"Shit." Said Hockey. "Thats an understatement, Cole."

"Looks like I don't have much of a choice, do I?"

West of the motel-
Incredibly, the creatures dragged their maimed bodies over to Alanen and began to feast upon him once more. Ortega ran away from the field and into the motel, the safest place he knew, while McCain cackled madly.

"Sergeant McCain!" roared Captain Lereux's voice over the radio; he apparently had recognized his voice. "Pull your head out of your ass and give me a sitrep! NOW!"

Thayer fired a burst from his M-16, but the bullets went over the ghouls' heads.

Phillips took more careful aim at one of the creatures' heads and fired again. His shot was on target but did little damage. "Phillips here, sir!" he said quickly into the radio. "Four hostiles took down Alanen, and his team and McCain went nuts! Thayer lobbed a grenade at the enemy and took out one, probably killed Alanen too. Ortega bugged out and McCain freaked out. I downed one more and wounded another."

(Lewis may fire another two shots from his Beretta.)

On the roof of the motel-
Bobby Sheen still wasn't firing. Apparently he couldn't see the targets in the field.

In the comm room-
"That was no Claymore!" said Alexandria Mikhalin. "That sounded like a grenade!"

Sam Black came in and tried to understand the man's speech, but the guy was too distracted from whatever was happening at his location. All he could get was the man's name: Major Roland de Wolf III. Then he stopped speaking and the sound of his running footsteps came over the microphone, though the line stayed open.

"You'd better get back outside," said Malone. "I'll think of something else, but you've got more important things to do."

Then they heard the chatter over the radio. Lereux came on the line again: "Sergeant Black, I'm placing you in charge of our defense until further notice."

Ortega burst into the room, his eyes wild with panic. He huddled in a corner.

"Airman!" shouted Malone. "Get a grip on yourself and get back out there!"

(Black can go out the west door and look at the field this round, or he can go out the east door and climb back up the ladder, but that will leave him no time to look around. He cannot fire this round either way.)

North of the T-Bone-
Lereux shook his head. "Whatever happened to military discipline?" he said to himself. Then he turned to Duran. "How's it going?"

"Done, sir," said Duran, as he finished mining the road.

"Good work. At least someone around here knows what he's doing."

"Thanks, Wallace," said Kimberly, "but I'm not dead yet. In fact, I don't really feel sick at all."

"Hmm," said Zorie Spooner. "That is unusual. Everyone else who's been infected started showing symptoms within a few minutes at most."

"What if I'm not infected? What if I'm immune? Just because everyone else you encountered so far who was bitten got infected doesn't mean it always happens."

"Maybe you're right. But if you are immune, what's making you immune? And can we make other people immune too?" She finished cleaning and re-dressing Kimberly's bite wound. "I'd better draw some blood so we can run some tests, and let Dr. Blanco know." She took her temperature. "Yup, it's normal. The infection always results in a fever."

"Let's not jump to any conclusions," said Lereux. "For all we know the onset has just been delayed."

Near I-80-
Cole moved south, close to the edge of the highway, but taking care to avoid the area where Duran had planted a Claymore. From his new position he could get a decent view of the southern part of the field of grass to the west.

(Cole may now roll Spot Hidden. If he succeeds, he must roll Sanity. If he stays sane, he may shoot this round.)

At the garage-
"Come on, man," said Baldwin. "We need all the help we can get. She looks like she knows how to handle a rifle. That means she can stay back where it's safe and shoot from a distance."

"Well," said David, "you make a real good case. Okay, I'm in, but we're going to need more people, more weapons, and more ammo. I'm down to fourteen bullets."

"You're lucky, I've only got eight left. I'd better go look for more. Joe, you going to come with us and show these Nazis the law ain't dead?"

"I'd help," said Erica, "but I've got a chopper to fly."

"I don't know about this," said Jimmy. "Those are some bad dudes, and they've got heavy firepower. We don't even know how many there are."

Mitchell walked into the garage. "If you're talking about raiding the PMS compound, count me in. I promised Dave I'd help him find his friend Zoe, and we think they're holding her there. A few nights ago we went up there to look around and saw some cages. They killed Dave with their bomb, and I owe it to the dude to finish the job and kick the butts of the assholes responsible. First, let's see if I can help you guys with the repairs. I see you found that part."

East of the diner-

"Hang in there, Samantha," said Beth, stepping in front of her and taking aim at the remaining zombie. She squeezed off a round, but her shot was about a foot to the left.

Jenny Cooper slung Wallace's rifle onto her back and took aim with her M-16. She fired and shot it in the head, ending its unlife. "All right!" she said. "That's both of them!"

In the warehouse-
Mr. Foo continued trying to get through to Kerry, but her mind remained just out of reach.

