IC- Zombie Apocalypse Chapter 2- The Quick and the Undead

By the Helicopter:

"The docs are probably the best people to ask about the infection, Trooper," said McCain. "It seems that anyone who gets bit comes down with it - except your friend Kimberly, who seems to be immune. Lt. Blanco said on the way here that even their touch can spread the infection, and since we're not protected we're to avoid physical contact with anyone potentially infected. You should probably ask her if you want to know more. She should be coming back upstairs soon, or you could go down and see her.

"As for what's going on outside, it looks like things are bad all over. It's worst of all in the cities, since that's where most people live - or used to. Not just this region or the country, but the whole world is affected going by the intel we've been getting. I don't know a whole lot more. Communications is the responsibility of Lt. Malone and her team, and Airman Malanowski."

Waiting for him to finish before "Their "touch" spreads infection? I'm no expert, but that sounds more like saliva or fluid transfer, if people that get bitten are dead, if you know what I mean. At least it's not airborne, or we'd all be screwed! Thank God Kimberly seems to be immune, so maybe there is some kind of resistance to it, maybe even a vaccine.

"Okay, if I can, I'll talk to LT Blanco or one of our other people will."

"Well, it's a shame that things are falling apart all over the place. We have to keep in mind we've got to work together and not think of each other as the enemy. We should have a talk with LT MAlone or Airman Malanowski when we get the chance, see what the rest of the Patrol is like. My guess is, it's not good."

"Thanks for your help. Do you know if the toilets are working around here? The diner looks fucked, but the motel should have some that still have water in the tanks."

1LT Blanco

Bunker Mess Hall/Corridor:

"Cell block?" replied Captain Lereux to Lt. Blanco. "Guard room? What the hell are those doing in the basement? Never mind, you can explain when you get back here, Lieutenant. Render what assistance you can without placing yourself at risk, then return here as soon as possible with Ramirez. You two should stick together while you're down there."

"Ahh, roger that. Will render assistance. Break. RV with Ramirez and buddy-up." She signed off, "Blanco out."

Max

Bunker Cell Block:

Max barked, then sniffed at the rathole to smell if any of the diseased rats had escaped that way. The cell reeked not only of gunpowder, blood and death, but the faint odors of long-gone occupants and harsh cleaning solvents. He then cocked his ear to listen for anything coming at him.

In the reception area-

"I'm afraid I have to. He may want to see it for himself.
We shouldn't try the switch untill your ready to leave. He said we
were coming back. However he said there would be guards." He turns to Bo.
"There's no time. Do you have any Military grade weapons? If so you have to hide them. The last thing we need is an even more tense relationship.

OOC- Walkers from the west killed: 31/36
Walkers with head wounds: 1 (9 damage to head)

IC-
On the roof of the motel-
Airman Bobby Sheen's streak of accuracy continued as well; both of his hits were solid, one of them punching through a skull and out the other side. "Two more eliminated," he said. "Only five left, including that one I wounded a while back."

Thayer started taking aim. "They're still a little far off for me," he said, 'but I'm ready if any get past you two."

Cole climbed down the ladder, soon reaching the bottom.

(Black may fire five times.)

On the motel balcony-
Hockey watched the last few people slowly approaching. They were now within a decent range for him to hit them with his SAW.

(Hockey may fire for up to five combat rounds if he wishes, but only four of the zombies are close enough for him to hit without a range penalty. Those can all be targeted each round.)

Captain Lereux and Duran stood watch on the other side of the balcony. "I can't see what's going on on the other side of the helicopter," said the captain, "but Sergeant McCain and Airman Ortega can, at least."

In the medic's room-
"What else did the other scientists say?" asked Phillips while Zorie Spooner continued to examine him.

"That Bridges woman thinks aliens are behind this. Sounds kind of far-fetched to me, though."

"I don't believe in aliens either. There are some things that science can't explain, though."

"What do you mean?"

"This has to be the beginning of the apocalypse, foretold in the Book of Revelation. There's no other explanation for it."

"Oh?" Zorie glanced at the Bible sitting open on the bed.

"God is pouring out his wrath upon the Earth because of mankind's sins. I don't know why I wasn't taken in the Rapture. It could have happened earlier today, and with all the chaos nobody would have noticed. It's also possible that the Rapture happens later on, like some say, but maybe I still need to get closer to God. He hasn't forsaken me, though. It was a miracle that I survived." He looked her in the eyes and lowered his voice. "This place isn't safe, and we're on a fool's errand. The base has no intention of retrieving us. That's the only place nearby we can really be safe."

"I don't believe they'd just abandon us," she said. "Besides, we've got our duty to think about. The others need our help."

In the motel-
Lt. Malone and the others pushed the dolly back into the old comm room. "Okay," she said. "Now for the big one. It'll take all of us to lift it."

Outside the garage-
"You're welcome, ma'am" replied McCain to Erica Spears. "I don't know much about biology, but you may be right. We really don't know everything about how the infection is spread, but Lt. Blanco wanted to err on the side of caution. Airman Malanowski is under my command - he's just detailed to Lt. Malone at the moment - so I should be able to talk to him later once I can go back to the motel.

"As for toilets, I'm pretty sure the ones in the motel still work, but the captain has ordered that no civilians be allowed in the motel. I guess there aren't any working toilets in the diner, going by what I can see. Me, I'd just go in the bushes or something, but I guess that's not an option in your case. Anyway, it could be dangerous going out there. Wouldn't do to get caught with your pants down."

The first fuel barrel was now about halfway drained into the chopper's tank.

On the roof of the garage-
Samantha turned to look to the east when she heard the gunfire, but the bulk of the diner kept her from seeing what was happening.

In the garage-
With Bob's assistance, Mitchell and the other mechanics made faster progress on the truck while Alice kept working on her rifle. Wallace stood guard by the open garage door.

In the diner-
Willie collected some more 2-liter bottles of soda in bags and carried them to the stairs. He started heading down.

Beth had started running back to the rear exit as soon as she had heard the shotgun go off.

On the east side of the diner-
Beth emerged from the back door and saw the maimed dog snapping its jaws at Kerry. She remained steady and hastily brought her rifle to bear. She fired from the hip, striking home and putting the thing out of its misery.

