Good , neutral, or Evil.

I always made a selfish, greedy, opportunistic character in Fallout 03.

Maybe it was the anarchy and chaos of The Capital Wastes that inspired it, I don't know.

That said, the game branded me as evil but I did the odd good thing here and there, like not blowing up Megaton, don't see the point of destroying one of the two major settlements in the wasteland and I didn't go around murdering people for the mere sake of it.

I only cared about Karma in regards to achievements and to be honest, I can't be bothered playing the game for the sake of getting the level 20 and 30 karma related achievements, I ain't that much of an achievement whore.

How much of a dick am I for selling the child in little lamplight into slavery?

Always evil. The karma system needs a fix in Fallout 3 in my opinion however. If you commit genocide by blowing up Megaton and becoming a demon, you can literally have your 'sins' cleansed by giving water to a homeless man, what the hell? And also the fact that if you did the right choice and saved the town, you live in a crappy shack above a restaurant and don't get as much money, blow it up and you get a lot more money and you live in a luxury hotel and even more money if you kill the ghouls trying to get in. I always know which one to pick.

I usually shoot for Neutral to play both sides. It is always fun to react to the conversations like you would in real life.

Evil seems to be the best choice, unless you believe in-game actions effect those in real life. I personally have never really played evil or neutral, but I keep meaning to.

karma in games is really naive and limited at best

witcher and witcher 2 have really taken C&C to the next level the same way fallout did in 1997

what always bugs me about beth games is that choices dont really change anything

and i hate their credo of allowing you to do evertything in 1 paythru

my last 3 rpgs have been skyrim, deus ex hr and witcher 2

all 3 are as good as new vegas- much better than fallout 3

i think witcher 2 sets a new standard in rpg gaming- a watershed moment like fallout 1/planescape torement

I rarely play good. I usually go for neutral and some times evil. Right now Im playing a slave hunter so im riding on the evil side.

Why not just play as an evil guy, blow up Megaton, enslave people, then simply donate some blood money to the Rivet City Church every once in a while and your sins are cleansed! :)

i use console commands so much w FO3, karma means nothing to me anymore.
but i prefer to stay on neutral cus it keeps the damn assasin squads away.

i really dislike the unnatural approach to good/evil/neutral, in dialogue each answer is so obviously good evil or neutral, and the response you get is also too obviously a comment on your choise
"oh, you are the more neutral kind of person, are you!"
"that was a rather evil reply!"
"you. are. a. good. person."

I preferred being Neutral. It gave you much more of a choice and far less enemies. If you were good, Talon Mercs came after you. If you were evil, Regulators came after you. You could pretty much do any quest and as long as you balanced it out it didn't make much difference to anything. Well, ANYTHING, being not you.

You could take the contract killer perk and the law bringer perk so if you thought that you were getting to much good karma, kill a guy, cut off his ear and sell it to Little Horn. Or if you were getting to much evil karma, kill a guy, cut off his finger and sell it to the Regulators.

Neither.
The Karma system is fucking horrible, and they should not have made it a major part of the game.

But at least it works, as opposed to Fallout "Slaughter an entire family and get nothing, but kill a feral ghoul and you're a Hero" New Vegas.

*Disclaimer: I love FONV, its just that their karma flags don't work that well, and its bloody hard to be evil without becoming the world's greatest kleptomaniac.

If I had to choose though...I would say good I guess. But only because of the loot the Talon mercs drop. Which I guess proves that Bethesda is trying to make you into a good guy :?

It's argued that killing feral ghouls rewards good karma because you're ending their suffering of being a mindless zombie, giving them a chance to requiescat in pace, ect.

Oh, I'm not arguing against that. I'm arguing against the fact that there is no balance. Every single one of my characters in FNV have been good, not because I made them like that, but because I didn't have a choice in the matter, as no one you can kill en masse gives you evil karma.

At least in FO3 if you kill a few peasants you get a hit to your karma. And even then there's paradise falls.
In FONV its much harder, as the karma flags on the NPCs are dodgey and there aren't that many "evil" quests that are actually worth doing.

Hence my calling it:

Fallout "Slaughter an entire family and get nothing, but kill a feral ghoul and you're a Hero" New Vegas.

I've killed tons of people and traders, and yet I still had angelic karma just because I shot some stupid ass ghoul who got in my way.

Yeah it's true it's hard to get evil karma in the game. But then again, I don't really care about being a 'bad guy' in New Vegas. I like being a good guy. At least with the PC you can do mods for karma I guess, except I play on the 360.
