General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

My first playthrough of Arcanum(!). Started off as a mage/warrior, but found it became too fantasy-esque. Playing as a Technologist now (currently lvl 30), more interesting, though it is a bit tougher.

Great game. However, I cannot help thinking how much better it could have been had it used a modified version of SPECIAL, especially with skills. The combat is abhorent: sometimes you need turn-based tactics to defeat a stronger foe (a good thing), whilst at others times its best to run berserk in circles, chased by critters, whilst your companions, unaffected, finish them off (decidedly a bad thing).

It is, according to me and my current progress, not a better game than Fallout (either one). I can overlook the hectic combat, and the "awkward" character system (though that's admitedly a personal thing, and the more I play the more I like- or rather don't mind it), but the biggest thorn in my foot is the basic game structure, how its propelled by the main quest. The side quests have the feeling of being very minor and relatviely inconsequential, just a means of gaining exp. Go fetch/find/steal/deliver/defeat etc. that thing. In Fallout it was all better distributed (I think), the water chip or the GECK were just one of the many things to do, of course the most imporatant, but something to keep in the back of your mind. The world was far more complex and in that way more realisitic, less like a game-game, it was more believable. A very "immersive experience".

One last gripe with Arcanum are the horrible(!) character models (mainly the clothed ones). They look as if they were made of plastic or rubber, slowly melting under the sun (The Half-Ogres?! They look like cross eyed retard aliens!). A real step down from the older Fallout, not to mention their animations. Other than that most of the graphics are okay, but are more bland and unispired than Fallout, though that might have to do with the, arguably, less interesting setting (but, hey, its hard to beat a post nuclear 50's retro-futurisic world).

Arcanum its a good game nontheless, even great, but not nearly as phenomenal as Fallouts 1 and 2.

I’m in a gaming rot; I played the fuck out of VTMB, Hitman, Arcanum and FO. I don’t feel like replaying STALKER, Oblivion or Bioshock. I even tired the 10 day trail of WOW. I’m looking at what people are playing and the best thing I see that I haven’t played at least 10 times through is Shadowrun. I want something fairly recent for the PC I’m thinking Mass Effect or Witcher but I’ll take anything that is enjoyable and take me at lest three days to finish, please help.

I felt the same way, online coop gaming is the cure.

Gears of War (Best coop campaign ever) and Rainbow Six : Vegas 2 both let you play through the campaign with two players online, and will most definitely last you more than three hours (especially on the hardest difficulties, which are incredibly fun).

You could also download http://synergymod.net/ and play through the Half Life 2 + Episode 1 campaigns with multiple friends online (also fun).

If you've got a high-end system, you should pick up mass effect (just ordered it from newegg, thanks for reminding me it was released ).

Holy Christ I'm playing Rock Band.

....someone kill me please. Not really but it's like masturbating with a cheese grater. Fun at first but then you get open wounds and grind the nerve endings outta the head.

Wait... WHAT!?

I"m playing Haze.

It has it's problems, but it's quite apt at being the perfect murder simulator if your prey of choice is either frat boys or online FPS fans.

Maybe that's why all the major reviewers hate it...

Mainly I switch between Oblivion, Medieval II Total War and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but I have Tron I'm slowly going through again, and I'm laboring through Bioshock...spiritual successor to System Shock my left nut.

Ninja Gaiden II.

My fingers hurt from all the dismembering I have to do.

Though of particular hilarity, enemies become even more dangerous when crippled than when they're healthy.

Playing Mass Effect, trying out Oblivious for the first time, and yelling at my monitor while I play COD4. I fucking hate COD4.

just finished fallout 2 again as an unarmed and big guns specialist, and just downloaded assassin's creed on the pc. debating even going back to AC, though, considering the atrocious horse riding that you are forced to do at a walking pace.

I'm about to try out Evochron Renegades. It's supposed to be a freeform space exploration and trading game, Elite style. A huge number of planets, all of which you can land on. Let's see if it lives up to its name. It'd be awesome to have something modern that plays like Frontier: First Encounters, which is one of my all-time favourites.

EDIT: Nah, it's not what I expected. No realistic star systems, no time compression, no autopilot, an extremely retarded navigation console. Gate travel sucks. Finding a city to land at on a planet sometimes takes quite a while. And I wouldn't be surprised if there's just one city on every planet. Oh well, back to waiting for Elite 4.

Have you tried the X series games? X-2: The Threat and X-3: Reunion? I started with X-2 and it was a blast, very very good...but X-3 came out a few years ago and it's one of the few games that has managed to stay on my computer since it first came out. It was a little unstable at first, but it's been patched very nicely, they even have a free(small) expansion available for download, and the user community is very active in putting out new scripts and content/mods.

Ugh, don't mention the X series. It's even worse: space travel is like being in a little can of sardines that is linked by a tube to the next one and you can't even land on planets. Why would you even recommend it when I mentioned that I want something like the Elite series? Try Frontier: First Encounters for a feel of true freedom in space.

Fuck that, it isn't Hitman, just gallop that bitch, won't effect your ratings or anything.

ya, that was a nice game

kicked shodan's rear end again. still one of the greatest games ever.

i want to play descent again. anybody recall that game? it was a blast at that time. my first computer upgrade was bought when doom was published (upgrade to 486 and ram), the second one (upgrade to pentium, iirc) when descent came out. i look forward to the knots in my fingers

while browsing i discovered that there is a 3rd descent with real 3d accelerated graphics! yay! i really liked descent2, but playing 640/480 on high resolution tft's isnt that great at all (diablo 1 looks HORRIBLE)

it just makes every guard scream "kill him!" and rush after after you with swords and arrows. makes you wonder why they even bothered, your walking speed is faster than the horse and you're less suspicious when you're running around the countryside on foot, somehow.