Kerry exhaled with relief and smiled when she saw Beth. "Nice shooting, Tex!" she said, cracking open her shotgun and reloading it. "Thought I was a goner for sure. How could that dog keep coming after taking both barrels?"

"Can dogs come back from the dead too?" asked Azadeh.

"Yeah," said Beth. "I saw one earlier."

"I'd better get up on the roof before more trouble comes. I'm not especially good at climbing - always hated the ropes in gym class - but let's see if I can do it myself." She managed it with little difficulty.

On the roof of the diner-
Luke saw to his dismay that his M-14 had jammed. Azadeh hauled herself over the lip of the roof and stood beside him, looking him over. "Hello," she said. "You wanted this Grease gun? Don't you have enough guns already? I think I'd be better off with it. I'm a very good shot. I realize I have other weapons too, but I'm low on 5.56mm for my rifle and even lower on 9mm for my pistol. I could use a good close range gun."

(Luke may attempt to unjam his rifle by rolling against his unmodified Rifle skill of 80%.)

In the warehouse-
Joe Barring followed Baldwin across the warehouse and down the stairs to the reception area.

In the reception area-
Stephanie looked downcast. "I'd better keep working as long as I can, then," she said. "But what happens if the chopper is ready to leave before you get back? We can't leave without this!"

Baldwin and Joe came in. "Actually, it'll be ready pretty soon," said Baldwin. "It's fueling up now. Maybe another fifteen minutes or so will do it."

Stephanie brightened. "Really? Dr. Hausmann, did you hear that?" she called.

Dr. Hausmann stepped back into the hallway. "What was that, Stephanie?" she asked. "I couldn't quite make it out."

"The chopper's back and almost ready to go! Just fifteen more minutes or so!"

"Ah, wunderbar! That gives me just enough time to help that poor girl who shot herself in the leg."

"Good thinking about the military weapons," said Bo to Ramirez. "We're lucky they didn't notice sooner, but I guess they've had their minds on other things and haven't gotten that close a look. My Mossberg's police issue, so that's no worry. Someone should tell Robert, though. He's got an M4."

"I've just got Mr. Foo's pistol," said Stephanie. "I guess you'll be wanting it back before we go."

"No, keep it," said Mr. Foo. "You saved my life with it earlier, so I'd say you've earned it. You're also far more important than I am. May it keep you safe. My MP-5 will do for firepower, and my sword and my body are both deadly weapons in case things get too close for comfort."

Stephanie smiled. "Thank you!"

Ellen looked at her shotgun. "I got this from one of those weapon crates," she said. "Sure looks military to me. Guess I better not let any of the grunts see it. Not exactly a concealable weapon, though, so that means they can't see me."

"If you're interested," said Rosie, "some of the others are exploring this place and they could always use another gun in case they run into more of those horrible rats...or something else. Mr. Foo, did you say you were looking for someone who could draw a map? Mitchell's rather artistic, and I think he could help you. He's busy repairing the truck, though, so you'd have to wait until he's done. Excuse me, I'm going to see how Lynne's doing." She returned to the hall.

In the hallway-
Kimberly and Sally carried Lynne into the hall from the guard room and made their way towards the mess hall door. Rosie held it open for them. "How is she doing?" she asked, her face lined with worry.

"I think she'll be all right," said Sally. "Kimberly got to her quickly and did a damn fine patch job. I can help the doctors set a splint. The break is pretty low, but it'll heal in time and I think she'll keep her foot."

"Hey, Kimberly!" called Bo. "When you're done, can we talk to you for a minute?"

"Sure!" she answered.

In the office-
Jim Kerr sat down at the desk with the journal, opened it up, and started to read. It was written by Captain Robert Duffy, and he found a few entries of interest while skimming through the early part of it:

Sept. 21 1960- Have taken command of Operation Deep Mole. Our personnel have established that best site for the lab will beneath the general purpose room on the other side of the lab. My people are working diligently. The warehouse above masks our operations from nearby highway, but as a precaution all staff members are new to the area and are not allowed to venture to nearby towns. Have been informed this is of highest priority for National Security although why we are building a lab is unknown to me. Work goes smoothly.

Dec. 30 1960- General layout of the lab is complete and Morris Fletcher has already begun work on the shaft. Electricians and construction staff have made this base a bit more crowded than normal. Supplies continue to come in from Warren but we seem to get the crappy food. Will have to make enquiries regarding that.

January 19 1961. One of the construction crew committed suicide by electrocuting himself. He had been complaining of headaches and sleepless nights. But I wonder if this suicide has something to do with the shaft. Ever since the shaft began we've been having a higher rate of injury among the staff and quite a few of the crew have asked to be relieved and deployed elsewhere.

June 4 1961- Laboratory officially complete. All construction crew has been deployed elsewhere to parts unknown. I remain with my security detail to watch what appears to be an empty hole in the ground. I have closed the chamber down as per instructed and have been informed that the Shaft is off limits. Most of my detail feels uneasy.

July 7. Airman Bill Kearney disappeared yesterday. My first thoughts turned to the lab and the shaft. We found the locks on the chamber and the hatch opened. We investigated the lab and found the lift had been raised above the level of the lab, but that the shaft was too deep for our lights to reveal its bottom. Sgt. Fetterman and Airman King volunteered to go down the shaft and found Kearney had either fallen (or jumped?) to his death. Fetterman informed me later that the shaft must run near a mile deep. When I asked him what he saw down there, he said simply, "You don't want to know."

In the cell block-
Randall rejoined Gary and Duke in the cell block. As he passed the first cell on the right and the first two on the left, he slid open the panels and looked inside the cells. He also tried the doors, but they were locked. "These three are empty," he said. "Don't know what's in the other eight, though."

"I've got to get to the generator as soon as possible to keep the food from spoiling," said Gary, "Duke, I'm going to leave it to you to make sure we don't get any more rats. Randall, you come with me and watch my back. I can't wait around for the others to catch up."

Sniffing around the hole, Max couldn't sense the smell of death and decay that had permeated the rats he had encountered, just normal ratty smells. He heard distant squeaking coming from within the walls.

Max

Bunker Cell Block:

The big dog whuffed as he pulled back from the rathole, clearly not interested. Tail wagging, he trotted off to find his friend, the guy who smelled like his name was "Jim".