Ellen Cody arrived from upstairs. "Oh, good," she said when she saw her boss and his wife. "You're both here. I'm so relieved! What's Mr. Foo doing?"

"He hypnotize her," whispered Mrs. Foo. "Girl was locked up down here, and something wrong with her mind."

Ellen watched in wonder. "Is there anything he can't do?"

"He can't leave toilet seat down. But I love him anyway."

In the reception area-
"Jim," said Bo, "remember that you're a law enforcement officer. What about your oath to serve and protect? Besides, you've still got the key to the gate that I gave you."

"Can't you just tell him too?" asked Lt. Angela Blanco. "You're already telling us, and he's one of your group. I can't see the harm."

"Nein!" said Dr. Hausmann. "Never! I do not trust him any more. He is unreliable. Do not ask me again!"

Stephanie had been about to speak, but held her peace after her mentor's reaction and continued to type rapidly on the laptop's keyboard.

Just then, Angela Blanco heard the communications over the radio. "Dr. Blanco," said Lt. Malone on the other end of the line, "I seem to recall you speak French. We're in contact with NATO HQ and trying to convince them not to use nuclear weapons in populated areas, but the only man we've spoken to speaks French but not English."

"It would take me at least five minutes to get back there," she replied. "We're pretty deep underground here, and I'm about to get some answers. Wait, I've got it! Can't you just hook up your radio to the microphone? Then I can talk to whoever's on the other end of the line."

"Good thinking! I'll get right on that and let you know when we're ready."

Then Zorie Spooner came on the line. "Dr. Blanco!" she said, her excitement obvious. "There's a woman who came in on that truck who had been bitten by an infected person, but she appears healthy and is not showing any symptoms! I think she may be immune. I'm drawing her blood now, but I think you ought to examine her."

"Why don't you bring her here, if that's okay with the CO?"

In the underground hallway-
The group of explorers crossed the hall to the door that had been the first on their left when they had entered. "Let's see what's behind door number two," said Robert. He opened the door while the others covered him.

On the other side of the door was a large room with eighteen bunks, each with a locker and a table beside it. Pinups from the late 1950's and early 1960's were on the walls, prominently featuring sex symbols Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. There was also an old black and white photograph of a pretty young girl tacked to the wall next to one of the bunks. The room was otherwise empty. As they entered the room, they could see a doorway in the left wall, near the rear, that was not visible from the hallway.

"These must have been the guards' quarters," said Randall.

Motel

Ortega Sat cowering in the corner. "Those motherfuckers err' gonna kill us all!" Ortega gripped his pistol, his eyes widened with fear. "They got Alanen! The fuckers killed Alanen!" Shouted the frightend airmen. "Their coming for us, man! Their comin' for us!"

North of the T-bone

Wallace smirked. "I knew you were a tough one." Said Wallace. The Indian then looks to Zorie. "Sounds like you know a hell of a lot more than I do. What the hell are we up against?"

Concrete Devider

Hockey Begins scanning the area, cautious. "Fuckin' A - Cole. Great god damn idea. Split the fuckin' fireteam" He said to himself, under his breath.

Underground Hallway

Duke looks at the old pinups. "Ya know. The Government whacked Monroe, right?" He said, gripping his rifle.

Cole fails to spot the zombies. Undoubtably because they are hidden by the grass while feasting on their prey. He continues his approach in an attempt to rejoin the firing airmen.

"Thayer, Phillips, stick together and cover eachother. No walking off into the boonies." Cole orders over the radio. "Perpare for tactical withdrawal if necessary."

"Malanowski or Lewis, whomever of the both of you isn't too busy to grace us with your presence, get the fuck out here and take care of McCain! I don't care how you shut him up, stomp him in the gut if you have to but get him off the friggin' radio!"

"Duran, get your ass to the concrete divider and reinforce Hockey. You're in charge of Fireteam 1 until we sort this shit out. Double time it, soldier!"

"Sniper team, where the FUCK is our cover? We are dying down here. Get that freaking pocket-howitzer talking now! Or is it just a goddamn accessory to make up for your tiny dick?!?" he adds yelling into his radio.

West side of the Motel, Balcony Level:
Lewis got on his radio and said, "Cole where in the fuck do you think that you have the authority to order anything? Sgt. McCain saw something that freaked him out and the same thing will happen to you so back the fuck off, I am shooting creatures here. What the fuck are you doing besides playing God?"
Lewis then aimed and fired but his first shot missed! He took aim and fired once more but again the bullet went wide and kicked up dust. "Damm it, I may have to go down to the pavement and fire," he thought to himself. He turned toward the outside steps.

West side of motel, ground level:
McCain continued to laugh and curse over the radio. But suddenly what had occured got through to him and he pushed the radio mike away from his mouth and dropping to the ground began to sob.

