How would you feel about a 3D remake of the first Fallout?

I would argue that at some point better writing is shooting one's own game in the foot ~these days. Sadly even Todd Howard recounts watching [presumably enough] players play their game and come to an NPC conversation, and just click through the dialog to see who to go shoot.

I think that better writing relies on an interested audience to be more than a hindrance now. [Or is perhaps seen that way.]

*I hope this changes in a few years.

That....would actually explain much. If 3% of your player base would appreciate an RPG, why would you ever bother making one, when a quest driven shooter is MORE than good enough. Do you have a source for that? Cause, for really real, that's depressing. I cannot even fault him if that's true.

No, not on the damn creation engine or gamebryo. But say Unreal 4 or Unity 5? I thought about it for a long while, 5 years to be exact. And I thought about a team that'd stick faithful to original gameplay mechanics and elements of the first two fallouts and remake it in beautiful 3D with maybe a lot of additional content. At least 40 new quests and at least 11 new locations to explore and many new weapons and armor that can be introduced in DLC content or non DLC content. What do you think? I'd really like to start a small team to remake the first Fallout but ehhhh. How do you feel about this?

I don't want any remakes, I want good sequels.

I mean that's kinda my point man. I'd rather see a 3D isometric game done along the lines of Wasteland 2 with maybe the Unreal 4 Engine. Some new locations and quests would do nice as well. Like the Vault Dweller visiting Dayglow and proves as something meaningful to the plot

I wouldn't mind a remake too much. I doubt it'd be 100% faithful but still it'd be nice to play Fallout 1 modernized a bit..

Also, I really dislike the Unity engine. Wasteland 2 ran like ass on my computer despite me having above its recommended hardware specifications - even on low settings.

The source for the Todd comment is his George Mason University presentation IRRC; but he has done this talk several times before, it may be one of the others.

(He's kind of insulting towards the early series in this talk ~IMO.)

I dunno. The problem with remakes is that you often lose the charm of the original.

However, one of my main issues with Fallout 1 was the time limit you had in the first version of the game, and although time in the 3D Fallout games presents the possibility of you completing things in short order (unless you require a lot of waiting and need to rest), I still think having mandated time limits in a video game are often a deterrent. That's just me, though.

I found that it worked and was manageable.

If I recall correctly, some guys are actually attempting this via new Vegas modding. But it shows what I fear would occur with a remake of the isometric games: they were developed with isometric in mind and when converted to first person, need to either be extensively altered or they will be off in terms of game design. Example: traveling in the first fallout used a map system and you chose where to go, occasionally having random encounters along the way. This doesn't work for a first person game and would be derided in today's gaming state. I'm up for a remake, but it needs to be on key, otherwise I'll stick with isometric versions.

I'd enjoy something akin to Wasteland 2. Actually, I'd love Fallout 3 and NV made in the same way to allow for more stuff on screen. Take that prequel comic for New Vegas, the cover shows a whole bunch of people crowding the streets of Fremont. It'd be cool to see that many NPC's or at least something similar to the old games' number of random NPC's in-game.

We share passion and common interest. Please read my other thread and we can work something out.