Trooper Erica Spears

By the Helicopter:

"Heck, I done the SERE course and I'm a farm girl. Bushes are no nevermind to me. But it's just not safe out there. Well, if the Motel's off limites, maybe I can find a toilet that's intact in the diner or garage and will flush. Or a bucket."

"Speaking of the Motel being off limits... I think I see why there is tension here. It's obviously the only secure shelter around, and the people can see that if push comes to shove, the lifeboat's off-limits for them because men with guns will shoot them. Damned if they do and damned if they don't."

She knew that this was probably illegal as well, and at the very least against the code of ethics regarding dealing with civilians. Still, mentioning that to the Sergeant wouldn't do any good at the moment. Maybe they could work through something with that Blanco officer he mentioned, the one who seemed to be more geared towards the medical or scientific side of events, and might be more influential if this was a matter of quarantine.

"Sorry, not trying to pick a fight or anything. But if these people don't have any reason to cooperate, then it's just not going to happen. I can't change human nature, and I know you're following orders."

She planned on letting him have the last word, then looking for some place to do what she needed to.

1LT Blanco

Bunker Mess Hall:

Holstering her sidearm, she moved out into the hall to help move the casualty. "What happened?" she asked Dr. Hausmann.

At the hotel -

Cole headed inside to salvage a chair or two. He wasn't worried about anyone whining about him breaking them...

In the garage -

Bob continues to work on the truck.

On the roof of the diner -

"It's not for me. I don't like full auto's, too much wasted ammo. The chopper pilot asked me to clean it for her. She only has my bolt action Savage, I think." Luke tells Azadeh "As for 5.56mm NATO, you might want to try and get some from the airforce guys. Of course, they're unlikely to hand it to you unless you offer them a fair trade. I'm guessing they have MRE's, but maybe they could use some real food and drinks. Or maybe you can come up with something better."

Luke followed the jamdrill, but found a shell crushed under the extractor. He let out an angry grunt and tried to extract the casing again.

On The Roof-
Black fires five more rounds at the incoming hostiles
they all hit their mark and another five hit the ground dead.
"The last of the hostiles have been eliminated over." Black sends over the radio.

In the reception area-
"So you must be Bo nice to meet you." says Joe.
Ramirez stares off to the side thinking, then he looks up
"I may have an idea. I'm not sure if it would work however.
First, I remmber seeing some electronics up stairs perhaps there is a laptop there.", He turns to Bo "I'm not sure this would hold up legally but you said you are responsible for the scientists safety right? The reason why their safety is so important is because they are working on a way to possible stop whats happening around the world. To continue working on a solution they need the laptops and since you said you are reponsible for their safety you are atleast indirect responsible for the computers safety. So that means the computers are under the NSP control."

On the roof of the motel-
"If this keeps up, Sarge," said Bobby Sheen while he exchanged his rifle's magazine for a full one, "we're going to need more ammo. There's about a hundred extra rounds for each of us in that ammo crate they carried up to the balcony. Next time someone climbs up here, they should bring our ammo with them. Even then, at this rate we'll run out of it within hours. I hope Warren can resupply us."

On the motel balcony-
"Good job, Sergeant Black," said Captain Lereux over the radio. "Keep alert."

Hockey and Duran remained at their posts.

In the medic's room-
"Yeah, you're right," said Phillips. "I know I shouldn't be afraid, but I can't help it."

"It's okay," said Zorie. "I'm scared too."

"You're a civilian, ma'am. I'm supposed to be an AFSF Trooper."

"And you are. It was very brave of you to run out into that field to try to save Corporal Alanen."

"I just wish it had ended better for him, but he was doomed as soon as those...things bit him."

"Well, you look fine to me. Not a trace of symptoms, and no physical injuries whatsoever." Zorie got on the radio. "Sergeant McCain, this is Zorie Spooner. "I've examined Airman Phillips. I think he's okay to return to active duty, but that's up to you."

In the motel-
Lt. Malone and the people under her command each took a corner of the massive communications unit. "One," she said, "two, three - lift!" The four of them raised the bulky piece of hardware off the floor and set it down gently on the dolly, making sure it was balanced in the center. "Okay, let's move out. Take it slow and careful. We can't risk damaging it."

In a downstairs motel room-
Since all of the rooms on the east side were still locked up, Cole headed around the south side of the motel to the rooms on the west, which had been unlocked so that furniture could be moved out to construct the barricades. He started breaking the legs off of the chairs, which was simple for a man of his strength. He estimated it would take him another minute to finish, and then a few more minutes to construct the ladder.

Outside the garage-
"Well, ma'am," said Sergeant McCain to Erica Spears, "maybe you can convince these people and I can talk to my superiors. If you need to go do anything, we can switch the fuel pump to the second barrel for you when the first one is empty." Then he received the message from Zorie Spooner and considered whether to clear Airman Phillips to return to duty.

On the roof of the garage-
When the shooting stopped, Samantha returned her attention to the north, but detected no movement.

In the garage-
Progress on the repairs continued steadily. Alice guessed that it would only take her another couple of minutes to finish fixing "Wyatt."

On the east side of the diner-
"Shooting them in the head is the best way to take them down fast," Beth told Kerry, "but there's not always time to aim if they get close. Then it takes an awful lot of firepower, as you just saw. Let's get you back downstairs before something worse happens." They went inside the diner and headed down the stairs.

In the warehouse-
Willie entered the warehouse from above. "Hey, Robert," he said. "I've brought some soda down from the fridge."

"Thanks," he said. "Mitchell brought down a bottle earlier, and while Kerry drank half of it, there's enough left for me. I'm sure the others downstairs could use some, though."

In the reception area-
"Nice to meet you too," said Bo, shaking Joe's hand. "I'm Bo Richards. Glad you made it through. I'd have been at Brownson to meet you, but I took a bullet from a .357 Magnum earlier. I'm glad Wallace was able to fill in for me and get you and the chopper back safe.

He turned to Javier Ramirez. "I'm not sure if your argument would hold up or not."

"Sounds like a bit of a reach to me," said Baldwin. "The computers are still federal property. Johnnie Cochran might have been able to make it work, but he's probably busy eating someone right about now."