In the Garage:
Alice spoke up, "Hey I will go out for a ammo and weapon run if you all needed some help!" She looked toward David and said, "Sorry honey, I may need to leave you for a bit but I will be back to make Mr Happy glad again." She smiled at David.

In the underground hallway:
Jim Keen turned to Dr. Hausmann and said, "Dr, I came here to help since Sean said it was vital to national security. But there are people dying out there and why you play around with your computer looking for a cure they continue dying. I will not work for someone who is so secretive that they refuse to help humankind when we needed it most." Jim then threw the key back to Bo and stormed off. He walked up to the group of explorers and said, "Hi, I am with you all now, what is going on?"

In the comm room-
"Copy that." Black replies over the radio then turns to Ortega "You, get a grip and do your job." He walks out of the hotel and towards the lader hoping to get an over view of the situation. "Sheen I want those targets down NOW! Cole calm the fuck down and reenforce their position. He adds as he begins to climb the rope.

At the garage-
"I'll help but I want to make sure that this place is safe.
The last thing we want to do is come back to a horde of those things."

Underway to Phillips & Thayer -

"My authority comes from being the senior soldier out here right now, airman. That is until Sgt Black exits the building and takes control of the situation." Cole barks into his radio replying to Lewis "Now obey the orders or I'll PT you until you fucking die. If your ass doesn't become zombiefood first, that is."

"Affirmative, sergeant. I'm already on it." Cole replies to Sgt Black.

West side of the motel, near steps leading down to ground level:

Lewis heard the ravings of Cole and replied, " You do not contol me, I report directly to Lt. Malone and Malone alone. So back the fuck off before I use the computer to erase any sign of your pitiful existence mother fucker."

"Get with the program, airman. What the fuck is this? A peeing contest? We've got a man down and two others lost their marbles, you friggin' jackass." Cole barks "Would you rather have me pull out our medic, Phillips to take care of McCain? Thereby removing a rifle from our defensive perimeter and leaving Thayer alone out in the open?"

"I don't care if you're under the command of the virgin fucking godmother herself: if you're plinking with your misserable sidearm without hitting jack shit, you've got spare time on your hands and your efforts can be used better elsewhere..."

"You'll also have to be freaking lucky to see errasing me from some computer making any difference, sport... Unless you've failed to notice, the world as we know it pretty much ended. I doubt computer records will matter where we're headed."

"As for threathening me: Do it again and I'll kick you so hard in the ass that you'll be smelling shoe polish for a week! Is that understood?"

On the West side of the motel, near steps leading down to ground level:
Lewis replied on the radio, "Cole I am heading down right now but if you stopped to listen on this channel instead of cursing all the gol darn time you would hear that Sgt. McCain has shut up. But I am heading down right now to help him out. So get off my ass!"

OOC- Black climbed an actual ladder to get onto the roof. The rope is there to keep it from falling, with one end tied around the top rung and the other around the satellite dish. You can climb directly onto the roof from the ladder and there's no need to climb the rope. The rope could be used, however, to make a ladder in order to access the balcony after the stairs are blocked off.

Also. Cole doesn't yet know that the dead are rising back up, so he wouldn't refer to the creatures as zombies.

IC-
West of the motel-
Thayer cut loose with another burst, and this time he hit one of the creatures that was eating his corporal, though only with a single round. However, that one bullet managed to hit it in the head and wounded it badly. But the thing just continued its horrific meal.

Phillips lined up another shot and squeezed the trigger. His shot flew true and he finished off the one Thayer had hit. "One more down!" he called. "Just one left, and it's wounded badly."

McCain sat sobbing, with his face buried in his hands. Guilt had overwhelmed him. He had been the one who had sent Alanen out into that field. He knew he was ultimately responsible for the man's death, and he could not deal with that knowledge.

On the roof of the motel-
Black climbed back onto the roof and reclaimed his sniper rifle from Sheen, who was squinting into the field of grass still unable to line up a target.

In the comm room-
"Game over, man," muttered Ortega to himself as he tried, not very effectively, to hide in the corner.

"Get a hold of yourself and get back out there, Airman!" ordered Malone again. "Malanowski, go outside and see if there's anything you can do." She shook her head. "Are things this screwed up in Brussels too?"

Mikhalin just shrugged, knowing that her superior wasn't really looking for an answer, and worked on hooking up the portable radio's speaker to the comm system. "There we go!" she said. "It's all set up."

(Malanowski can get out the west exit and roll Spot Hidden this round, but he cannot fire until the round after.)

South of the motel-
Cole made his way to the west, staying on the north side of the highway. He crossed the parking lot and reached the south side of the motel, from which he could get a closer look at the field.

North of the T-Bone-
"Sir?" asked Duran.

"Go," said Captain Lereux. "I'll get someone else to place the warning sign." The Hispanic airman nodded and jogged back to the concrete divider.

