West of the motel-
Corporal Alanen placed and armed the third Claymore, then turned around to head back for the motel.
Phillips and
Thayer finished barricading the northwest stairway.
From his position on the balcony,
Ortega could see
four people running his way from the west through the high grass. They were getting dangerously close to
Alanen, and
Ortega could tell that they were grievously wounded.
(
Ortega, roll Sanity. If you fail, you lose 1d10 Sanity points. If you lose 5 or more, roll Idea to see if you go temporarily insane (which happens if you succeed). If you do not go temporarily insane, you get one round to attack.
If any others are going to attack the zombies in the grass, they must succeed at a Spot Hidden roll first. If they do succeed, they must also roll Sanity. Once you succeed at the roll, you have seen all four zombies and can target any of them from now on without having to roll again. They are currently about 70 yards from the motel and closing fast.)
On the roof of the motel-
Black and
Sheen both see the head of the zombie that
Black just shot explode.
(Both of them are capable of shooting at the zombies in the field, provided they make their Spot Hidden rolls and do not go insane.)
In the comm room-
"You may return to your duties,
Sergeant McCain," said
Lt. Malone. "I believe that
Sergeant Black is conversant in French. If you think you can spare him for a few minutes without compromising our security, send him down. Otherwise, tell me and I'll think of something else."
(
McCain may roll Spot Hidden this round if he goes out the west exit, but he may not fire this round because he will take too much time going outside.
Note that it will take someone a full round to go up or down the ladder leading to the roof, and the bottom is on the east side of the motel.)
North of the T-Bone-
Hockey's burst tore off the last creature's leg and it fell down in the dirt road. Amazingly, it kept crawling towards the people standing in the road to its south.
Kimberly took a shot at its head,
missing by the slimmest of margins.
Lereux took a shot as well,
narrowly missing.
Duran took careful aim and
fired,
scoring a direct hit that
finished it off.
"Good work, people!" said
Lereux.
Zorie Spooner approached
Kimberly. "Let me take a look at that wound," she said, removing her bandages and gasping. "You were bitten!"
At this, the captain whirled around and trained his rifle on
Kimberly's head, taking a step away from her.
"Whoa, what are you doing?" asked
Kimberly.
"You've been bitten," he said. "That means you're infected."
At the garage-
David and
Jimmy continued to work on the truck's coupling. "Hmm," said
David. "The truck's going to be too heavy for us to push, but if we can do some preliminary repairs we ought to be able to drive it back into the garage. It's only sticking out by a little, so it won't have to go far. Then we'll be able to close the door."
Alice continued standing watch and didn't detect any threats.
Since
Joe Barring made no move to get out of the truck,
Baldwin shrugged and drove in a tight circle through the parking lot so that the truck was facing north. "You know," he said to
Erica Spears, "you probably should have just landed the chopper here. It would have been a lot easier than lugging the fuel up the road and refueling it there. It's not too late to go get it and fly it back here, now that you know it's safe to land."
"I don't know about that," she said. "What if these guys impound my chopper? Let's just get that fuel loaded and find some more ammo - or better yet, some rifles."
"We barely survived Brownson. It'll take twice as long to fuel your bird the rest of the way, and more of those things were chasing us all the way back."
"
Maybe you're right," said
Erica. "Damn, I should have just landed here in the first place and saved us a trip. Now we have to go back and get it."
Baldwin stopped the truck in front of the garage. "Let's stock up first, though." He left the truck idling and got out.
East of the diner-
Samantha sprang towards the weapon crates and grabbed
Earl's double-barrelled 20 gauge shotgun from one of them.
Beth, alerted to the commotion, climbed down the ladder from the roof. "Don't do it!" she cried.
"Why not?" said
Samantha. "We're all gonna die anyway."
"Maybe, but don't go throwing your life away. When you die, make it count for something. At least stop and think for a few minutes first. You can always blow your brains out later."
Samantha calmed down and placed the shotgun back in the crate. She wrapped her arms around
Beth and began to sob.
Mitchell breathed a sigh of relief and went back to unjamming his own shotgun. He
expertly cleared the jam. "Anything else need fixing around here?" he asked.
"Yeah," said
Beth. "A couple of the guys are fixing
Wallace's truck."
Mitchell nodded. "I think I'll go help them out."
In the warehouse-
Rosie helped the
Foos down the stairs and into the warehouse as
Azadeh stood up and began slowly walking. "Ooh," she said, looking in the one remaining weapons crate containing the grenade launcher and hand grenades.