"Well, I like the idea of substituting a laptop from one of those crates."

"I'll go see if I can find one." Baldwin walked upstairs.

"I'm about ten percent of the way done, Brigetta!" called Stephanie as she typed. She looked back at the others. "How many people can the helicopter hold?"

"There's room for two in the pilot's and co-pilot's seats," said Michael, "plus you could fit three in the back, but it would be a bit of a squeeze."

"Well, Erica Spears will be flying it, and Dr. Hausmann and I are going too. It might be a good idea to bring Bob along as a co-pilot, and he's a great mechanic too. We could also use someone for protection." She looked hopefully at Bo.

"I'd love to come with you," said Bo. "I need to make sure you get to Omaha, and it wouldn't do to let you go into a potentially dangerous situation without me. You'll need to land somewhere to refuel, and Omaha itself won't be any picnic. I can use pretty much all kinds of small arms. I'd like to get a rifle before we go, though I'm better with a shotgun."

"Hey, what about Sean's Marlin? Whatever happened to it?"

"I think Gary took it. Maybe we can ask him for it back."

"I'll go find him and ask," said Ellen. Bo gave her a description of Gary and pointed out the way, and she entered the hall.

"You know," said Michael, "I can fly a helicopter too if you need a second pilot. I'm not much of a navigator, though, and I'm all thumbs as a mechanic. I do know quite a bit about astronomy and computers, however, and I'm a fine shot with a pistol."

"Really?" said Jenny. "I'm an astronomer too! Boy, I wish I could come with."

"No you don't," said Stephanie. "I won't lie to any of you. The place where we're heading is surrounded by many thousands of these reanimated cadavers. I don't know if any of us are going to be coming back. It's not my decision who comes with us, anyway."

"I can also fly a helicopter as well as provide some protection," said Mr. Foo, "but I couldn't leave my wife. Besides, you've already got capable pilots."

In the hallway-
"There were some infected rats in one of the prison cells back there," explained Kimberly as she helped Dr. Blanco and Sally carry Lynne into the mess hall. "Nobody got bitten, but she accidentally shot herself in the calf while trying to hit one."

"There were rats in the kitchen and pantry too," said Sally, "but they were just the normal kind."

Rosie looked at the shotgun Ellen was toting as she went by. "That's no military shotgun," she told her. "That used to be Hammond's. The others just put it in the crate with the military weapons. It doesn't matter if anyone sees it. I think Mitchell and Jimmy took the military shotguns. Those Colt .45s are military issue, though, so you'll want to hide them."

"Okay, thanks," said Ellen, proceeding into the guard room.

In the kitchen-
The women set Lynne down on the same table where Dr. Hausmann had been lying earlier. "Let's get to work," said Sally, starting to examine the wound. "She's unconscious, and it's probably best she stays that way until we're done. Ready, doctors?"

(Angela Blanco, roll Medicine. Dr. Hausmann, if you're going into the kitchen to help with Lynne's leg, roll Medicine as well.)

Kimberly set Lynne's purse down on the table, then made sure her pistol's safety was on and tucked it into the purse. "What the-" she started, something inside catching her eye. She pulled out a silencer, frowning. "What was Lynne doing with this?"

In the office-
Max trotted into the room, his tail wagging. He looked up and saw Jim seated at the desk, still reading the journal.

Jim continued flipping through the pages and found some more interesting entries in the first half of the book:

July 12th. Fetterman has been given his papers for redeployment to Thule AFB. Anthony King was not so lucky. We found him this morning with his wrists slashed after one of the other men slipped on the pool of blood that had formed under his bunk. Apparently he killed himself in the night. Next to his body was a letter to his girl.

August 16th- I have begun to rotate my people on a more regular basis and am making an effort to stay outside the base for at least 6 hours per day, longer if possible. I find that the long hours here and the lack of something meaningful to do puts them on edge. Better to keep them busy, but the base is too small. More than a week here begins to make one a little crazy.

October 20th. Science Staff has arrived and has taken residence in the lab below. So far they have not gone down the Shaft but are merely settling in. They are very hush-hush about what they are up to. Dr. Kirby reminds me that this is of greatest secrecy. I wonder. I have only so many men under my command for security. How valuable is their secrecy? Worth 18 lives?

October 25th I have been informed by Dr. Kirby that a research team has gone down the Shaft. I wish them more luck than our guys had.

October 29th. One of Dr. Kirby's research team apparently had a fatal accident below. Details are unknown but the body has been shipped to Warren for autopsy. I didn't even get a chance to inspect the body nor have I been given the particulars. Very hush-hush.

November 2nd- Been ordered to close the Chamber by Grey. Unsure if Kirby knows why but I assume the other members of his staff were not aware. After we closed it down they tried to force the hatchway open, without success. They even tried to shoot the glass. Ha Ha! That bullet proof glass sure is thick! We remain in touch with Kirby through the comm system. What we hear is disturbing. Also, new orders state that all staff is to remain on site until further notice.

(Jim Kerr, roll Idea.)

In the cell block-
Gary and Randall headed through the door at the end of the hall, leaving Duke standing in front of the open cell containing Debbie's body. "Those other cells have been here all this time," said Gary. "They can wait until we're done with the generator."

In the prison showers-
Beyond the cell block, Gary and Randall found a shower area for the prisoners. Randall tried one of the faucets. "Water still works," he said. "Just don't drop the soap."

"There's another door at the back," said Gary. "Let's move on."

At the hotel -

Cole tries to rig up the makeshift ladder.

In the garage -

Bob continues to work on the truck.

On the roof of the diner -

Luke unjams the rifle and the crushed brass pops onto the roof.

"Bingo." Luke says and then he goes on to clean the greasegun.

On the Roof-
"Will do over." He turns to Sheen "I just hope they appriceate what
we are doing here."

In the reception area-

"I suppose not but it was worth a shot."
Joe replies to Bo "you going to be ok? Those things pack quite a punch."

OOC- I had hoped more players would have posted by now, but I need to keep moving things forward and I don't know if I'd have time to update tomorrow, so I'm posting tonight. I'll continue writing for Muff's characters this time, and he can start writing for them as soon as he's ready. I'm presuming Lt. Blanco is going to treat Lynne, since that's what Helbent4 indicated. Other characters will do nothing unless I have standing orders for them.