Kimberly smiled at Wallace. "Thanks, man," she said.

"I've only been researching this for a few hours now," said Zorie. "I guess that makes me an expert, though there really isn't a whole lot more that I know for certain. I'm Dr. Blanco's assistant, but she's as new to this as I am. We believe this outbreak is caused by some kind of contagious pathogen. Stephanie Bridges has other ideas, but I'm not sure I agree with them. She thinks this crisis originates in outer space, and that the dead are coming back and eating people."

"She's right about that. I saw it happen myself. After Horst died, he got back up and attacked someone. His eyes were red, which had to have been due to the blood vessels bursting. He couldn't possibly have still been alive."

"That sounds like something Stephanie told me."

"Well, she was right. I think she knows quite a bit about the current situation too. I'd believe what she says."

"I'm not so sure," she said. "I mean, space aliens? Sounds kind of outlandish."

"You've got that right," said Lereux.

"Captain, why don't I take Kimberly to see Dr. Blanco now?"

"Okay, but keep her isolated." He turned to Wallace as they headed for the T-Bone. "We just mined this road, and anyone coming from the north is in danger. Can you head to the north a bit and put up this biohazard warning sign so people know to stay back? Could save some lives. I'll cover you."

At the concrete divider-
Duran arrived at Hockey's position and climbed up onto a divider to get a better view. "Let's keep our eyes open," he said. "We can't afford to be outflanked. I'll watch the highway. You keep an eye on the north road in case any more of them were following the truck."

At the garage-
"Thanks, Joe," said Baldwin. "Glad to have you aboard. Only I don't think we'll want to come back here afterwards. Just look at this place. It's not very defensible. Once we take out the PMS, though, we can take over their compound."

"Yeah," said Mitchell. "They've got a wall, an electric fence, all sorts of defenses. That'll keep those monsters out." He started to help with the repairs, and did an excellent job.

"If they've got all those defenses," said Jimmy, "how are we supposed to get past them?"

"Well, we'll need a plan, of course. We're smarter than a bunch of dead guys."

Kimberly and Zorie Spooner arrived outside the garage. "You talking about the PMS compound?" she asked, loading her last shell into her SPAS-12. When he nodded, she went on. "I've got detailed satellite photos of the place on my laptop in the trunk of my car. It's in the parking lot."

"I'm sorry," said David, "but it's chances can't be too good, gorgeous. That bomb went off in the parking lot and wrecked a bunch of cars."

She fished out her keys and tossed them to Baldwin. "Here, check it out on your way to look for weapons and ammo. Find me some shotgun shells too if you can. If the laptop is toast, I'll have to work from memory. Once we take the place over, it would definitely make more sense to stay there than here."

"Not for long, though. We're heading for Alice's place up in Idaho. We could stop there overnight, I guess." He turned to Alice. "We can hold down the fort if you want to go look for guns and ammo, sweetie, now that there are more of us here. I think at this point Wallace can drive the truck back into the garage, and then we can close the door."

"Before we close it, maybe we should move the rest of the aviation fuel outside," said Baldwin. "We're going to go get the chopper and bring it the rest of the way back once we're ready, and we'll need the fuel out there when we do."

East of the diner-
Samantha seemed to be doing a little better, though she was still clearly distraught. "I'd better get back up to the roof," said Beth. "Can you take care of her until she's okay?"

"Sure," said Jenny.

"Thanks." Beth climbed back up the ladder to the roof of the T-Bone.

In the warehouse-
Azadeh slung the M79 grenade launcher onto her back and observed as Mr. Foo continued trying to reach hypnotized Kerry's mind, but he was still having no success. He looked at Kerry's face a little more closely, wondering if maybe he had seen her before.

Recognition dawned on him. "This is the girl in the picture!" he said. "The one Bud showed us."

"Yes, you right!" Mrs. Foo said. "She look a little different now. I think she lose weight, and her hair messed up."

"Didn't Bud say she was taken to the PMS compound?" asked Azadeh. "How did she end up here?"

"I'm not sure," said Mr. Foo, "but perhaps it would be wise to find out."

In the reception area-
Bo caught the gate key and watched with disappointment as Jim Kerr walked away.

"We've got the radio hooked up," Lt. Malone said to Dr. Blanco over the airwaves. "You can go ahead now."

"Thank you, Elizabeth," said Angela Blanco. She switched to French. "Allo?" She heard running footsteps approaching and Major de Wolf came back on the line. She had no problem communicating with him, and was even able to place his accent as Belgian. She quickly introduced herself to him. "We have to warn you not to use nuclear weapons on populated areas, Major. We believe that radiation merely hastens the infection's spread." She told him what she knew about the outbreak and its causes, including Stephanie's ideas.

