OOC- Since Gonzalez hasn't posted in a long time, I'll take temporary control of his characters as needed. For now his characters won't do anything on their own initiative, but his military characters will obey orders given to them by their superiors.
IC-
West of the motel-
Airman Igor Malanowski emerged from the motel's back door and looked out over the field, but
he could detect no movement.
Thayer also surveyed the field looking for something else to kill and
seemed to spot something. He
let loose with another burst,
connecting with
one round in
his target's leg and
causing serious damage.
"It's not your fault, Sarge," said
Phillips. "Those things took him down, and
Thayer's grenade killed him. And if that didn't kill him, that other grenade must have." He squinted into the field and
saw what Thayer was shooting. "What the hell are you doing, man? You're shooting
Alanen! Hey, he's moving! I don't believe it, but he's still alive! Good thing you only hit his severed leg. I've got to go help him! Someone cover me!" Without waiting to see if anyone did, he sprinted towards the field.
On the roof of the motel-
The last of the creatures went down after
Black blew its head off. He and
Sheen saw
Phillips take off for the field of grass.
In the comm room-
"We're going nowhere, Airman," said
Malone to
Ortega. "We have a job to do." She got on the radio. "
Lewis , it's best to go easy on the grenades anyway.
Malanowski, what do you see out there?"
"I can't see a thing, ma'am," he replied.
"This is
Phillips ma'am," reported the medic. "The enemy have been eliminated, and
Alanen is alive, repeat, alive! He's lost a leg and a lot of blood, but he's still got a chance!"
"Ma'am," said
Mikhalin, "what if he's
not alive? What if
Mr. Goldberg was right?"
"While I respect your opinion," answered
Malone, "
I don't see any possibility of that. Even if he were right,
Alanen could still be alive."
"
Elizabeth," said
Angela Blanco over the radio, "I managed to get through to a
Major Roland de Wolf III at NATO HQ. I can confirm that it was NATO that dropped the bomb on Istanbul. I almost convinced him that using nukes is a bad idea, but he doesn't know we are who we say we are or how we got onto his comm network. He's getting someone who can speak English now."
"Thank you,
Angela. Once they do I'll take it from there."
More running footsteps could be heard over the communication lines, this time approaching. A woman's voice spoke, with a British accent and quite out of breath: "Right," she huffed, "this is
Captain Miranda Reynolds. Whatever it is, make it quick. Our perimeter was breached a few minutes ago and I ought to be out there shooting those blighters."
"
Lieutenant Elizabeth Malone, USAF, ma'am. We have information from Diego Garcia that populated areas that have been nuked have seen increases in the rate of infection. Our working theory is that the radiation hastens its spread. We need you to notify everyone you can not to use nuclear weapons to try to contain the infection."
"So the major said.
But why the bloody hell should I believe you? You could be anyone! You are not authorized to use this channel!"
South of the motel-
Cole heard the crack of the sniper rifle and saw the creature that he had just missed go down.
North of the T-Bone-
"A good man just died," said
Captain Lereux, "that's what happened. Beyond that I'm not sure." Then he heard
Phillips over the radio, brightened a bit, and responded. "He's alive? Do what you can for him, but exercise caution. Remember that he has been exposed to the pathogen."
Lereux looked off to the north for any sign of traffic, and
his eyes widened with alarm. "All personnel, be advised! We have a large mob incoming from the north! There are dozens of them, over half a mile off but moving slowly. ETA approximately six to eight minutes. I want them stopped by any means necessary!" He planted the warning sign in the middle of the road where he stood. "This'll have to do. I suggest you fall back and get ready.
I bet they followed your truck back here." He retreated to the south.
(The large group of zombies is approximately a thousand yards to the north. Only
Black can fire without a range penalty, and he can get off five shots before the next update (as can anyone with a rate of fire of 1). Now that
Lereux has spotted them and alerted everyone, anyone with a clear line of sight on the north road can see them without having to roll Spot Hidden.
Black and
Sheen also get a bonus to hit from their laser sights equal to 20% of their skill, rounded down. They didn't get this earlier because there were obstructions between them and the target, such as the field of grass. When shooting at the zombies from the north, they do get this bonus.
Black's effective skill is 92+18=110%, or 105% for a headshot, so he will only miss on a malfunction, which happens on a 98 or higher with the Barrett.