IC-
On the roof of the motel-
"I'm sure they do, Sarge," said Airman Sheen. "I don't know what they'd do without us." He resumed scanning the field of grass through his rifle's scope, but saw no further threats.

Thayer looked off to the east now that the danger from the west was eliminated. "Looks pretty clear to the east and north as far as I can see," he said. "There's a few of them out on the highway prowling through those wrecks, but they're about a mile off and don't seem to be paying attention to us. Can't see much more than a mile or two without a scope, though."

On the motel balcony-
"Sergeant McCain, what's your status?" asked Captain Lereux over the airwaves.

Duran stood beside him and continued keeping watch.

In the medic's room-
Zorie Spooner and Airman Phillips waited for McCain's response. "Guess he's thinking about it," said Zorie.

"Yeah," said Phillips. "I imagine he's got a lot of things on his plate."

In the motel-
Lt. Malone and her team cautiously wheeled the dolly with the bulky communications unit down the hallway and emerged into the motel lobby. "Out the back door and to the southwest stairs," she said.

In a downstairs motel room-
Cole finished breaking the legs off of two chairs, leaving him with eight rungs. If he cut the length of rope he had in half, he could space the rungs about a foot apart and still have enough rope left at the top to tie the ladder to the balcony's rail.

On the roof of the garage-
"We're okay to the north," called Samantha. "Can't see to the west with the motel in the way, but the shooting there stopped so it sounds like they took care of it."

In the garage-
"I'll be done in a minute," said Alice.

"That sounds good, honey," said David as he and the others worked on the truck. "I'm really looking forward to that backrub."

On the roof of the diner-
"That's okay," said Azadeh, "I'm taking care of it." She was already cleaning the Grease gun. "We'll be better off with you keeping an eye out for more trouble anyway."

In the warehouse-
Baldwin came up from below. "Do you guys know which of these boxes have the electronics stuff in them?" he asked.

"Try over that way," said Robert , pointing towards one corner of the warehouse. "There's a crowbar over by the crate with the grenades if you need it."

"Thanks." Baldwin picked up the crowbar and looked around for a crate that might contain laptops. "Found 'em!" he said after a little searching. He easily pried the lid off and removed the wrapping materials. Beneath them were dozens of neatly stacked Sony Vaio laptops, all of them brand new and presumably stolen. Baldwin took one.

Beth and Kerry came down from upstairs. "I'm looking for more people to go up on the roof," said Beth. "Anyone interested?"

"Maybe a little later," said Baldwin. "I've got a few things to do first."

"I'm pretty busy at the moment too," said Willie. He headed past Robert and down to the reception area.

"I'm guarding the scientists right now," said Robert, "but it sounds like they'll be leaving soon on the helicopter. When they do I'll be happy to join you."

"Thanks," said Beth. She smiled nervously, running a hand through her hair.

In the reception area-
"You can say that again," said Bo to Joe. "Lucky for me I had my vest on, or it might have been a different story. Even so, it hurt pretty bad, but the good doctor really knows her stuff. My rib's still a little sore, but it's not broken. I'm doing much better, and I should be back to full health in a day or two."

Willie walked into the room. "I've got some soda here if anyone's thirsty," he said, holding up his bags.

"Great!" said Stephanie, still typing away. "Thanks a bunch. We should probably take a couple bottles with us on the chopper too."

In the hallway-
Dr. Hausmann entered the mess hall, and Rosie came in behind her.

In the kitchen-
Lt. Blanco wasn't making much headway helping Lynne and neither was Sally, but things went much faster once Dr. Hausmann arrived - she easily picked up the slack. "It will take about five minutes," she said. "Ja, she's doing much better now." She began to prepare a splint.

Sally was too distracted by the discovery of the silencer to focus on what she was doing. "I can't imagine why a waitress would be carrying a silencer," she said, frowning.

"Maybe she's no ordinary waitress," said Kimberly. "She could have been Hammond and Earl's personal assassin or something. They're suspects in a few homicide cases, but it would make sense if they used someone else to pull the trigger."

"What?!" said Rosie. "That's utterly ridiculous! Lynne couldn't possibly be a hit woman! She's a thief, sure, but I can't see her as a murderer. Besides, you've seen how inept she is with a gun."

In the office-
Max looked up at Jim Kerr as he turned the pages, starting on the second half of the diary. What he had read so far was perplexing, but he hoped the rest of it would have an explanation:

November 4th- Airman Stoddard put a gun in his mouth and blew his brains out at breakfast today. Maybe it was the eggs.

November 8th. We heard a gunshot from below. Unsure what the implications are. We were told that Kirby had killed himself by one of the other researchers, but I am uncertain. Orders require that we do not breach the hatchway. Supplies being delivered above from Warren. No one is venturing below ground except us poor moles.

Nov 10th. Dr. Niedler has informed us that the rest of the research group is going down the Shaft. As per orders we have not responded.

Nov 17th. Seventh day without any signs of life below. They must be short of food and water by now.

Nov 24th. Still no sign from below. Waiting on orders from Grey as to how to proceed. Detail getting very fidgety.

December 8th. We've been ordered by Grey to begin closing the base down. I have been asked to remain behind to maintain a watch with my more long-term staff.

In the cell block-
Ellen Cody entered from the guard room. Duke continued standing guard outside the open prison cell. As he did, he saw a rat crawl out of the small hole in the wall. It looked like a normal healthy rat, and it didn't try to attack. It turned its head from side to side, sniffing the air.

In the prison showers-
Randall tried the door, and it opened. He and Gary proceeded through it.

In the prisoners' common area-
Randall and Gary found themselves in a large, bare room. If it had been furnished at one time, it was no longer. Lines of long-dried blue paint were visible on the concrete floor, dividing the room into sections.

"This must have been the prisoners' common area," said Randall. "They must have been allowed in here for exercise every so often. Makes sense. I suppose they wouldn't want to risk bringing the prisoners above ground."

"There's a door at the back leading further in," said Gary. He led Randall to a strong metal door and tried it. "Damn, it's locked! We sure could use Lynne's expertise right about now. I'm a skilled engineer, and while I could probably pick some ordinary interior lock in a house, this sort of thing is beyond my skills. Looks kind of like the door and lock they had on the armory. Don't suppose you can pick locks?"