"I wish someone had told us this before we nuked Istanbul," replied de Wolf. "That was less than ten minutes ago. I'd like to believe you, but I simply don't know who you are or how you got onto this network. It's a very old system that only encompasses Western Europe. England is as far as it reaches. We shouldn't be able to talk to America at all."

"We're using another old network. Apparently it's connected to NATO HQ. I don't know what else I could say to convince you. Lt. Malone probably could, but you don't speak English."

"I just called over someone who does. She should be here soon."

"It's a relief to know it was NATO that was responsible for Istanbul, and not the Russians."

"He doesn't understand," said Stephanie, sadly, after Jim had gone. She continued working on the computer as she spoke. "I just hope nothing happens to him down there."

"Don't worry about him," said Dr. Hausmann. "He made his decision. That's the third time he's tried to desert our mission, and he was never really part of it to begin with. He only came along because he was Sean's friend. Now, then, I was about to explain why what we're doing is so important." She beckoned for Lt. Angela Blanco and Javier Ramirez to come closer, and lowered her voice again.

In the barracks-
"Not my first choice of things I'd have liked to do with Marilyn Monroe," said Robert. He turned when he saw Jim enter. "We already looked through the room across the hall. There's a mess hall, kitchen, and pantry in there. The water runs, but it's rusty so don't drink any of it. We'd have to boil it first. The food is even worse - it's close to 50 years old."

"Do yourself a favor and don't open the fridge," said Sally.

"This looks it was the prison guards' barracks," explained Randall. He and Lynne started looking through the lockers, which contained U.S. military uniforms and civilian clothes in various sizes. They were still in fairly good condition, if a bit out of style. "Let's see what else we can find here."

Sally went over to the doorway and looked inside while Gary covered her. "This must have been the bathroom," she said. "There are bunch of showers, toilets, and sinks in here."

On The Roof-
Black peered over into the grass and saw what had happened.

At the garage-
"It'll take planning. First we have to get in,then secure the compound
while not damaging the defenses and holding off any of those zombies we may come across."

West side of the motel, ground level:
McCain sat on the ground with his hands to his face sobbing. He cried out, "I killed Alanen, it was my fault, please God take me!"

West side of the motel, balcony level:
Lewis got on his radio and called to Lt. Malone, "Ma'am I found a room up here that we can use but it is locked and we need to have the key to unlock it. I am busy trying to kill the things that took out Cpl Alanen and as soon as they are gone I will come back to the Comm Room. If you need me give me a holler." He then picked up Ortega's fallen weapon, the M203 Grenade launcher and taking aim fired at the creatures. He saw the grenade hit the creature in the head area. However he saw that the shot did not kill the creature. "Damm it", he muttered. Lewis then got on the radio and said, "If anyone has seen Cpl Ortega get his ammo from him for his M203. I am doing really great with this weapon."

In the Garage:
Alice said, "Will anyone come outside and help me gather weapons and ammo? It sounds like there is a firefight out there." While waiting for someone to anwser she sat on the ground and thought hard on how to tackle the PMS compound attack problem. A plan suddenly occured to her! "You know I was thinking about how to attack the PMS compound. When I was an undergrad we studied about the Raid at Cabanatuan which freed some 500 POW's from a Jap camp in the last days of WWII. What they did was split thier group into 4 smaller units. 2 of them held the main road while 1 fired at the camp and the last unit snuck into the camp and freed the POW's. It was a huge success. Of course we will have to modify it some but I think we can use this as a model for a planned attack. The really cool thing about it is that those skinheads would never have studied it since it deals with non-Arayon's. What do you all think?"

In the barracks:
Jim Kerr walked around the barracks and used his spot hidden skill to see if he could either find anything of use or maybe a trap door or something. However he found nothing. "There is nothing here of interest. Where to now guys?"

Hotel

Ortega sit cowering in the corner, his hand gripped arround the .45's plastic and metalic grip. "God Damnit! Don't you fucking understand? Our only hope is to bug-the-fuck out! The fuckers are gonna over run us!"

Concrete Devider

"Sounds like a plan" Replied Hockey, remaining vidgelant. "Do you think Cole's losin' it? Guy dosent seem right."

Barracks

Duke decides to search his surroundings for anything of use, but finds nothing "Lets look deeper. Never know when you're gonna find something of use"

North of the Hotel

Wallace looks to the Captain. "What the hell happened?" He asked, periodically looking over his shoulder.

OOC- Since Gonzalez hasn't posted in a long time, I'll take temporary control of his characters as needed. For now his characters won't do anything on their own initiative, but his military characters will obey orders given to them by their superiors.

IC-
West of the motel-
Airman Igor Malanowski emerged from the motel's back door and looked out over the field, but he could detect no movement.

Thayer also surveyed the field looking for something else to kill and seemed to spot something. He let loose with another burst, connecting with one round in his target's leg and causing serious damage.

