ICC- Fallout Chapter 2- The Wastelands

Dwemer was also reaching some of his own conclusions.

While the acid seemed to be working the creature seemed to be adapting to it. Each vile seemed to do less damage.

What was necessary was a single powerful attack. Enough of an attack to hit the entire creature's body in on blow.

Electricity.

"Blast the power cables above. If it falls in it will fry the beast in one try." Sam tried to make some shots at the above cables, but the creature seemed more interesting in eating her. One might tentacle slammed into her knocked her off balance, hitting the concrete floor.

She could feel her chest burn and the wind knocked out of her.

As it began to snake towards her A littl figure came running to her aid and lifted the assualt rifle. It was a dark haired Mexican girl with the face of wandering gypsy.

She smiled at Sam as she crouced and fired controled shots of AP at the tentacles and some shots at the above cables.

"The cards said the maiden of steel may rust bellow here." Roadrunner whispered.

For one moment, the lights flicked. A tiny snap sound almost was not heard in the battle below.
And then the voice was heard.
Everybody, step away from the monster! And make damn sure you are not steping on a water puddle!

It was Inne. She was on the ceiling, hang hold by her legs. With her old but sharp, trusted knife, she had cut loose a thick eletric wire, that she was holding in the left hand while puting the knife back in the holster. (OOC: is this the word for a knife cover, too, or just for guns?)

Inne breathed fast, her heart was pounding like the tribals drums. She could not bear the thought of Carib being attacked by that hideous monster while she could do nothing. But she did climb up there to the exposed wires and managed to get the robot to cut the electricity when she made a signal, and to turn it on again with the next signal. So good the tin can can understand simple commands...

The wire was not long enough to reach the ground, but it would get near enough to make the effect she wanted. Her heart was pounding fast and she hoped not to get too dizzy with all that blood in her head and was trying not to think on how high was that place and how smashed would be her face if she sliped for a moment and fell down.

Her red hair was all up, her legs begining to tire from being up there, and the hand was not helping much, for the position was not comfortable. Its now or never.... She did not want to consider the idea of the electricity not killing the monster or making it stronger instead... Yet the thought crossed her mind, and once again she realized she had acted by impulse. Sure, she did not think twice about climbing that way and trying that crazy plan.

Inne concentrated and lowered the black power cable slowly towards the creature. It was almost touching it...

"Wow! Wow! Wow!" Yelled Melvin. "YOu ain't goin' to fry my nigga ass with that hot wire are you."

Caribe was being knocked against the shelves and was doing his best to avoid breaking any bones, but he had received a few jarring blows. But he was also dimly aware of the danger that electricity posed him.

And to think he was actually thinking of having sex with her.

"Inne.... the electricity. Maybe..."
(Whack- as he got slammed into the ceiling) "Cut me down first?"

Melvin, who had been embracing the creature with the mechanical lifter was now trying to fight his way away from the tentacles. Even so he reached for the tentacle that was holding Caribe to try to get the man loose.

"Damn it. My grandma always said, if a woman is denied her 'hey nani nani' she'll turn her attention to electric love but I didn't think this is what she meant."

The world around Carib seemed like a dim haze. His head was swimming and all he could hear was Melvin chatter about pre-war sex toys. "What... evera... ya say.." He slurred, his head ringing. He couldn't even raise his gun at the beast.

The mystery girl was downstairs in with them holding her own with the assault rifle and Sam was backing her up with her dual Colt .45.

Richard was barely able to keep himself from laughing out loud while dodging the tentacles. Realising he was doing stupid shit going in against the beast armed with only a spear he decided to only try to free Carib. With all his strength (which, to be honest wasn't all that much), he buried his acid tipped spear into the tentacle that was holding Carib up in the air. The beast apparently hadn't adapted to the acid yet, as the tentacle had a heavy spasm. Richard had just run back a couple of meters, as the tentacle stretched, letting Carib fly through the air, landing right on top of Richard. Both of em slid on until they hit the wall.