"Nope. What can we do now?"

"We could blow the lock to hell and gone." He raised the Marlin.

On the Roof-

"I hope so." He contiues to look to the west but nothing catches his eye.

In the reception area-
"I just hope you have that long to recover it's gotten quite bad out there.
Are you sure your going to be up to going with the heli? asks Joe.

OCC: I am back for now. So here is my post.

IC:

Outside Garage, near helicopter:
McCain heard the radio and realized that the mike had been pushed away from his face so that Leurex could not hear him talking to the civilizans. Gestering for silence from Spears, he said, "Sir my status is I am guarding the helicopter as ordered. Phillips is cleared to go back to duty now and I would like him to come here and relive me so I can go back to the CP if that is okay with you. Cole what is your status?"

In the motel lobby:
Lewis stopped to stretch his sore back and then helped wheel the dolly through the lobby and toward the stairs hopeing this would be the last trip as he prefered being inside next to his friends the machines.

In the garage:
Alice continued fixing her rifle and as she did so she looked up and smiled at Dave. "Honey you know i can give you more then a backrub and if you don't mind Jimmy can join us so I can teach him a little something about life."

In the Office:
Jim looked up at Max and pet him as he tried to figure out what this journel meant. Suddenly it all came together. He got up to stretch and called Max to him to pet. "Good boy" he said as he realized that from the reading he could tell that 1) Captain Duffy was becoming increasingly unhinged as time passed and 2) that the letter they had found signed by Tony in the barracks with the picture could have been from Anthony King who killed himself on July 12 and that the bloody knife found under the bed might have been the one that King had used to slit his wrists. Since he wanted to know what happened next, he went on to read more of the journal.

On the roof of the diner -
"Alright, thanks." Luke answered Azadeh, and peered into the grassfields. His eye caught something and he shouldered his rifle to take a better look through his scope.

At the hotel -

"Making and rigging up a ropeladder for access to the zipline from above, sarge." Cole answers and continues to secure the ladder.

At the garage -
Bob quietly continues to work on the truck, trying to mill over the past few hours in his mind.

Cell Block

Duke stands ready, watching for any movement. He began to whistle the theme from The A-Team

Civie Helo

Ortega stands, still shooken. His hands wrapping the M-16 tightly. "What the fuck are these things?" He says aloud.

Garrage

"Gawd-Damn." Said Wallace. " 'S lookin' like you fella's can hold yer' own. Eh?"

Balcony
Hockey stay's chilly, his cheek on his weapon.

In the motel-
Lt. Malone and her team wheeled the dolly with the communications unit out the back door of the motel.

On the motel balcony-
"Thank you, Sergeant," replied Captain Lereux into his throat microphone. "That's fine. Airman Phillips, you are cleared to return to duty and relieve Sergeant McCain at the helicopter."

"I'm on my way, sir," answered Phillips. He and Zorie Spooner emerged from the motel room.

"Take care of yourself," said Zorie. "I'm going to go see the captain." She headed off to the north while the medic went down the stairs.

On the west side of the motel-
Lt. Malone locked the back door of the motel behind her and continued helping the others push the dolly towards the only open stairway, on the southwest corner of the motel. They arrived just as Phillips reached the bottom.

Right at that moment, a loud explosion came from the field to the west of the staircase, followed by two more in rapid succession in a line leading north. "The Claymores!" shouted Malanowski.

Then a single ghoul ran out of the grass near the northwest staircase, turning when it saw the group of people gathered around the other stairs and running towards them with its jaw hanging open hungrily and its eyes twin orbs of pure hate. It was less than twenty yards away and closing fast.

Malone reacted calmly and professionally. "Incoming!" she shouted. Alexandria Mikhalin, however, shivered at the sight, but she quickly recovered.

Malanowski screamed in terror, his mind overwhelmed. He knew this thing should not exist and sobbed uncontrollably. Phillips also panicked, unable to deal with the image of the horrific creature as it charged towards him. In his mind, he knew he was doomed. He too wept like a baby.

(Lewis, roll Sanity. If you fail, lose 1d10 Sanity, but treat any result of more than 8 as 8 since you've already lost 2 points for seeing a zombie recently. If you lose 5 or more Sanity, roll Idea - if you succeed, you go temporarily insane.)

On the motel balcony-
Zorie Spooner had just reached Justin Hockey's position when she heard the explosions. She turned just in time to see the zombie spring from the high grass and shrieked with alarm, but she did not give in to her fears.

Captain Lereux and Carlos Duran ran to the northwest corner of the balcony when the Claymores went off, their rifles at the ready. The captain's eyes bulged, but he was only startled briefly. Duran did not seem adversely affected.

(Hockey, roll Sanity.)

On the motel's roof-
Bobby Sheen turned when he heard the mines detonate, and he gasped when he saw the ravenous zombie. He dropped his rifle, mentally stunned. He clenched his eyes shut, knowing he was doomed. All he could think was that he wished there were a woman up on the roof with him. Any woman, it didn't matter which one or who was watching. He just wanted one last screw before he went down.

Thayer also spun around at the sound of the blasts, but he was used to the sight of these things and one more didn't faze him. "Yee-haw!" he roared. "It's killin' time!" He shouldered his rifle, took aim at the head of the creature below, and squeezed off a shot. The shot struck home and took it out. "Oh, yeah! Who's bad? I'm bad!"

(Sam Black, roll Sanity.)

In a downstairs motel room-
Cole cut the rope in half with his knife and began tying the chair legs to it. He had finished two of them when he heard the three explosions, followed shortly afterwards by a single rifle shot. He could not see what was going on from inside the room.

At the helicopter-
Erica Spears, Sergeant McCain, and Airman Ortega all heard the Claymores going off, but the helicopter and the motel both blocked their field of vision.

On the roof of the garage-
"What the hell was that?" said Samantha when the Claymores were tripped. She turned to the west, but with the motel in the way she couldn't see what was happening. "That didn't sound good!"

In the garage-
Alice finished repairing her rifle. Wyatt was as good as new, though it currently had only a partial magazine loaded.

