Gothic 3 Gone Gold.

Hmmm, that can't (or at least shouldn't) be right. That's really a shitload of memory.

Eh, I think I'll go finish Gothic 2: Night Of The Raven first so that I'm up to date on the storyline.

I never finished Gothic I either, I felt that the endgame was really lacking. Ah well.

Erm. Are you supposed to have 6 'svchost.exe' processes running at the same time?

Depending on what programs you are running, yes. Svchost is a really poor idea, though, since you can never actually see which process it is running.

Anyway, svchost is the Windows service host, it generally runs Windows services when other programs request it. Some of the processes are essential to Windows and some aren't, but there's almost no telling which one is doing what.

I hope future versions of Windows get rid of it along with the retarded rundll32.exe concept.

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting G3 but I loathe long loads.

- quest system could use a tune-up (for clarity, better questdescriptions & locations)

So could the quests in the other two Gothic games.

- combat system needs tweaking (especially vs wildlife when being higher level)

Well, Gothic's combat system has always been criticized, so this is hardly anything new.

- AI shouldve been a bit brighter (as an archer you can pick them off, retreat, reset & repeat)

Could also be done in the first two games, though not with every critter.

- inventory management is teh weird (infinite space & weight? wtf?)

Has always been like that. What, haven't you played the other Gothic games?

- game runs kinda heavy (they couldve left out some useless eyecandy)

The Gothic games have always been resource hogs around the time they're released.

- there are endless amounts of (useless) herbs everywhere (oblivionstyle: wtf is that about?)

Maybe you just haven't found a use for them yet.

- most of the time you need to visit trainers to level any skills, which is a drag (there are the odd quest that raise some skills, but they are rare)

Nothing new here; this is how it has always been in Gothic.

- loading time is pretty bad

Aren't they always?

I love the Gothic games, but from what I'm hearing of this one, I'll steer clear until the majority of bugs have been squashed. Maybe I'll even wait for the expansion pack, too.

I find it a bit strange, that not a single woman have had anything to say. Is it a part of the setting?

Well, that has been always a part of Gothic

Women always got the real task to do... cooking, cleaning, selling stuff on the marketplace and being prostitutes...

just because it was like that in 1 & 2 doesnt mean i have to like it or neglect commenting on it.

as for the herbs: different herb combos give the same results (hp pots can be crafted with various mixes for instance). however those add really nothing to the game at all. how does 'healing root' and 'healing plant' add anything? they do the same thing and require the same stuff to craft hp pots.

I think you are wrong there. In Gothic II there are three different kinds of healing herbs, for brewing three different healing potions of varying potency. In addition to this, healing root is also needed for Elixir of Life, which gives a permanent boost to maximum health. The same should hold true for Gothic III, unless Piranha Bytes decided to dumb down the alchemy system for some reason.

we'll see. up til now all most combos have the same result, which kinda sucks.

since both make exactly the same lower level pot, you could just double the amount of herb one, remove herb two and up the herb requirement for that elixir instead. little would change.

either way as i said in my original post: the amount of herbs you find is kinda moronic (the good herbs are of course rare, like the permanent stat increase herbs). but it really feels as if they added shitloads of herbs for 3 reasons: 1) visual appeal, 2) a fake feeling diversity and 3) lengthening the game by having you pick plants for hours.

I don't know, sounds like you're just looking for something to complain about. I think the variety of plant life in Gothic I and II was a nice touch, and I think most other people feel the same. Unless the game is forcing you to spend hours scouring the world for herbs then I don't see the problem; on the contrary, it's exactly the type of minor, game enhancing detail that most other games completely ignore and that makes the Gothic games feel like some care and effort went into them.

Like picking up arrows from an old fight location...one...arrow...at...a...time! :D

It might seem tedius, but you're also scavenging, so there's an invested cost there. The same with flower picking.

Gothic 2 is pretty easy in most places when you can run or jump up to a point, drink a potion or two, and then cake the rest of the fight. As long as you have enough of the supplies. Which means, you get the idea...