"Fuck man, I think you just broke my nose" Richard said as he spit out some blood. "Nurse!"

Somehow, this all seemed a bit quite comical to Richard. Probably just Melvin's joke, maybe the setting or that fact that he had just freed Carib. But it could just be that he had a concussion...

Melvin did his best to escape, but as strong as the Loader was, it was also ponderous and slow. The more he tried to escape, the more the creature latched it's tentacles upon him, slowing him down.

Melvin looked over to where Inne hung precipitious over the pool of water that the creature was still plowing through. She couldn't hold on much longer. Because the creature was not focused on Melvin however, the tentacles were leaving Inne alone.

The creature's tentacles ran up the loader's legs like vines pulling down a tree, and it was using it's weight to topple the loader. If the loader were to fall, Melvin knew the creatures tentacles would reach into the small hatch and tear him to shreds. That or one clawed tentacle would drag him into the creatures jaws.

He continued to move back, but it was no use. He was stuck.

But maybe there was a way out afterall. Having worked in maintenance in the vault, Melvin knew a few things about electricity, like how metal could act as a conduit. In fact, if the high voltage wires were to attach themselves to the loader, the loader might act like an electric rail, giving this beast a fine sizzle.

Which was great, except ole Melvin would be one toasted nigga, and he was black enough already.

The loader now trapped, the creature kept tugging, it's tentacles wrapped around the loader, squeezing it, pulling it down.

Melvin looked up and saw the hatch and thought - 'If he can escape through the top hatch though, maybe I can grab something as I help this fucker bring the loader down.'

Using a knife he quickly started cutting through the harness which had trapped him before. Then he began trying to climb out as the tentacles reached for his feet.

OCC- Ok, I would appreciate that the electricity stuns the beast but doesn't necessarily kill it. In fact I would like the end of this to remain somewhat unclear.

Vedpose was not having fun this little venture. Don’t eat this or that it will make you noxious, give you headache, be a repeat of the mushroom thing, temporary blindness, any or none of the above. She approached yet another piece of wasteland vegetation and looked over at Zeke. He shook his head. She had had it. How the hell did anyone survive out here if everything is poisonous?

She kicked the bush in frustration and out ran a golden gecko.

Inne was holding on to the ceiling bars, and still holding the wire that was hanging down a few feet over the place where the monster was. She was doing her best to keep hanging on. She did not know how long she would be able to... But she was glad that Carib and Rich had taken distance from the monster. Sam and the strange girl too - for a moment she wondered if the woman could really tell the future or was just posing...

Inne pulled the wire up, a few more feet, giving Melvin more room.
Melvin managed to escape the loader. He jumped to the ground as the creature intensified its "hug" on the loader. Another coupleo f moments and Melvin would be gone if he hadnt managed to flee!

Inne breathed deep: Its now or never!

She let go of the wire, directly on the loader. A strange sound was heard, a kind of buzz. And then that smell of fried meat!

There were shrieks. The creature was screaming?
It was fast, so fast... There was smoke, a heavy thud and splash and some sounds as something heavy being dragged really quickly against the wet floor.

When smoke dissipated, the monster was not there, and the wire was over the loader. The loader was fallen to the side.

"Robot, turn off electricity!"
Ligths fickled, she cut the cable so it would not be hanging dangerously on their way. Turn back on, robot! Folks, are you ok? Is everybody here and safe?

A few replies came from here and there.
Inne started climbing back down.

Dwemer went to help Inne and to check the others.

Roadrunner was saying to Caribe- "See, I told you to watch out for the souless one."

Caribe was still a bit woozy from being knocked around. But that was better than Curt who was still out.

Rich was also looking about.

"Where the hell did it go?" He asked.

"Not sure but I don't think we should stay here and find out." Said Melvin, who had jumped from the loader unto a shelf and was slowly making his way down.

"Damn thing could still escape this place." Said Dwemer. "But maybe it went back in there." Indicating the control room and the hazardous substance room.

Sam looked at the room. "Should we go back in and get it?"