"
Miss Samimi," said
Mr. Foo. "I'm glad to see you survived the explosion."
Azadeh looked up. "
Mr. Foo!" she said. "I've seen better days, but Allah willing I'll see better days again. It looks like you've seen some action yourself."
"I had an argument with a grenade. By some astounding miracle, I won. This was right after I killed
Buzz, the skinheads' leader, and stopped him from setting off the explosives. Unfortunately, they went off later anyway."
"Well, it's a good thing you did. If it had gone off earlier, a lot more people would have died. Probably including me."
Mr. Foo looked curiously at
Kerry as she stuffed her face. "And who is this young lady?"
"Her name is
Kerry," said
Rosie. "It turns out there's some sort of secret prison down that flight of stairs and through a gate, and the others found her locked in a cell, half starved to death. I'm afraid she's not very talkative, though."
"And this place?"
"
Hammond,
Earl, and
Rita had been running a criminal enterprise from the T-Bone. They're all dead now. The others found a whole bunch of guns down here, most of which they brought upstairs or kept with them."
Mr. Foo looked closely at
Kerry. "Perhaps I could try hypnosis. It may help her relax and deal with what she's been through."
Rosie looked at him with wonder. "You know hypnosis?"
"It only works if the subject is willing and cooperative, and I'm no master, but I can give it a good try." He took out a silver pocketwatch and dangled it in front of
Kerry's face. The young woman seemed fascinated by the shiny object as it swung before her eyes. "I want you to relax,
Kerry. Clear your mind of all distractions."
Kerry stared blankly at him, but
this blank stare was clearly different from her usual one. She slowed down her breathing and truly seemed calm for the first time.
"She sleeping?" whispered
Mrs. Foo, as if afraid to wake her.
Her husband shook his head and smiled. "No, no, she's perfectly conscious. I could command her to sleep now, but I think we need her sensible and talking."
In the reception area-
"Let's see if we can plug the laptop in somewhere," suggested
Stephanie. "That way we can conserve battery power and keep it charged." She
quickly found a socket located in the wall behind the desk. "Ah, there we go. As long as the generator's on, we can plug it in. Hmm. These old sockets are the 2-hole variety. I hope the laptop plug isn't the 3-prong kind." She pulled it out of the case. "
Yes!" she said. She plugged the computer into the socket and turned it on.
(Note that when you roll Spot Hidden to search down here, you should specify where specifically you are searching and, if you know, what you're looking for.)
"Where's
Sean?"
Stephanie asked as she waited for the laptop to boot up. From
Dr. Hausmann's pained expression she could tell the answer wasn't good. "Oh, no..."
"That vile
Hammond murdered him," said the doctor. "I have to admit I lost it for a while back there."
"He gave his life in the line of duty," said
Bo. "He did everything he could to help make sure you two get to Omaha. He died a hero."
Stephanie patted
Dr. Hausmann on the shoulder. "Don't feel ashamed," she said. "I don't know what I would have done if I'd lost you."
"You would have done what you had to do and finished my work," said
Dr. Hausmann. "You're the steadiest person I've ever met. I know I can depend on you."
"That's why you put that back door into your computer. And the text file you left on the desktop. 'If you're reading this, I must be dead...'"
"Well, I'm not. But if anything happens to me, you need to know what I know. I put those things on mein computer while you went to the garage, and I didn't have a chance to tell you. I had hoped you'd be clever enough to figure it out, and I was right. If I don't make it, I know you can complete this."
"Oh,
Brigetta, don't talk like that. Besides, I'm not half the genius you are."
"We must be realistic. The world is not the same place it was yesterday. And you are very smart and resourceful,
Stephanie. I know you have what it takes."
"Well, I guess so. I'm discovering all sorts of things about myself and my capabilities I never knew before."
In the kitchen-
Sally tried a sink's faucet. To her surprise, water flowed freely from it after a brief splutter. However, it had the unmistakeable reddish-brown tinge of rust. "Well, at least that's something," she said, shutting off the tap, "but I wouldn't drink that without boiling it first. I wonder what's through there?"
Sally pointed at the door at the rear of the kitchen.
"There's only one way to find out," said
Robert. He approached the door while the others covered him. Then he opened it and looked inside. On the other side of the door was a large pantry stocked with cans of food with old-style labels. Several more rats were in the room, but they scurried into the darkness as soon as the door opened.