As for the system requirements of Gothic III, keep in mind that Origin often had extreme spec requirements for the time for their titles. It was pretty much the only way they could cram everything in to be presented together.

Frankly, I'd rather have a game I can tweak my hardware and my system could "grow into", but was an excellent game, than a game that my system can play but I wouldn't care to play. Some roughness is to be expected with a game otherwise so competently put together, but it is usually ironed out by either the devs or the community, as bugs are fixable - shitty design is more memorable.

think what you like. just stating the stuff that bothers me.

anyhow, got a whole list but cba to type it out right now. but dont misunderstand: all my whining aside, it's still a great game.

only missed arrows can be picked up i think.

either way, it doesnt matter much. at the moment i'm lugging around 800 arrows and 1000 crossbow bolts. i'm not likely to bother with searching for missed arrows. :)

i think i'm doing quite well for a 'scavenger' considering i got more than enough money to buy the most expensive armors, yet i'm not allowed to due to reputation constraints. (semi-spoiler for rebels: funny how you basically secure the capital by killing all orcs there, recapture and free a great number of cities, yet you aren't good enough to buy decent armor ^^ )

on a side note, a little tip for people that just start playing: dont bother with shields. they're a useless investment in training points.

Anyhow, here are my gripes with Gothic 3 up til now (haven't finished it yet, but for all clarity, I like the game, but that doesn't keep me from being frustrated) :

- Quests: Most quests don't have multiple ways of finishing them. Either you do them, or you don't.

- Dialog trees: Or lack thereof. The dialog is not quite yet at an Oblivion moron level, but it gets close. Luckily it has some content, but the dumbed down feel and lack of actual options are depressing. The only dialog options in which you can actually force a reaction out of NPCs are purely questbased.

- Combat imbalances:
* Wildlife: It's as if wildlife is so imbalanced, just to make the Hunting skills more attractive and no other reason. Yet in doing that, a handful of Rangers that can't defend themselves from two angry boars. Or the player can pull 2x 3 Wargs (kind of wolves) into the orc camp at Gotha and you get about 10 orcs killed before they slay the beasts.
* Kiting: you can basically kill almost everything ingame, by kiting it around with a bow (a crossbow usually does more damage, but it's difficult to kite with). Some kite kills will take over 15 arrows; even when you're a master archer. Hell, you can kite an entire city guard (saving Montera anyone? the rebel script fails to fire half the time leaving you to kill approximately 50+ guards pretty much by yourself.).
* Several useless skills: Shield? Hah, don't make me laugh. It's only useful in 1o1 and even then it's less effective than a simple quick engagement.
* Targetting: If you have a neutral target in front of you, and a hostile one, you can bet your ass the game will automatically target the neutral one...

- Aggro management: "Friends" (not party members) will often aggro when you use your weapon close to them, even if it's to kill one of their enemies. For instance, in the capital, I shot several times at orcs camped near the temple, the rebel guards ran out and tried to kill me, as I was wholesale slaughtering their enemies. Funny how I can kick the Orc city leader's ass but the guards won't bother me until I actually kill him once he's on the ground unconcious. Yet I can't kick an enemies ass, without aggroing my allies?

- Light: Often in caves, you can go from perfectly lit, to pitchblack. Take a step back and you'll see perfectly (including the supposed pitchblack area). This is very frustrating.

- Party: All party members seem to be suicidal maniacs. Now that's fine when it's a paladin with armor that has +100 protection to the whole lots of effects, however, seeing a frail hunter rush into a pack of wolves only trying to draw a weapon once he's already being attacked (which means he'll be hit about 5 times before he actually gets a weapon out). He simply could've drawn his bow, him supposedly being a master Archer and a wolf hunting specialist, ye know?