"Fuck that." Said Melvin. "I say we get our asses out of here before it comes back for more."

"Then let's drop this level once and for all." Said Inne. "Robot, how to self-destruct this level?"

OCC- Ok, this is about all I wanted to do in this part of the story. I say we blow the level, and get back to Shady Sands.

As Zeke's hand flew towards the hilt of his pistol he drew upon all of his willpower and stopped himself.

"Quick Vedpose kill the damn gecko."

"But I can't kill it I am a vegan."

Zeke shook with compressed rage, and spat out between clenched teeth."For the love of God shoot it."

Vedpose was going to say something , but knowing how little he would care she just dropped to one knee with a frown and shot it.

Suprisingly it didn't kill it. Instead it ran at Vedpose with a broken hand tightly held to it's side. Before Vedpose could resettle her aim it dashed into a string of bushes.

Vedpose turned to Zeke expecting him to lecture her on a lost gecko. What she did not expect was Zeke handing her a knife without a word.

Vedpose spat out a confused "What the hell do I-"

The gecko leapt from behind the bushes and landed on her back. As Vedpose tried to get back up the gecko firmly attached it's mouth to her shoulder and began raking her side with it's sharp claws.

Vedpose was gonna have a hell of a time with this one...........

"Self destruct? Please refer to section 12 of the security manual or consult the nearest security guard." The robot replied to Inne.

"Emergency robot! How and where can we self destruct this level?" Inne replied mildly irritated, while slowly moving towards the door.

"Emergency? The mainframe located in the lowest US:PTO level has activation rights. Or manual override can be done by manually arming the 5 explosive charges located in the 4 outer rooms and the middle room... *Security announcement* Please keep clear while using self destruct procedures. Be sure to lower the armored door in front of the elevator or you will risk blowing up the elevator and letting the explosion spread through the shaft and the facility. *End of security announcement* ... Was this reply more satisfactory?" The robot answered.

"Move it, Inne, we have gotta get out of here fast." Rob called out.

Melvin picked up Curt and everyone hurried towards the warehouses exit.

"You ok Richie?" Sam asked when she saw Richard fingering his bleeding nose.

"Yeah, everything is just peachy. It might not be broken afterall, just severely bruised. You?" Richard answered.

"Just got the air knocked out of me, thats all." She said with a faint smile.

"Glad to hear it." Richard replied. "Yoinks!" He said as he stole a frag grenade off Sam's belt before she could do or say anything.

When Inne and the droid finally left the room, Richard closed the door behind them and boobytrapped it with the grenade. After that, he shot the controls to seal the door. Hopefully this would be a nice little surprise, if the beast should decide to follow them afterall.

The corridor looked a lot different now. Masses of goo and filth were now lying on the floor, instead of floating around. The light of their helmets no longer made spooky shapes and shadows because of the water. But it wasn't time to celebrate just yet. Richard wondered what defenses would still be active to protect this mainframe on the US:PTO lower level and if it wasn't a smarter move to arm them manually.

Inne was glad everybody was ok.
She was not the cheesy type, in the sense that she usually did not display any emotion that would make her look vulnerable - but she did care.

While the group was deciding what to do, she took her time to think.

"Guys, I have an idea."

"What is it, Inne?" Richard said. People had quieted.
She took a deep breath and, placing her hands on her waist, said:
"You heard the bot. He could arm the self destruction but this stubborn tin can wants some codes and security and other rubbish. Instead we could arm that ourselves, manually."

"There are five charges to be detonated."

"Yes, and we are nine - well, not counting the bot. I will arm one of the charges. But remember not only we´ll have to arm the detonators, we´ll have to have a clear escape route, before all gets burted!"

"We can use the robot to make sure our way is clear, or we can use it to set one of the charges."

Inne hesitated. But it seemed reasonable.
"He could garanty our safety, if he is in charge of setting the farther detonator. He would buy us time to leave...I say those of us who do not run much or with less fighting skills should leave now, while the othes set the charge."