"Jimmy can watch," said David. "He might learn a few things. I wouldn't recommend that he participate, of course. No offense, kid, she's just too much woman for you to handle at your tender age."

Mitchell wiped the sweat from his face with a rag, smirking behind it so nobody could see. "Well, the place did get blown to hell, Wallace," he said. "We lost a bunch of people too. I'm glad you made it back here and are watching out for us. We'll have your truck up and running in maybe an hour and forty minutes. Meanwhile, if you see any trouble coming, be ready to close that garage door."

The sound of the distant explosions carried through the open door. They came from the west, but Wallace couldn't see the other side of the motel.

On the roof of the diner-
"Look," said Azadeh as she finished cleaning the Grease gun, "I'm willing to give this weapon up, but only if I can get some more ammo for my rifle. Or, failing that, another rifle and ammo to go with it. What I've got left just won't last that long at the rate things are going. See anything?" She swapped out her rifle's magazine and topped off the one she had just removed.

Through his scope, Luke was able to make out the huge pancake in the distance that used to be Brownson. A little to the west of it he saw a large group of about a hundred people slowly approaching. They were about two and a half miles away, and he wouldn't have been able to see them without his scope. At their current pace, he estimated that they'd arrive in half an hour.

He also saw some movement on the highway. There were a few more of the creatures roaming among the wrecked vehicles that he had been told about, but none of them were any closer than a mile off. A couple of them were feasting on a dead body, as was a dog. Another dog trotted up to them, sniffing around. It looked alive as far as he could tell, though lean and hungry. It sniffed the first dog, but quickly backed away from it. The dog and the ghouls ignored it, however. The new dog circled around to the other side of the body and started to chew on it. Then Luke heard the blasts far to the west.

In the warehouse-
Baldwin tucked the computer under his arm and headed downstairs to the reception area. Beth and Kerry followed him.

In the reception area-
"I hope so too," Bo told Joe. "Yeah, I'm good to go. It won't be any picnic here in the ground, either, of course. If there's room for me in that chopper I wouldn't miss this ride for anything." He glanced at Stephanie.

Willie left a bag with two soda bottles on the desk. "Here, you can take this with you on the helicopter." He took out a third bottle and set it down. "This one's for the people staying in this room. I've got one more bottle here. Where are the others?"

"Most of them are in the kitchen," said Michael. He pointed out the door.

Willie nodded and entered the hall.

Baldwin, Beth, and Kerry came down the stairs and through the open gate. "I found the laptops," said Baldwin. "Will this one do?"

Stephanie looked up from her typing. "Great! Just put it in the empty carrying case over there and close it up so Javier can bring it back with him. I'll hide this one under my lab coat when it's time for us to go."

Baldwin packed the new computer up in the carrying case. "Look, I'm sorry about the doc getting hurt and breaking that computer earlier. I just lost it back there."

"Don't worry about it. Things are turning out all right. Brigetta's going to be okay, and the computer's working again now. And if I hadn't gone to the motel, I wouldn't have found out some very important things. I might have been killed if I'd stayed here, too."

"And without Stephanie's fine shooting, I'd be dead now," said Mr. Foo.

"Thank you. Anyhow, from what little I've heard about Horst, I think we're better off with him dead."

Kerry nodded numbly. "You're the one who killed Horst?" she asked.

"Yeah," said Baldwin. "I killed his cracker ass."

"Then I can't thank you enough. You have no idea what that maniac put me through. I can't believe I've survived everything that's happened to me. I just had a dog almost chomp me in half. I gave it both barrels and it still kept coming."

Beth nodded. "We've had a couple of dogs attack," she said. "They're reanimated just like the humans."

"Stephanie and I saw one earlier," said Jenny, "from the motel roof."

"That's right," said Stephanie. "There were some rats that attacked the people who were exploring this facility, too, also reanimated. Hmm. Those rats had been eating a body that had been reanimated and then shot in the head, right? I bet the rats got sick and died from it, just like someone who gets bitten. Probably much faster too, considering they're smaller and they actually ingested this stuff. That's really going to mess up the ecosystem. There's no telling how far this could go. Still, we've got a huge problem. If animals feed on the dead, they'll die and come back too. And there are hundreds of corpses lying around up on the surface!"

In the kitchen-
Lt. Blanco still could not focus on the task at hand, but with Sally's able assistance Dr. Hausmann was able to make good progress on Lynne's splint.

"I saw all right," said Kimberly. "That rat she was shooting at was moving fast and nipping at her heels. It could have happened to anyone. Besides, can you think of any other reason for Lynne to have this?" She held up the suppressor.

"Beats me," said Rosie. "Maybe she stole it. She's not a killer, though."

"Stole it from whom, then? Look, all I know is that when she wakes up, she's got some splainin' to do."

Willie entered, carrying a bottle of soda. "You ladies thirsty?" he asked.

In the office-
While Max watched attentively, Jim Kerr finished reading the journal:

December 10th. Airman Benedict was found hanging in one of the cells. Not sure when he deserted his post as his partner had fallen asleep on watch.

December 20th. Airman Houbart was found missing today and could be found nowhere in the base. The Chamber remains closed.

December 21st. Grey has sent us a team of trackers to find Houbart. They think he tried to escape on foot to one of the nearby towns. If so he could be miles away by now. God pray for his soul if he's told anyone about what he's learned.

December 23rd. Houbart has been found north of here near the radar complex. Apparently he broke his leg falling into some gopher hole and died of exposure. They say coyotes had dug him out of the snow and were consuming him.

January 18 1962. Received orders from Grey to prepare for transfer of the base and to wrap up Operation Deep Mole. Informed we are to pack up essential belongings and are to await our replacements. I can't say I am unhappy to be leaving. Not sure who is to follow up or what purpose they may have.

January 23rd. Have informed Grey that base prepared for closure. Am awaiting pick up with remaining staff. Everyone very tense but relieved this operation is finally over.
Close the chamber down. Where the fuck is our relief?

In the cell block-
Ellen Cody shook her head as she walked past Duke. She had grown up on the A-Team. She could still scarcely believe that Mr. Foo had lived through similar exciting adventures. He reminded her of Hannibal now that she thought about it. Yup, he's on the jazz, all right, she thought. She passed through the door at the end of the hall and into the shower room.

