How to take Metzger out?

Atomic Postman

Vault Archives Overseer
I'm replaying Fallout 2 for the first time in quite some years, and I have decided to get Vic out the hard way, by killing Metzger and his goons.

Only problem is I'm not sure how to go about it.

I've tried locking the door to the main room, stealing metzgers shotgun and leading them into the courtyard outside, but it isn't working.

Equipment wise, I've got:

Double Barreled Shotgun
Leather Armor
44. Magnum
10mm Pistol
Six Stimpacks
Health Pack

I've also got 35 Hit Points.

Any tips?

I feel like a noob again.

Either heavier firepower or more levels.

Actually heavier firepower either way. AFAIR It's a tough fight.

Get some backup if you can as well. Sulik at least.

I'm playing Fallout 2 right now and I feel like they are a bit too much strong for you... There are *a lot* of goons (around 12 I believe) and 35 hp is pretty low.

So I'd wait for some level up and of course use some companions.

Edit: Have you tried camping in the little rooms on the right (near the fridge or in Vic's room). In this way maybe you can avoid fighting all the goons at the same time.

Using locked doors you should be able to kill them as 2/3 lvl without problems.
Lock EVERY door, kill few outside, then few in passage, then unlock last door to Metzeger.

If still couldn't, maybe try with psycho?

I reminded about another, ultimate trick.
Lock doors, kill those outside, then stand near window. Waste 1 AP to move, shoot through window, hide, next turn and so on. They wouldn't even touch you. : )

I was very happy when I found that trick the first time :)

EDIT: Also, I love George's avatar.

My strategy tends to be

1. Steal their ammo, and steal Metzgers guns.
2. Get yourself far out in the street, preferably around a corner, with a hunting rifle, and draw them out. Having Sulik with you doesn't hurt.
This way, the guards outside should react first, and often the ones indoors dont react, allowing you to
3. Fight the battle in two rounds.

Locking doors is also helpful, if you find the battle to be too difficult, as explained above.

Okay, finally managed to take him down by locking all the doors, stealing his shotgun and doing a bit of peak-a-boo with a shotgun, and sulik was there to be a human shield also.

Got out of there one level higher, result!

It's odd, I've played Fallout 2 several times but never tried to take Metzger out, this time though I'm aiming for a "cannon" playthrough.

I know I've got to fuck Ms Bishop, but other than that I'm not sure what endings are cannon.

Here's a rundown.

Basically:

1. Wipe out the Salvatores and Mordinos
2. Give the chip to Marge LeBarge in Redding. Don't give the antidote to Painless Doc Johnson OR assassinate him afterwards.
3. Get Vault City recognized as independent (will have to check references, though).
4. Get Modoc prosperous again.
5. Fix and optimize Gecko.
6. Broker the deal with Vault 15. Tandi must stay president.
7. Don't kill Westin or Carlson.

That's about it.

Do I have to wipe out the Salvatores and Mordinos? I thought just having the kid would do that, if I remember correctly it says your kid wipes them out.

Isn't the Gecko one bugged?

Also, I thought the Vault City ending that was cannon was where they couldn't cope and the NCR annexed them.

According to Fallout Bible:
The Vault City that I helped establish was to outlast me and continue on for many more years. In the elections that occurred after the destruction of the remnants of the United States government, Senior Council Member McClure was appointed First Citizen and I retired to honorary council member status. With my new free time, I traveled south to NCR and met the NCR President. I was responsible for much of the legislation that followed in the years between NCR and our City.

In canon run Vault City should get best ending and be independent, otherwise that info from bible can't happen.
They will join to NCR under McClure rule with Lynette approval, in peaceful way. (one of the reasons why Cass is calling them pacifists)

Isn't the Gecko one bugged?
Yep, but there RP comes.

In theory, you don't need to wipe out Mordinos because according to Clayton Etienne for some time both Mordinos and Wright were ruling over town, propably after Fallout 2. Mordinos however lost everything with Myron dying in the Den and jet cure spreading over all California.

Look at it:

Yep, it's quite doable at low levels if ALL you have is Sulik, and some ingenuity. I took Meztger's shotgun off his hands, locked him in his room and locked the compound itself, and when I opened fire on the guards outside, I used the corners of the building for cover. I took out the entire Slavers guild without popping a single Stim on myself OR Sulick, at level 4. When you approach the scenario by opening fire on them without taking any measures to leverage the fight in your favor and just experience a dozen armed thugs with robust HP pools smoking your ass, it can seem really imposing and arguably damn-near impossible until you come back with space-age equipment. But that's classic Fallout for ya; if your only method is the headlong first into danger approach you're going to fail or find it quite challenging, but if you apply some creativity to your methods then you'll go far! It rewards you for being diplomatic for this very reason, not just "because it can" *COUGH*FO3*COUGH*. Good game design.

Man, I really need to replay the RP again, and since the latest version was recently released, all the more reason to do so!

I'm just about to depart for Vault City, is it okay to install the Restoration Project or will that screw things up?

EDIT:I just tried to install it and apparently I can't because my game is already installed in the steam directory, what do I do?

You should NEVER use the same save for transitioning from an unmodded game to a modded game, or even from differing version of the same mod. The RP includes this very warning, so if you install it, you'll be starting over. I'm pretty sure you can apply the RP mod to the game even if it's located in your Steam Library, it just might necessitate manual installation, and some tweaks. I know a friend of mine had to make some manual changes when he tried to apply the Unofficial Path (also from killap) to his GoG version of the game, so I'm pretty sure that the RP is naturally designed for the Humongous Install version of the game from the actual disc. If you need help, contact one of the developers of the mod, they should have answers.

I just drew him and his crew out and kited them into a conflict with Lara's gang to weaken them, then I picked off the survivors.

The window trick works wonders. I use it all the time.

I'm playing again, and this time I've decided to take Metzger out too.
I just wanted to share that after you complete that mission with Lara and the gang, after taking down Marc don't end the combat, and go up to the Slavers Guild. When you decide to attack the slavers (after locking the doors, great great tip  ), Lara and the rest of the gang will help you.

Cool tips about leading them to Lara's gang. The other ways seem a little exploitey. (no one wonders why some douche is running around messing with the locks?) Gonna try this.
