having issues with factions now.

It Wandered In From the Wastes
i got power armor, and it makes ncr think i am brotherhood. is there no power armor that you can wear that wont have the ncr shooting at you? i also am at the point where i wanna complete all faction quests to the end, but i am doing legion right now and the ncr has started hating me as a result. i was forced into blowing up the hidden valley brotherhood bunker. and it seems at some point you are forced to choose one faction or another.

Are you wearing the "Brotherhood T-45b/T-51b power armor" or the "T-45b/T-51b power armor"? The former is a faction disguise but the latter is not, IIRC.

Also the Remnants power armor, Gannon family power armor, and the Scorched Sierra power armor (requires Lonesome Road) are not faction disguises.

i will check, i didnt notice it. what about the quest stuff? is there a way to do all quests in 1 playthrough or do you have to pick and choose for faction quests at some point?

In some point of the history you have to choose a side; or Mr. House, NCR or The Legion are going to get angry at you. The only one who doesn't bother for your decisions is Yes Man; there's no way to do all the factions's missions, unless you play on PC and there's some way to do it with commands, but that's cheating. You can do some missions, the first ones for example of each group, but in some point you have to choose a side... i always go with Yes Man, and i love to be Vilified by the Legion so i can kill their assassins with expensive equipment, it's fun.

It is possibly to do *nearly* all the quests in one play through, but not possible to do all of them. A lot of quests have two versions, one where you're helping the NCR and one where you're helping the Legion, and you can't do both of those things, so you can't see everything in one playthrough.

New Vegas is a really subtle, well-thought out game though so there's a lot of stuff you won't notice the first time through that you'll pick up on repeat plays (I think I'm up to 13 playthroughs and I'm still noticing things) so it's not like playing it again ought to be a drag.

ok. so what about factions like the power gangers, the boomers and those other factions, are those less important, and the game story line focus more on ncr vs legion?

The game focuses on the NCR vs. the Legion because the central conflict in the game is the NCR holding the Hoover Dam and the Legion trying to take it from them. Other factions are important to the story, but in the end most of them don't have the manpower and materiel to take or hold the Dam. The reason that you get an NCR flavor or Legion flavor to a lot of quests is that those are the only two factions who are in direct and mutual opposition and currently in conflict in the Mojave (the Brotherhood and the NCR don't get along, but they're not actively fighting, and most people aren't really aware that the Boomers would like to blow them up.)

Those are the minor factions. You can recruit them to help the 3 big ones big ones and they have their own dynamics.

Really only the Brotherhood, Boomers, and Khans though. The faction mechanic is mostly supposed to add verisimilitude, since "these people like you because you've helped them, those people hate you because you're hurt them" is more realistic than people reacting to you based on your karma. So help out the White Gloves or Freeside if that's what you want, but it's not like Miick, Ralph, and Marjorie are going to show up at the dam (since they wouldn't be able to help at all.)

so would wearing faction armor help me do the quests that would normally close off once i do pick a side? or am i still recognized once i have enough bad karma with a faction?

It will only help with you being able to move around hostile factions' territory. You can't do both NCR and Legion quests, you have to choose who you are going to ally with.

You can, however, pick up quests from a faction that hates you by wearing the appropriate faction disguise to set their opinion of you to neutral. You just run the risk of failing those quests when you take off the armor. There are some NCR quests without a Legion analogue (like Three Card Bounty) that you could use NCR armor to get if the NCR hates you for whatever reason.

i am supposed to kill pres. kimball at the dam, but i am wondering if i get to change my mind like i could with the powder gangers (instead of helping them, i help the ncr to wipe em out), so i was hoping i could do the same and save pres. kimball.

Uhm nope, you are already an enemy of the state because you are helping their enemies of War. They give you 2 warnings with the Don't Thread on the bear Quest.
Edit:
I guess you can switch to the Yesman route if you want to abandon the Legion route so late on.

Also I think Three Card Bounty is given out by a character that can sniff out faction disguises.

i decided to go yesman and finish it, i plan to play more carefully this time around. i notice the NCR rangers are immune to your disguises.

Like W said, once you get "Don't tread on the bear" and "Beware the wrath of Cesar" those are warnings to make your mind up, once and for all. Neither of those are quests, but rather stern warnings. Once either one of them fail, you are off their payroll forever.

To be a bit more specific - NCR will stop all dealings with you, if you cooperate ANY more (as in, reporting back at all) to House, Cesar or Yes man after the warning shows up. Legion will do the same if you report back to NCR, House or Yes man after the warning.
The only way to continue getting quests after being cut off, is to wear faction armors - basically disguise who you are, because they would otherwise consider you an enemy - or just untrustworthy.

so i could quite literally kill some legion and ncr members and be blacklisted from both, right?

i have decided to go ncr this time and even though i am still early in the game, i got legion assassins consistently attacking me. :S

You shouldn't kill members of any of the 2 major factions all willy nilly so early in the game unless you want to face the challenge of the Hit Squads. You will have to get to Vegas and make Benny escape to get the temporal Pardon of Caesar.

To me, the answer to that should be very obvious: Yes, they both equally frown upon having their darling members killed by you :D
As a general rule, I tend to regard violence and murder as very serious offenses, in terms of roleplay and immersion. I never, ever hurt NCR members, for example, because I - personally - consider them "legitimate", and therefore citizens, and as such, any violence towards them a crime.
Legion I consider illegitimate, "terrorists and insurgents" if you will, so, to hell with them!

That is of course player preference, but by generally considering violence very serious, as a ground rule, you can avoid some hefty reprecussions at least early on. For example, when I first meet Legion at Novac, I am humble and respectful, and allow them to walk away, I don't engage. Quests requiring violent engagement I deliberately save for later, for when I am ready to personally "declare war" on them.

(This reminds me of FO3, where in the alien space ship that raider chick reminds you not to kill her, when pretend-fighting to gain the attention of the alien guards. Goddamnit, I don't need to be reminded not to murder my fucking allies! Such immersion-breaking crap... :D)