- NPC Death: Often in a fight, neutral NPCs won't die when you strike them down. They'll simply lie on the ground, regaining HP and will wake up later. Or you can decide to give them a coup de grace. Now it's nice to be able to choose, but the way you can see a guy is dead or regaining HP is through his health bar. However, the healthbar of a dead NPC often bugs and displays some health anyway. Quite frankly, it makes trying to kill neutral NPCs a rather painful affair.

- Reputation: Saving a slave ups your general Rebel reputation by one. Freeing an entire city ups your rep by one (usually). Funny no? I don't quite see why you can't buy a certain 'heavy' armor after freeing 4 cities, saving the king (or at least saving his city), and so on. Funny how you can be totally revered and loved in a city (that you freed), but the seller will tell you he can't sell you the item because you haven't proven yourself enough.

- Weather: Weather resets after quiting the game. You save on a bright sunny day and load in a fog bank once you restart the game. Now that usually aint a prob, but it's a bitch if you want to do some sniping.

- Naming / Translation: Strength & Hunting as main stats? What's wrong with Dexterity or Agility? Some stuff is just odd. The name in the console for the stat is "DEX" btw, but they changed it to "Hunting" for some odd reason. There are plenty of other examples.

- Still the huge lack of women (Typical for Gothic): Did the orcs murder 98% of the female populace to stop Morra breeding?

- Unfinished modeling: There are quite a lot of unfinished areas with trees hovering in midair & such. You can easily jump up to them aspecially if you have the acrobatics perk.

To be honest, it smells suspiciously like Gothic II. What's especially funny is that engine problems such as theweird issue with lighting were present in Gothic II, and Gothic III supposedly has a new engine.

I played Gothic 3 and I have to say that i'm rather disapointed.
I feels like the game isn't finished yet. Like SuAside said, there are to many bugs.

The thing that bothers me the most is the dumb AI. It feels like its worse then gothic I and II. And the new voices....arrrgh.

I really hope that they release some patches...

I only played the game ~30 sec and i could almost tell how mutch it seemed to suck :D

There was something wrong with the intro, lagged like hell.

The lightning effects was really fucked up.

And wtf is up with the attack animation, felt really lame.

Im will give it one more try of course, but i can often tell if a game is good or bad in a matter of minutes.

Seems to be as over hyped as Oblivion.

If you gonna hype you better deliver!! Im getting seriously pissed by all hypes...

the game does get better with time keyser Soeze, once you understand better how stuff works. (the manual isn't much help though, forgot to mention that: flimsy ass manual that explains only the obvious, not the deeper stuff. what exactly do the advanced grades of swordsmanship do? what do the archer ranks do? what is the difference between dual wield ranks? no one knows until they try... the only useful thing the manual tells you is how to kill an neutral character that is down, but not dead).

and Ratty, yeah it smells of G2, but i was hoping they fixed their previous issues and added some features and depth. however i've got a feeling G2 was better (although that's not really objective). i think they've dumbed down quite a lot of stuff, except they've forgotten to make the beginner area easy and clear. i think a lot of oblivion kiddies will drop the game because of it, no matter the ammount of dumbed down content to suit their hand. it's also kind of sad that the game pushes you towards the rebels, rather than giving you an open choice. (it feels as if the 'join the orcs' option is only there to allow you to dismantle the orcs from inside out in the begin areas. this luckily fades later on in the game, where you see deeper questlines for orc lovers.)

still, i like it, i must admit. but it's not the RPG i was hoping for.

Some people at the TES Fora sure are happy that the game allowed them to point so many flaws at it.

"Crap combat, crap gr4phix, crap performance! Over-hyped crap game. 'Oblivion-Killer' my ass!".

"The Gothic series is sexist! All women in it are portrayed as prostitutes or slaves! I can't stand misogynists so I hate the game!"

"The looting system sucks! I entered a cave and killed everyone, opened the chest, and in it were 3 spell scrolls and 2 potions! No Armor, no enchanted weapons, no Unique items!"

"I can't customize my own character so it is not an RPG!!!1. I'm playing THEIR character, not mine!"

And the list of quotes goes on and on.
