Halo: Reach

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Whos getting the new Halo game which of course is Halo: Reach? I know I am, Halo games usually have a good story and are a fun FPS. And this is the last one too.

Yeah CE was the best of the three, or four if you count ODST. And the graphics look really good. Just wish F:NV's Graphics were even close to theirs.

And this is the last one too.

Uh huh, and you believe that.
Microsoft has set up a studio just to develop Halo games and there are already stories Halo 4 is in development.

I have a feeling that the human-Covenant war is going to last for a very long time.
I would not rule out games like Halo: Harvest.

There is some hate for the franchise on these forums because of some of the clichés it has caused, one of them being that Halo 'invented' the FPS genre which is absurd, and of course the rabid fanboys who proclaim it to be the best series ever.
Their example of the storyline does not hold much merit as even Bungie themselves acknowledge that they took most from the 'Starhammer/The Vang' books by Christopher Rowley (which I recommend BTW)

Anyway, I expect to take a look at the game later this week.
Can be nice to play another sci-fi themed FPS again as those are rare these days.

What I am really looking out for is Borderlands' Claptrap's new robot revolution.

Really I've never heard that before. They signed some thing with Activision for ten years to do games for both platforms but if that dosen't work out I can see them coming back to Halo. It deffinitly didn't create the FPS. I don't know what popularized FPS but the first CoD is what hooked me on them. I might've thought about checking that book out but right now I have to read Scarlet Letter for school which is in old English (but not too old) and is pretty boring also the main character is suicidale.

This is the last Halo game that Bungie is working on. Future Halo games will be made but they will be developed by a new, different studio known as 343 industries.

Don't know how I feel about a different studio takign over one of my favorite games I hope it has some of the people from the orginal games in it...oh my god its happening.

It is a studio independent from Bungie that MS has set up.
I know that at least one of the heads of Bungie now runs it, not sure which one though.

Gonna try to find Legendary Edition Thursday (after I get paid.) I'm really not sure why, until last Thursday I had written it off as "Gonna be another generic samey-FPS," which it still looks like it's going to be, but it also has some interesting stuff.

Welcome to the hell of the Fallout fan.

I've never been a big Halo fan... a tad overhyped IMO... and I'm shocked Larry Niven didn't sue the pants off of them.

Off topic, but is that book any good? I only have part 2 (of 4?), for some reason. I read Lucifer's Hammer in one go, though, one of the best books I've ever got my hands on. Not sure how he tackles sci-fi and if it's worth it - should I go out and buy the other parts?

I had a ton of fun playing CE on legendary with my college rommmate. and playing the 2nd on the 2nd hardest solo. It taught me how to enjoy a game on difficult settings.

I get tired of the multiplayer though as I want everything I do to have at least a minuscule effect on the game world.

May get it once my bro brings his 360 back from Uni. Only really like the campaigns though and it's really short in this one.

You mean ' Ringworld' right?
Well the first is the introduction of course and deals with the mystery regarding the Ringworld itself as well as some of the 'recent' history of Known Space. (great for those who are into Niven's general universe and not just Ringworld but perhaps a bit off putting for those who aren't)
Most of the focus is on the mystery of the BDO (big dumb object) and no so much answers.

In comparison I found The Ringworld Engineers somewhat better as we get more into the societies and humanoid species off the Ringworld as well as a threat to the artificial construct which forces the main characters to find the control center in order to fix it.

The Ringworld Throne, well to be honest this is the weakest entry of the series and I unfortunate do not recall every detail of the book.
Most of the first part deals with relations amongst the hominid species of the Ringworld and an alliance to stop a threat of vampires. (these aren't the stereotypical vampires of horror books, no magical powers and that sort of stuff. There are barely any predators on the Ringworld and humanoids have evolved to fit into those places otherwise filled by other creatures. Vampires are barely intelligent humanoids who live of the blood of other humanoids and who excrete powerful pheromones that makes humanoids docile)

Ringworld's Children once again involves various species from Known Space.
Ringworld has become known to the various human and alien governments of Known Space and various worlds have launched expeditions to claim the artificial construct and the secrets on it for themselves.
One of the main characters from the first book seeks to protect the Ringworld from being exploited while at the same time trying to outsmart the Ringworld's new protector.

This last book mainly serves as a resolution to the series.

To be honest, the first two books are stronger than the last two, though Children is better than Throne.

One of the problems I sometimes have with the series is that Niven sometimes solves the contradictions by saying that certain characters lied in previous books.
This can be very annoying.

Huh, thanks for the info - looks a bit 'too sci-fi' for my tastes, but I might grab it for one of those rainy weekends.

Let the discussion steer itself back on topic now (Halo).

Looks interesting but I think i'm going to pass this one up until it drops in price. Halo games have just bored me since Halo 2 was released. I did enjoy Halo: CE when I first had it.
