d&d based game.

edit:// Btw, i forgot to say something - never before, except in the case of Fallout 2, have i underestimated just how buggy and unoptimized an unpached game may be.

My PC is a little sub-par, but NwN 2 was lagging like hell, much to my surprise. Also, i was stumbling upon a bug every few minutes, so i decided to apply all the patches. The game now runs smooth as shit.

I hate it when i have to patch a game to make it run good. :X

I played HL2 Episode 2, but I've quit it because of Q3 multiplayer. Baaad. Quake's a drug...

Oh, I forgot to add that the game is almost as badly programmed as Gothic 3.

I can't say I agree with that. :p

NWN2 still has some performance issues, but the patches really helped (especially the latest one). Shadows and water effects can still bring most systems down though I think.

Gothic 3 on the other end tended to run like shit whatever the hell I did to it. Those long "pauses" when running around almost killed the game for me.

I dug up Interplay's "Neuromancer" from some ancient vault yesterday and got seriously addicted to it. Must...find...better...warez...

Other than that, one of these days I'll go buy the new Football Manager game...
