Happy 15th birthday, Fallout!

Brings a tear to my eye

Though I probably feel more nostalgic for the time NMA celebrated tenth anniversary five years ago than the actual 1997 game's release

I wonder if this game can outlive us...

What do you mean by "outlive us"? Technology moves so fast that it'll probably take quite a lot of work to make Fallout work on a modern machine in say.. 20 years. If it will be possible at all. Then again, someone like Bethesda, or a future own of the franchise might decide to remake it, assuming it would be profitable to do so.

The perceived impact of the game will probably be greater than the perceived impact of a lot of people here, simply because a lot of people don't have an apparent impact on society/reality in general. So, in a way, I expect Fallout to outlive myself.

Makes me wonder, should it outlive us?

I am in that small group of people who feels that remakes often turn an existing idea into something that is lesser than the original than an actual improvement (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica)

Let future generations make new PA games that reflect their ideas and feelings about it rather than changing an existing one to suit it.

A remake wouldn't be necessary (I think Battlestar Galactica is better than the original btw, wonky ending and planning aside, really great acting and character writing, great soundtrack, a good sense of when to use special effects and generally good camerawork, etc.), I was just pointing out something that might or might not happen when Fallout will be even more difficult to play on modern machines.

It might just as well get emulated though.

I know what you mean but remake in my book usually comes down "we change something to reflect our tastes".

Well, even assuming that the old team would go back to work on a remake, we'd be talking about people that are older and different from when they worked on Fallout, and even if they made exactly the game they envisioned again, the very fact that it has different resolution, maybe a different more user-friendly UI, etc. would make the game different for a lot of fans.

So in a way, yeah, a remake is a tall order because it simply can't match the expectations. But I kind of feel we're going OT, so maybe it's better to open a topic on remakes elsewhere :D

Technically, the game will probably outlive us. After all, out of the millions of .exe files all over the globe and the Net, at least one will survive longer than any of current NMA members. But that's not what I meant...

I meant the sheer impact of the game, the core of the franchise and its influence among RPGs and post-apocalyptic genre, will that outlive us? Will in, say, 80 years, some PA or RPG enthusiast put the game on the list of "Best of all", or will a small dedicated (maybe fanatical is a better word) community exist that would play some good old games from another century, and Fallout among them? Will there be a person who'd say (or think) "Happy 100th anniversary, Fallout!".

I personally doubt it, and yes, it goes a bit too far, I know, but it's just a nice thought...

Nice thought? It's like the darkest thing I've read this week.

What the hell is PA? All I know that to mean is Pennsylvania and Penny Arcade. FUCK ACRONYMS.

Anyway:

Maybe,
You'll think of me
When you are all alone

Maybe,
The one who
is waiting for you
Will prove untrue
Then what will you do?

Maybe,
You'll sit and decide
Wishing that I were near

Maybe
You'll ask me
To come back again
and maybe,
I'll say maybe

Maybe,
You'll think of me
When you are all alone
Maybe the one who is waitin for you
Will prove untrue
Then what will I do?

Maybe,
You'll sit inside
Wishing that I were near

Maybe,
You'll ask me
To come back again
And maybe,
I'll say Maybe.

Typing "post-apoc" is so hard. Ouch, my fingers hurt just typing it that one time.