"It's not your fault, Sarge," said Phillips. "Those things took him down, and Thayer's grenade killed him. And if that didn't kill him, that other grenade must have." He squinted into the field and saw what Thayer was shooting. "What the hell are you doing, man? You're shooting Alanen! Hey, he's moving! I don't believe it, but he's still alive! Good thing you only hit his severed leg. I've got to go help him! Someone cover me!" Without waiting to see if anyone did, he sprinted towards the field.

On the roof of the motel-
The last of the creatures went down after Black blew its head off. He and Sheen saw Phillips take off for the field of grass.

In the comm room-
"We're going nowhere, Airman," said Malone to Ortega. "We have a job to do." She got on the radio. "Lewis , it's best to go easy on the grenades anyway. Malanowski, what do you see out there?"

"I can't see a thing, ma'am," he replied.

"This is Phillips ma'am," reported the medic. "The enemy have been eliminated, and Alanen is alive, repeat, alive! He's lost a leg and a lot of blood, but he's still got a chance!"

"Ma'am," said Mikhalin, "what if he's not alive? What if Mr. Goldberg was right?"

"While I respect your opinion," answered Malone, "I don't see any possibility of that. Even if he were right, Alanen could still be alive."

"Elizabeth," said Angela Blanco over the radio, "I managed to get through to a Major Roland de Wolf III at NATO HQ. I can confirm that it was NATO that dropped the bomb on Istanbul. I almost convinced him that using nukes is a bad idea, but he doesn't know we are who we say we are or how we got onto his comm network. He's getting someone who can speak English now."

"Thank you, Angela. Once they do I'll take it from there."

More running footsteps could be heard over the communication lines, this time approaching. A woman's voice spoke, with a British accent and quite out of breath: "Right," she huffed, "this is Captain Miranda Reynolds. Whatever it is, make it quick. Our perimeter was breached a few minutes ago and I ought to be out there shooting those blighters."

"Lieutenant Elizabeth Malone, USAF, ma'am. We have information from Diego Garcia that populated areas that have been nuked have seen increases in the rate of infection. Our working theory is that the radiation hastens its spread. We need you to notify everyone you can not to use nuclear weapons to try to contain the infection."

"So the major said. But why the bloody hell should I believe you? You could be anyone! You are not authorized to use this channel!"

South of the motel-
Cole heard the crack of the sniper rifle and saw the creature that he had just missed go down.

North of the T-Bone-
"A good man just died," said Captain Lereux, "that's what happened. Beyond that I'm not sure." Then he heard Phillips over the radio, brightened a bit, and responded. "He's alive? Do what you can for him, but exercise caution. Remember that he has been exposed to the pathogen." Lereux looked off to the north for any sign of traffic, and his eyes widened with alarm. "All personnel, be advised! We have a large mob incoming from the north! There are dozens of them, over half a mile off but moving slowly. ETA approximately six to eight minutes. I want them stopped by any means necessary!" He planted the warning sign in the middle of the road where he stood. "This'll have to do. I suggest you fall back and get ready. I bet they followed your truck back here." He retreated to the south.

(The large group of zombies is approximately a thousand yards to the north. Only Black can fire without a range penalty, and he can get off five shots before the next update (as can anyone with a rate of fire of 1). Now that Lereux has spotted them and alerted everyone, anyone with a clear line of sight on the north road can see them without having to roll Spot Hidden.

Black and Sheen also get a bonus to hit from their laser sights equal to 20% of their skill, rounded down. They didn't get this earlier because there were obstructions between them and the target, such as the field of grass. When shooting at the zombies from the north, they do get this bonus. Black's effective skill is 92+18=110%, or 105% for a headshot, so he will only miss on a malfunction, which happens on a 98 or higher with the Barrett. Sheen's effective skill without a range penalty would be 82+16=98%, or 93% for a headshot. His M24 only malfunctions on a 100, but it also has a rate of fire of 1/2, so he can only get 3 shots off this round. It also doesn't have as much range, so this round he will fire at half skill if Black orders him to or Gonzalez chooses to fire - from the following round onwards he will fire at normal skill. If he fires this round, his skill is 82 / 2 + 16=57%, or 52% for a headshot.

Cole cannot see the zombies from his position on the south of the motel, and neither can anyone on the west side. He can spend this round moving to a new position from which he can, however. Duran and Hockey can shoot at them, but they have massive range penalties (less than half skill) for now.

Luke has a scope and bipod on his M-14, so he could fire five times at half skill this round (80 / 2 = 40%, or 35% for a headshot). Starting the round after, he will get to use his full skill.

The zombies aren't close enough for anyone to roll Sanity yet. I'll keep a running tally of how many are killed.