As Duke watched the rat, it scuttled over to Debbie's body and started to nibble on her arm.

In the prisoners' common area-
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" said Randall. "That's a bit dangerous, isn't it? That bullet could ricochet and hit one of us. Besides, we may need to lock that door again later to keep something nasty out - or in. Why don't we see if we can find someone else who can pick a lock first? Will an extra ten or fifteen minutes cause the food to spoil?"

"Well," said Gary, "I suppose not. Thirty might be pushing it, though. If there's no other way, I could always get my tools from my truck, or some of David's hardware supplies, and take this thing apart. That'll take time, though, and going up there might be risky too. Let's head back and see if we can find someone else to help us." He led Randall back the way they came.

In the prison showers-
Ellen met Gary and Randall as they entered from the common area. "You're Gary, right?" she asked. When he nodded, she continued. "I was hoping to find you. The helicopter landed topside and they're refueling it now. The scientists' group is going to be leaving soon, and that rifle you've got belonged to one of them. They'd like to have it back."

"Well, this is the only gun I've got," he said. "Still, maybe I can find another rifle, or at least a shotgun. You might be able to help me out too - and help all of us out. I need to access the generator so I can power the fridge and keep our food fresh, but it's behind a locked door. You know anything about locks?"

"No, but Mr. Foo might. It seems like he can do pretty much anything."

In a downstairs motel room -

Cole
continues his work. If they need him, they'll call him. Afterall, it's only the claymore and one shot fired.

In the garage -

"Will you people cut this shit out?" Bob grunts as he works on the truck "There is an apocalypse in progress, if you failed to notice."

"If your dick jumps out of your pants at an inappropriate time." He scolds "You'll end as zombiefood."

"Now, if you wouldn't mind, this work needs concentration, so either get a room or cut it out."

On the roof of the diner -

"The longer I think about it, the less likely it becomes that I'm actually leaving here." Luke replies to Azadeh as he got up "Chopper will be packed. I never liked the city anyway."

"HEADS UP! One big group, 100-ish west from Brownson, 2.5 miles out." He yells at the top of his lungs "And several on the highway, including small animals."

"The pack of hundred are a half an hour out." he then said to Azadeh as he lowered his voice and turned to see what the blasts and gunshot was about.

On the Southwest corner of the motel, ground level:

Lewis saw the creature and paused as he stared deep into its eyes. His mind snapped as he saw the creature. But counting quickly to himself he managed to maintain control. Lewis then pulled his Berretta out of his holster and turning his back to Malone said, "Lt, I think we need to get to the new comm room now. I will take the back lets move it people!!!!"

Outside the garage, near helicopter:
McCain heard the explosion and screams over his radio and grabbing his mike he spoke into it saying, "Sir, permission to leave Ortega here and come back to motel to take over command of my troopers?"

In the Garage:
Alice ejected the magizine on the carbine despite still having 3 bullets in it. This magizine she pocketed with the rest in case she needed 3 bullets later on. She then reloaded a fresh clip of 6 bullets in the rifle. She then walked over to David and said to him, "Baby, you know your the one I want now and always." She kissed him full on the mouth. Taking time for air she walked over to Bob and said, "Today is the end of the world as we know it. The world is never going to be the same. I get my pleasures when and where I please. You don't like it, well here is a pistol (she pulled Rita's dirty .38 revolver and offered it to him) why don't you kill yourself now. Otherwise shut the hell up and let me enjoy what could be the last day I live on this planet."

In the Office:
Jim sat back having read the journal. He scratched Max on his head and thought about what he had read and learned so far. He sat up as an idea occured to him. "Now that is funny, he said, I wonder what others would say about this idea." He got up to go but paused at the door wondering where everyone would be now as some minutes had passed since he had seen anyone.

(OOC: Just a small update for now. Once Stompie posts I'll make a larger one.)

Steve, as I mentioned in the OOC thread, Thayer already killed the zombie that you wanted Lewis to shoot at, so you should edit your post - Lewis may do something else if you wish. You may also have McCain and Jim Kerr take an action this round.)

One of the three bullets in Alice's rifle was already in the chamber since it's a semiautomatic, so only two are left in the partial magazine and seven are loaded now. It also appears that the Winchester is a side-loader, which would mean bullets are loaded one at a time rather than in magazines.)

At the helicopter-
"Granted, Sergeant!" replied Lereux quickly. "We could sure use your help over here. Phillips can go join Ortega later."

In the garage-
"Jeez," muttered Mitchell, glaring at Alice. "We don't have to die today. The faster we get this tanker running, the sooner we can get out of here and the better our chances. If you're not going to help, at least don't distract the guys. You two can do whatever you want for all I care - after the repairs are done."

David grinned like a cat with a mouthful of canaries. "Don't worry, sweetcakes," he said to Alice. "We can 'get a room' once I'm finished here. Looking forward to that might even make me work faster."

On the roof of the diner-
Azadeh nodded and followed Luke's gaze, but neither of them could see what was happening with the motel in the way. "Those could have been mines going off," she said. "Three of them, one right after another. The military had been planting them around the motel earlier."

In the reception area-
"I hope so too, Javier," said Stephanie. "The captain will probably be too busy to examine the computer, but if he does you can just put all the blame on me and say I must have switched them when you weren't looking."

She smiled at Bo, who smiled back at her. "Yes," he said to Joe, "not having to be alone makes everything a lot less difficult."

In the office-
Jim Kerr wondered if the "radar complex" to the north that was mentioned in the journal might be the site of the PMS compound.

In the Garage -

"Listen here, missy. It appears you fail to appreciate my work and that's just fine. See, I won't be the one stuck here when the chopper leaves, so it isn't really my problem." Bob says from under the truck, wrestling with a stubborn vice "But I can't leave the others to fend for themselves just because you're a stubborn oversexed cow thinking of nothing but yourself while others out there risk their lives to keep you safe."

"Now, if you don't get that gun out of my face, I'll shove an umbrella up your ass and open it..." he grunts angrily.

On the roof of the diner -

"Nothing we can do from here. Besides, they've got more firepower than everyone else here combined." Luke answers Azadeh "All we can do is have some faith in them for now."
