i have never done any mods before, what are the best for NV and Fallout 3?

Soapstone

It Wandered In From the Wastes
i had a friend recommend using nexus for finding the mods for fallout 3 and new vegas, but i really don't know what mods are good. i had heard one of them was supposed to be like a patch, fixing some of the crashes and glitches, but i can't remember exactly what it was called past YUP(?).

first mod listed on the site i did find for new vegas was one called autumn leaves, is that any good? are there any other recommended ones? and how do i launch the mod?

YUP is a restoration patch. What you're talking about is NVAC

Autumn leaves is a very high quality quest mod focusing on dialogue and character interaction.

What I suggest installing:

NVSE - Literally nothing will work without it.
Mod Configuration Menu - Allows control of other large mods and may be a requirement.
NMC Texture Pack - If your PC can handle better textures
JSawyer's Overhaul or Project Nevada - New features to add into the game
New Vegas Uncut (Series of mods) - Restore previously cut content
EVE - Improved visual effects for all weapons
WMX - More custom mods for weapons, might need to install a patch if you have other mods that add weapons or weapon mods
Weapon Mod Menu - Allows removal of weapon mods in a neat menu
OHUD - Full control of the HUD, from new features added by mods to moving different HUD elements
Darnified UI - Not sure if it's on the nexus, makes the UI a lot neater and less clunky
A familliar friend - Replaces Bethesda's clunky POS with a handheld pipboy looking closer to the originals (An arm mounted version exists too)
Interface Mod - Revelation - Another UI mod that looks closer to the originals.
JIP CC&C - More control of your companions without having to initiate dialogue.
Weapon Retexture Project - Need patch to work with WMX
YUP - Bugfixes and stuff

Then you can add an ENB and whatever else you feel looks nice/fitting. You should also look around on youtube for tutorials, Gophersvids made a series showing how to install the basic things (NVSE, DarnUI, NMM)

I will also suggest checking out The Gun Network since they have a lot of armour/weapon/animation mods that can't be found on the Nexus. You will have to register though.

This is about as much as I can remember off the top of my head, hope this helped.

so it looks like a lot of the mods change up the game in some way either by patch mods or adding/changing elements, even changing up the textures. is there many mods like autumn leaves that are DLC content type? or are most of them like the list you mentioned?

Project Nevada is als oa very good mod, and it has a compatibility patch with EVE, Sawyer's mod, IMPACT and WMX.

DLC sized mods? there are a few, the best ones are the Someguy series, New Vegas Bounties 1 and 2, Russell and The Inheritance are pretty good.
There is also Beyond Thunderdome and Denver Dog city.
The aforementioned Autum Leaves, The Rockwell Descent, Honest Hearts Reborn, DUST and the in Progress mod Project Brazil.

There are also a number of mods that put back in lost content such as quests.
I also use several that remove the walls that break up Freeside and the Strip.

Altho, if you want to use the Freeside Open and Strip Open mods (by moburna) You will need to both use the 4gb Launcher and a good PC, they are kind of resource intensive.

Ok, question: why do i need to use one of the mod launchers you guys mentioned? why can't I just use the fallout 3/NV launcher to run the mods?

Because the mod launchers allow management of the load order, thus preventing clashes between mods that conflict with each other. It's also much more organised and allows a clean uninstall of the mods.

There are tons of mods that take and even Require the DLCs to work. Project Nevada for example has an entire module entirely dedicated to DLC.

Also, advice, keep your mod count bellow 134, helps with stability and preventing the dreaded Texture Glitches.

Speaking of quest mods, some good ones are:

New Vegas Bounties - Bounty-hunting mod, which has a pretty good story to go with it. Good source of early-game caps.
New Vegas Bounties II - Continuation of the story, introducing new characters and the like, should be installed after completing NVB I
Autumn Leaves - Quality writing, voice acting and overall design, definitely worth getting
Russel - A companion with his own quest, will comment on your actions in New Vegas Bounties.
The Inheritance - Another goody by Someguy
New Vegas Killer - The Evil character's NVB
Beyond Boulder Dome - A huge quest mod to the point of being it's own DLC, features gigs of new models and textures.
Dog City Denver - Another huge mod by the same guy, not as good as BBD in my opinion.

ok, so for mod manager apps, which is the best? my friend said not to use the one that is given at the nexus.

I used Nexus Mod Manager for pure convenience, since it allows you to download and install the mod directly without having to extract anything. But a better choice would be FOMM since it's more stable and doesn't need an update every day.

I also recommend FOMM for if you want to use mods in Fallout New Vegas.
At some point you will have to learn how to figure out how to extract and install mods manually but it is honestly not that difficult. Often modders have already put the various assets in the maps in which they have to be placed in the Data map.

autumn leaves dlc tells me to just extract the contents into the data folder for NV, so i asssume that is how you do most of them, however i dont know exactly how the fallout launcher works and how to get the mod into the game, w/ using the data option.

Always install mods with the Mod Organizers, it also lets you uninstall them more easily later on.
To install with mod managers you jus add them into themanager and double click on them.
Check Gopher's channel for more through instructions.

ok, i tried using nmm, and it does not want to work apparently, dloading supposedly worked fine but it refused to install, so i dont know if it didnt download it properly. i may have to manually dload and tell the mod manager to install it by file? i have no clue how to get around on some of the new apps made, i am really not used to having the typical easy to find settings of the older generation of computers.