Reloading an automatic weapon by swapping out a magazine takes one of a character's five possible rounds of fire. For a revolver, giving up one round of fire allows you to load two bullets (or use a speedloader). Likewise, you can load up to two shells in a shotgun by sacrificing one round of fire. Of course, the zombies are nowhere near close enough for anything but a rifle at the moment.)

At the concrete divider-
Duran glanced at Hockey with interest. "You're pretty perceptive," he said quietly. "Keep a close eye on Cole, and be wary." His eyes scanned the highway in both directions, but didn't see anything to catch his attention.

When Lereux alerted them of the new threat to the north, he turned to look and could clearly see the horde in the distance. So could Hockey. "Let's hold our fire for now," said Duran. "We need to wait until they get closer, or we'll just be wasting our ammo."

Lereux arrived at the divider and joined his men. "Good idea, Airman," he said, looking back to the north.

At the garage-
"We'll definitely need to create some kind of distraction," said Kimberly, "but I don't know if we have enough people to divide ourselves into four groups, and just firing at the compound would have limited effectiveness. Trooper Richards and I were discussing this earlier, and he mentioned the possibility of blowing up their meth lab. It's far enough from where we believe the captives are being held. When the lab goes up, we could then secure them while the skinheads are busy dealing with the fire. If we're really lucky, they won't even realize they're under attack - meth labs are volatile, and sometimes explode without any outside interference. The trick would be getting someone inside to cause the explosion."

"We may not have any choice but to damage their defenses a little," said Baldwin, "but if we pull this off we can repair them later. I'll go with you to get some guns and ammo."

"Me too," said Erica Spears. She joined Baldwin and Alice outside.

"Keep an eye out for shotgun shells," said Kimberly.

"And I can use some 9mm bullets," added David.

"Do you know where Dr. Blanco went?" asked Zorie Spooner. "She said something about being downstairs."

"Yeah, there are stairs in what used to be the liquor closet," said Mitchell, pointing. "Through that door and down the hall."

"Thanks." She led Kimberly across the garage and to the stairs.

In front of the diner-
As Baldwin led Alice and Erica back to the parking lot in front of the diner, they noticed the commotion and looked to the north. "That laptop will have to wait," he said. "We need those guns fast! Let's go!" He quickened his pace to a run, and they soon arrived at the diner's blown-out front. "That looks like it's where the edge of the roof collapsed. Man, look at all those bodies. Looks like they've been shot in the head, so at least they won't be getting back up again. Let's see what they've got. They sure won't be needing it any more."

East of the diner-
Luke reached to the east side of the diner just as Beth called down from the roof: "We've got more of them coming from the north! A lot more!"

Samantha finally began to calm down. "What have I done?" she said. "I can't believe I almost..." She suddenly became aware of what was going on around her. "Quick, give me a rifle!"

Jenny Cooper looked her in the eyes and nodded. "Yeah, you're okay now. Just don't do anything like that again! You gave us all quite a scare." She handed her the M-16. "Here, you'd better take this one. You're a much better shot than I am." She next unslung the Mini 14 and held it ready.

In the warehouse-
"Perhaps I should ask her some questions while she's under hypnosis," said Mr. Foo. "If she knows anything about the PMS it could be important, not to mention how she could have gotten from the compound to here. I did not want to, for she has been through so much and there is a risk to her mental health, but this information could potentially save lives, including her own."

"I think you should do it," said Azadeh. "It is worth the risk to get this information."

"Yes, I'm sure you are right. I shall endeavor to be careful. If I begin at the beginning and go slowly, we will get the most out of her while minimizing the danger. He sat across from Kerry and met her gaze. "Kerry, I need you to remember some things and tell them to us. Start by telling me about yourself. Who are you? Where are you from?"

"My name is Kerry Pierce," she said. "I'm from Chicago, and I'm a sociologist working with underprivileged youth in the city. I have recently obtained my Masters in sociology from the University of Chicago."

"Who are the important people in your life? Are you married? Do you have a boyfriend?"

"No, I'm single. I did have a boyfriend, but we broke up. He's a lawyer in Chicago. My family is also from Chicago. My parents still live there, but I have no brothers or sisters. My best friend is my roommate, Debbie Woodson."

"You're a long way from Chicago, Kerry. How did you get here?"

"Debbie and I went out west to do some rock climbing. I'm an expert climber. First we went to South Dakota, and we just climbed Devil's Tower last week. Then we headed south.

"We stopped at a bar in the town of Deadwood. That's where we met that horrible man, Horst. He started hitting on me, but then he got angry when he found out Debbie was my friend, because she's black. He was spewing all kinds of hate until the bartender made him leave. I thought that was the end of it, and we went back to our hotel rooms. In the morning we left town, heading south for Colorado.

"While we were on the road our tire went flat and we had to pull over. A van pulled up behind us and these men got out and offered to help. But when they got close, they sprayed us with something and we passed out. When we woke up, we were in the back of the van, tied up, gagged, and blindfolded. Oh, God..."