Sheen's effective skill without a range penalty would be 82+16=98%, or 93% for a headshot. His M24 only malfunctions on a 100, but it also has a rate of fire of 1/2, so he can only get 3 shots off this round. It also doesn't have as much range, so this round he will fire at half skill if
Black orders him to or Gonzalez chooses to fire - from the following round onwards he will fire at normal skill. If he fires this round, his skill is 82 / 2 + 16=57%, or 52% for a headshot.
Cole cannot see the zombies from his position on the south of the motel, and neither can anyone on the west side. He can spend this round moving to a new position from which he can, however.
Duran and
Hockey can shoot at them, but they have massive range penalties (less than half skill) for now.
Luke has a scope and bipod on his M-14, so he could fire five times at half skill this round (80 / 2 = 40%, or 35% for a headshot). Starting the round after, he will get to use his full skill.
The zombies aren't close enough for anyone to roll Sanity yet. I'll keep a running tally of how many are killed.
Reloading an automatic weapon by swapping out a magazine takes one of a character's five possible rounds of fire. For a revolver, giving up one round of fire allows you to load two bullets (or use a speedloader). Likewise, you can load up to two shells in a shotgun by sacrificing one round of fire. Of course, the zombies are nowhere near close enough for anything but a rifle at the moment.)
At the concrete divider-
Duran glanced at
Hockey with interest. "You're pretty perceptive," he said quietly. "Keep a close eye on
Cole, and be wary." His eyes scanned the highway in both directions, but
didn't see anything to catch his attention.
When
Lereux alerted them of the new threat to the north, he turned to look and could clearly see the horde in the distance. So could
Hockey. "Let's hold our fire for now," said
Duran. "We need to wait until they get closer, or we'll just be wasting our ammo."
Lereux arrived at the divider and joined his men. "Good idea, Airman," he said, looking back to the north.
At the garage-
"We'll definitely need to create some kind of distraction," said
Kimberly, "but I don't know if we have enough people to divide ourselves into four groups, and just firing at the compound would have limited effectiveness.
Trooper Richards and I were discussing this earlier, and he mentioned the possibility of blowing up their meth lab. It's far enough from where we believe the captives are being held. When the lab goes up, we could then secure them while the skinheads are busy dealing with the fire. If we're really lucky, they won't even realize they're under attack - meth labs are volatile, and sometimes explode without any outside interference. The trick would be getting someone inside to cause the explosion."
"We may not have any choice but to damage their defenses a little," said
Baldwin, "but if we pull this off we can repair them later. I'll go with you to get some guns and ammo."
"Me too," said
Erica Spears. She joined
Baldwin and
Alice outside.
"Keep an eye out for shotgun shells," said
Kimberly.
"And I can use some 9mm bullets," added
David.
"Do you know where
Dr. Blanco went?" asked
Zorie Spooner. "She said something about being downstairs."
"Yeah, there are stairs in what used to be the liquor closet," said
Mitchell, pointing. "Through that door and down the hall."
"Thanks." She led
Kimberly across the garage and to the stairs.
In front of the diner-
As
Baldwin led
Alice and
Erica back to the parking lot in front of the diner, they noticed the commotion and looked to the north. "That laptop will have to wait," he said. "We need those guns fast! Let's go!" He quickened his pace to a run, and they soon arrived at the diner's blown-out front. "That looks like it's where the edge of the roof collapsed. Man, look at all those bodies. Looks like they've been shot in the head, so at least they won't be getting back up again. Let's see what they've got. They sure won't be needing it any more."
East of the diner-
Luke reached to the east side of the diner just as
Beth called down from the roof: "We've got more of them coming from the north! A lot more!"
Samantha finally began to calm down. "What have I done?" she said. "I can't believe I almost..." She suddenly became aware of what was going on around her. "Quick, give me a rifle!"
Jenny Cooper looked her in the eyes and nodded. "Yeah, you're okay now. Just don't do anything like that again! You gave us all quite a scare." She handed her the M-16. "Here, you'd better take this one. You're a much better shot than I am." She next unslung the Mini 14 and held it ready.
In the warehouse-
"Perhaps I should ask her some questions while she's under hypnosis," said
Mr. Foo. "If she knows anything about the PMS it could be important, not to mention how she could have gotten from the compound to here. I did not want to, for she has been through so much and there is a risk to her mental health, but this information could potentially save lives, including her own."
"I think you should do it," said
Azadeh. "It is worth the risk to get this information."
"Yes,
I'm sure you are right. I shall endeavor to be careful.
If I begin at the beginning and go slowly, we will get the most out of her while minimizing the danger. He sat across from
Kerry and met her gaze. "
Kerry, I need you to remember some things and tell them to us. Start by telling me about yourself. Who are you? Where are you from?"
