Gripes about the writing

I have very little hope for the gaming industry these days. I'm far more interested in things coming out of smaller, indie groups and mod teams than the big-name gaming companies. Just take a look at Shelter. That's magnitudes better looking than FO3 and they're in pre-alpha, or thereabouts?

I really hope for a return to shareware days with indie studios making the games that the real gamers want to play, while the kids can play Gorefest 7 (With DLC and Achievements!)

Also, I say kids, but the depressing thing is many of them aren't kids. I once shared a house, briefly, with a guy only maybe 3 years younger than me, who thought Halo was the shit, and even liked FOPOS *shudder*

Exactly how old are you again? There's a very fine line between the end of the gamers era and the beginning of this garbage we have today.

Well, I was 13 when FO1 came out. Still young by many standards, but I certainly feel old looking around the internet today.

(And for reference, this house sharing episode was earlier this year)

I'm 22 and started gaming when I was 4. I consider myself to be on the trailing edge of the glory days of gaming. You'll notice people just a couple years younger than us really have no clue what a decent video game is. Of course there are exceptions, but by and large, it is what it is.

The scary part is the average gamer is in his 30s now. I begin to wonder if it's not so much that the new kids don't want to use their brains while playing as much as it's older people who don't have the time or motivation to become sucked in by a gaming universe. From there it just becomes a cycle. The older gamers don't want to commit to a game that is going to take too much of their time and the younger gamers want something new every year or less. For instance, in March 2007 I was playing Gears of War on XBL -- yes, I know, failocaust -- and some 15 year old kid is telling me how old Gears is...At the time it had been out for 5 months.

Anyway, all we can do is keep supporting indy projects, but I have to say, I'm losing my faith in the whole thing. Interplay folded, Troika folded, I expect InXile won't last long enough to launch Wasteland 2...

What killed it for me was:
Me: Tell me, what was my mother like?
Doctor Li: Your mother was.. a scientist. A good one. And your father loved her very much.
Me: Thank you for that information, can I ask you another question/I have to go now

...

People who are interested in FPS games will obviously regard FPS games as being the best, no? Just like you regard <insert> as being the best, he will regard Halo (his favourite FPS game) as the best.

What's wrong with that?

Because Halo is pisseasy, has a bad story and only somebody who thinks consoles are great (and I consider FPS to be pc only) would enjoy it. Picked up GoW some time a go. What a joke.

Yeah but that's just your opinion innit? You mentioned age, my mate, whose 35 and married, regards Gears of War as his favourite game, followed by GoW2. Why? Cause it's a fucking fun game (for him), and the purpose of games are to deliver entertainment. Anyway, what's with the "who thinks consoles are great" bit? Last time I saw you write "I call them console games", as if they're somehow inferior because they're non-PC.

GoW is a joke indeed, fun for a while, then the repetitive nature of it takes over, the stupid 'shoot the final badguy in the foot while he's hopping on one leg in 0.3s to take off 10% off his health' was particularly antique.

Fallout 3 had one redeeming quality: The final battle wasn't so annoying.

I didn't play that long I must say. After an hour or so I figured the scripting of the enemies out and after that it was really too easy and just exploiting bad programming.

uhm back to the topic... you gotta admit that Halo3 has better story writing than Fo3.
And gears' charachters have about as much depth as Fo3s`, if not more. (no to mention they are better voiced and 10x better animated)

GoW is off to a good start (Marcus in the prison, then with the hint that he's basically a disgruntled, mentally-ruined soldier with his comment to Carmine onboard the King Raven), but then abandons character development in favour of developing a homoerotic, manly vojage through hordes of Locust.

and thats more backround story and charachters than the blonde BoS chick(Hi! Im Lyons, daughter of my dad Lyons and he is the CEO of Pentagon so I got to lead the squad!) and about as much story and charachters as the bitchy drLee. Both are unkillable "key main story NPCs" :x

ok I picked some of the worst ones. there are interesting charachters in Fo3

what's wrong with the writing?

OH MY LORD!

I will use one example, (of many and repeated problems)

Upon walking to Rivet City, I was presented with my opening speech options.

One of which was "I'm hear to see Dr Li" (or however that was actually written in game"

now as a player, as a character I'd never heard of a Dr Li so i was left wondering WHAT in hell this was about. Several times I have been given speech options regarding knowledge I simply don't have.

So, to answer, without going into nit picking. EVERYTHING is wrong with the writing (dialogue wise)

and in terms of 'story' well, I recently saw something growing in the bottom of an unwashed glass on my kitchen sideboard that had about as much depth as the story for FO3, and was in fact a damn sight more interesting.

Has anyone else gone to Megaton after Raven Rock?

At Raven Rock, Nathan was wondering around talking about how the Enclave isn't who they say they are, etc. Then I went back to Megaton and he was there spouting off "God bless the Enclave" and so on...

confusing...

On that subject: The Enclave in Fo2 was something you learned about very late into the game. Having an NPC spout tirades about them in the early game kind of ruins the element of dread they're supposed to represent. And off the ol' man goes, enclave this, enclave that, that advertises itself across the wasteland. Too... bland.