Kerry suddenly stopped speaking and blinked, looking around with fear in her eyes.

"It's okay," said Mr. Foo, "you're fine now." But the spell was broken.

In the reception area-
Angela Blanco listened to Dr. Hausmann's explanation while she also followed Lt. Malone's conversation with NATO on the private channel they had set up. "Elizabeth," she said, "maybe I can get through to her."

"Go ahead and give it a try," said Malone.

"Captain Reynolds, I'm Lt. Angela Blanco. Everything Lieutenant Malone and I have said is true. Please, you must notify everyone with their fingers on the button not to launch any more nukes! Countless lives are at stake."

"Very well," said Miranda Reynolds. "I believe you. I think I can get Major de Wolf to agree. Thank you for getting in touch with us. Where exactly are you, and how did you manage it?"

"We're at some rest stop in southwestern Nebraska, ma'am. There's an old CIA listening post out here that's hooked into an antique Cold War communications network, probably a lot like your own. If you can reach others through your network in Europe, we can prevent more tragedies like Istanbul."

"Will do. Nebraska, you said? One of our chaps is down your end, bloke named Walters. He's a captain in the RAF. You wouldn't happen to have him around, would you?"

Stephanie continued her furious typing while following Dr. Hausmann's story. She was able to multitask with no problems or delays. Bo also managed to both follow the conversation and keep watch on the hallway.

In the barracks-
"Hold on," said Lynne. "We haven't searched this place thoroughly yet. Maybe there's something else in here." She poked around and found a deck of old cards behind a locker. On the each card was a black-and-white picture of a nude woman. She smirked. "Sure, they were hot then, but I but they're all wrinkly by now."

Next she examined the photograph near the bunk and flipped it over. "Hey, there's something written on the back!" she said. She read it out loud. "Tony, looking forward to when you come home, XO, Mary." She looked under the bed and beneath the mattress. "Let's see what else I can find. Hey, what's this?" She pulled out a letter that had been hidden under the mattress and showed it to the others.

"I'll read it to everyone," said Robert. "Dear Mary,

Thank you for your recent letter. I am looking forward to seeing you as soon as my deployment here in Korea is over. I am well though I hope this mission will soon be over. Many of the guys are feeling stressed out and are also looking forward to going home, but we have to wait for orders. Thank you for your picture. I have it near my bed and the other guys tease me for having such a pretty girl waiting for me back home but they just wish they had a girl as sweet as you. One thing for sure, I am planning to give up this Army life for something more normal. I am tired of it. It's not the danger but, well, maybe I will tell you about it one day.

Love you,

Tony"

In the bathroom-
Sally went into the bathroom and tried the faucet on one of the sinks. "Yup, the water works in here too!" she called. She looked around the room, and noticed some graffiti on the wall of one of the toilet stalls. "Hey, look at this. It says 'The demons are below and they are hungry.' Sounds pretty nutty." She turned back to the sink and shut off the rusty water, then shrank back as she noticed a red substance burbling up slowly from the drain. "That...looks like blood!"

At the diner -

Luke prefers to go up to the roof before firing.

Underway to the wounded trooper -

"Phillips! Be careful. It's damn near impossible for him not to be infected! I don't want to loose our only medic, is that understood?" Cole warns "Thayer, back Phillips up now! Go!"

"Duran, Hockey, redeploy for maximum arc of fire." Cole says over the radio. "And warn the civies, they can supplement our fire."

West side of the motel, ground level:
As McCain heard that Alanen was moving, he looked up and began laughing madly. "He's alive, He's Alive!", he shouted in joy and then he began crying again as he remembered how messed up Alanen was going to be with the grenades and being chewed by those creatures. "I am sorry, Alanen, forgive me!"

West side of the motel, balcony level:
Lewis turned to the stairs thinking about running down and trying to help Sgt. McCain but then he got on his radio and said, "Lt. Malone, with more creatures on their way, we need to move the equipment now! I will be right there in a minute." He then hurried back downstairs to the comm room.

The Comm room:
Lewis walked in and said, "What can I move now to get this done? We need to move quickly, it is not safe here!"

In front of the diner:
As she stood thier looking around for ammo and weapons, Alice said, "You know I have done a bit of acting in college and I think I can act like a skinhead in order to get into the compound and then i can get to the meth lab and blow it up. What do you think?
Without waiting for an answer she crouched to the ground and began searching the bodies for ammo. However she did not find anything of interest on the bodies. "Nothing here, were to next?" she asked.

In the barracks:
Feeling like a fool for not noticing the stuff Lynne found, Jim Kerr listened to the letter being read and then sitting on one of the bunks thought about what he had heard. However he was too tired to think clearly. Shaking his head, he got up and hearing Sally went to the door of the bathroom to look at the sink.