"My name is
Kerry Pierce," she said. "I'm from Chicago, and I'm a sociologist working with underprivileged youth in the city. I have recently obtained my Masters in sociology from the University of Chicago."
"Who are the important people in your life? Are you married? Do you have a boyfriend?"
"No, I'm single. I did have a boyfriend, but we broke up. He's a lawyer in Chicago. My family is also from Chicago. My parents still live there, but I have no brothers or sisters. My best friend is my roommate,
Debbie Woodson."
"You're a long way from Chicago,
Kerry. How did you get here?"
"
Debbie and I went out west to do some rock climbing. I'm an expert climber. First we went to South Dakota, and we just climbed Devil's Tower last week. Then we headed south.
"We stopped at a bar in the town of Deadwood. That's where we met that horrible man,
Horst. He started hitting on me, but then he got angry when he found out
Debbie was my friend, because she's black. He was spewing all kinds of hate until the bartender made him leave. I thought that was the end of it, and we went back to our hotel rooms. In the morning we left town, heading south for Colorado.
"While we were on the road our tire went flat and we had to pull over. A van pulled up behind us and these men got out and offered to help. But when they got close, they sprayed us with something and we passed out. When we woke up, we were in the back of the van, tied up, gagged, and blindfolded. Oh, God..."
Kerry suddenly stopped speaking and blinked, looking around with fear in her eyes.
"It's okay," said
Mr. Foo, "you're fine now." But the spell was broken.
In the reception area-
Angela Blanco listened to
Dr. Hausmann's explanation while she also followed
Lt. Malone's conversation with NATO on the private channel they had set up. "
Elizabeth," she said, "maybe I can get through to her."
"Go ahead and give it a try," said
Malone.
"
Captain Reynolds, I'm
Lt. Angela Blanco. Everything
Lieutenant Malone and I have said is true. Please, you must notify everyone with their fingers on the button not to launch any more nukes! Countless lives are at stake."
"Very well," said
Miranda Reynolds. "
I believe you. I think I can get
Major de Wolf to agree. Thank you for getting in touch with us. Where exactly are you, and how did you manage it?"
"We're at some rest stop in southwestern Nebraska, ma'am. There's an old CIA listening post out here that's hooked into an antique Cold War communications network, probably a lot like your own. If you can reach others through your network in Europe, we can prevent more tragedies like Istanbul."
"Will do. Nebraska, you said? One of our chaps is down your end, bloke named
Walters. He's a captain in the RAF. You wouldn't happen to have him around, would you?"
Stephanie continued her furious typing while following
Dr. Hausmann's story. She was able to multitask with no problems or delays.
Bo also managed to both follow the conversation and keep watch on the hallway.
In the barracks-
"Hold on," said
Lynne. "We haven't searched this place thoroughly yet. Maybe there's something else in here." She poked around and
found a deck of old cards behind a locker. On the each card was a black-and-white picture of a nude woman. She smirked. "Sure, they were hot then, but I but they're all wrinkly by now."
Next she examined the photograph near the bunk and flipped it over. "Hey, there's something written on the back!" she said. She read it out loud. "
Tony, looking forward to when you come home, XO,
Mary." She looked under the bed and beneath the mattress. "Let's see what else I can find. Hey, what's this?" She pulled out a letter that had been hidden under the mattress and showed it to the others.
"I'll read it to everyone," said
Robert. "Dear
Mary,
Thank you for your recent letter. I am looking forward to seeing you as soon as my deployment here in Korea is over. I am well though I hope this mission will soon be over. Many of the guys are feeling stressed out and are also looking forward to going home, but we have to wait for orders. Thank you for your picture. I have it near my bed and the other guys tease me for having such a pretty girl waiting for me back home but they just wish they had a girl as sweet as you. One thing for sure, I am planning to give up this Army life for something more normal. I am tired of it. It's not the danger but, well, maybe I will tell you about it one day.
Love you,
Tony"

Duke and
Jim Kerr, roll Idea.)
In the bathroom-
Sally went into the bathroom and tried the faucet on one of the sinks. "Yup, the water works in here too!" she called. She looked around the room, and
noticed some graffiti on the wall of one of the toilet stalls. "Hey, look at this. It says 'The demons are below and they are hungry.' Sounds pretty nutty." She turned back to the sink and shut off the rusty water, then shrank back as she noticed a red substance burbling up slowly from the drain. "That...looks like blood!"
