General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

been playing a bit of S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky lately. good game, I love the improvements over the first game. I love how hard it is to find anomalies, I love how you can upgrade and repair weapons and armor etc. and I love the idea of the tactical gameplay. unfortunately it's very lacking and unstable. many times I've driven off the last bandits for example, then 5 sec a whole bunch of them respawn and I realize I just wasted lots of expensive ammo for basically nothing. I also thought there was supposed to be some sort of squad-based combat, but that's nowhere to be seen. when people are supposed to help me, most of the time they just stand there and do nothing.

this is a classic case of both games being great, but unfortunately not great enough on their own. I so miss the missions and atmosphere from the first game, but I couldn't play it now what with all the improvements in Clear Sky...

Evil Genius primarily, thanks to Woozie, who recommended it.

Staging to replay Gears of War, need to finish Clear Sky for the second time.

Ehehe, I played that game by reccomendation from Wooz too, one day.

It's a fun game, but it gets on yer nerves in the laters levels. It takes way, waaay too long to get anywhere...

I'm an OCDgamer who loves Dungeon Keeper - like games, so...

Also, I love the attention to detail in Gears of War, a shame that it's just a shooter. Steampunk environments FTW.

Right now, replaying arcanum, my 360 is collecting massive amounts of dust. I'm ironically, picking up a copy of fable 2. Dumb entertainment, but co op looks to be somewhat fun. Horrible framerate though.

I agree with Mikael on gears backgrounds being quite detailed, artistically speaking, a lot of these new games actually have quite lovely enviroments. The problem is filling these enviroments.

Been recently playing Earthbound on and off.

Haven't been playing much really. Working on Knights of the Old Republic (going dark this time) on my Xbox.

Then there's also the fact that Gears is a TPS, not an FPS, making appreciating the detail hard.

Also, is it me, or was E-Day on 11th September 2001 on Sera?

Right now... Final Fantasy XII (opinion: decent mechanics for a jrpg, better story, world seemed to be planned out better, but there is still too much excessive grinding)

Far Cry 2

It's freaking awesome, and shits all over crysis' face on the performance to prettiness chart.
Oh god, yes. Shoddy scavenged guns blowing up in your face, having to rip bullets and shrapnel out of your flesh to stop from dying, coping with malaria, driving around and stirring shit up in a volatile environment.

Getting chased by wildebeest.

I... I think I love it when things go horribly, horribly wrong. This game is a wet dream.

I hear FC2 is a bugged piece of shit. Many people can't even get it to run, it just crashes. Also, there are rumors that Ubisoft won't be patching the bugs. I suggest you put your money elsewhere.

well, that sucks. why the hell would they not patch it though? if they don't, I'm pretty sure their reputation is doomed for ever.

I haven't had any trouble, but maybe it does have Crashalotitis for some people or certain system configurations. As for the rumors that Ubisoft won't patch it, rumors are rumors and it doesn't make any business sense. And, yeah, you will want a pretty beefy computer, but the updated engine seems to scale a lot better than it did with Crysis.

If you're unsure, wait on it and read more. I doubt the game is going to suddenly disappear or something.

Syndicate - I killed a whole town today. 155 civilians and 34 cops. I find sniping civilians with LR Rifle and burning them with Flamethrower very relaxing :) .

yeah, I'm not in a hurry to get it. I'll just wait to see if any patches are released.

my system can run Crysis well on pretty high settings. but I'm starting to see drops in performance in newer games - STALKER: Clear Sky for example. I have to run that game with pretty low quality to have good framerate.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky is pretty horrifically unoptimized, so I wouldn't worry about that one in particular.

And where did you hear that? ~8 hours in and it runs smooth as can be. Haven't encountered a single crash/bug, but then again, I know how to maintain my rig.

You're not the only one that can maintain your rig. Yet look at the problems people are complaining about at the FC2 technical forum.

A friend of mine couldn't get the thing to run on XP. The game just restarted the system during loading, which a number of people are experiencing. He installed Vista, and lo and behold - the game ran. Except there was abnormal stutter in dx10 mode, which completely went away in dx9. Which is another problem that people complain about in the forum. His comp is up to date and should be able to run it in dx10 with max settings. Go figure.