"Agreed. I wanna arm one, too" Sam said.

"Heck, I kinda expected you, thanks! We also have Carib, Richard, Rob;. Dwemer, you are still wounded, I think you better go with the psychic lady outside. Melvin, you carry Curt and should go with them just in case there is some surprise on the way!"

"Wait a minute, Inne! how the heck are you suppose to arm those explosives? I mean, Richard boy here seems to know a lot of this stuff, but you..."

"I thought of that too. I figured Richard could tell us how to do it, that is, if the robot does not have instructions to give us..

She took a look around, looking at each one´s faces.
"That is, if you guys agree. If you have a better idea, say it, damn!"

She made a wrinkle in her forehead, in a way that her rant was funny rather than a rant.

The robot said: "I have to obey and protect humans. My mission is to serve. Security measures shall be taken in the next minutes else there is a 50% chance that security may be breached again by the hostile life forms..."

"Sounds like a plan, Inne, but there is one small problem: Explosives do not have one standard design. These self destruct explosives could be under any shape or form. So whatever I tell you know might be useless..." Richard said.

"You got a point there, I could probably handle it anyway, but I don't know about the others. How about we all go to the middle explosive, arm it together and then split up when we are sure what it looks like?" Sam replied.

"Ok, works for me. Melvin & Dwemer, maybe the girl looking for cookies too, you guys carry Curtis up and try to figure out how this elevator blastprotection thingy works?" Richard said while checking his pistols again.

"Last possibility for objections folks!" He added.

Roadrunner checked her cards and saw the man riding a A-Bomb. Not good.

"If we don't move now more demons will descend upon us." Roadrunner said ominiously.

She placed her small supple arms around Curtis. "Get up, Uncle. We must move or we be buried alive with demons." Curtis in her eyes was her elder and as such she had to respect him. It was part of her childhood experience growing up. Always respect your elders. She even picked up his shotgun and checked the chambers for shells.

Melvin and Dwemer carried Curtis down the hallway, led by Roadrunner.

Something was amiss. The strange critters that had hidden so well when they first came about were moving about, searching for new places, trying to escape.

As if they knew something terrible had been unleashed.

The lights were flickering and beginning to go out, as if the place had already begun to shut down. To Dwemer it felt as if a coffin was closing upon them.

One of the critters they passed was a strange looking octupus like creature, part crawling, part oozing down the corridor on it's tentacles. It was like the thing they had found in the Hazardous storage room. It lashed a tentacle around Dwemer's leg and attached itself to his boot. Then it got it's mouth around the leather enclosed toes and begin to gnaw. The creature was not strong enough to break the leather but Dwemer could feel the pressure of it's maw against his foot.

He quickly scrapped is boot along the wall, removing the octupus thing in a long purple colored slime.

WHen they finally got to the elevator Melvin when to check the cables while Dwemer began looking into the blast doors. Roadrunner worked on Curtis where he had been set down in the corner, and was trying to revive him with smelling salts.

"These cables are fucked." Said Melvin. "Only way we're going to get this piece of shit moving is if we had a crane to lift the cable and new cable to re-set the cables."

Dwemer was having similar problems with the blast doors at the elevator. "The damn control board is burnt out. It would take us a week to get them to work."

"Can you do it manually?"

Dwemer was trying to pull the doors. Even with his massive strength he couldn't get the door to budge.

"Inne!" Called Dwemer "No way to get these blast doors going and the elevator is shot. We're going to have to climb out of here if we get out at all!"

He looked up the corridor but wasn't sure Inne heard him. "I have to back and tell them." He said, and then went off.

Inne said: "Let´s go to the center detonator, and I am sure our robot here will tell us how to start it, right, robot?"

"My programming orders me to protect human security at all costs"

"Robot, our damn security depends on detonating those charges, so I command you, I give you a direct order to show us how to start the central detonator!" The vein in her neck was a bit up and her freckled skin got reddish, but the robot whirled and fuzzled then said:

"Acknowledged."

Inne sighed. The robot then started moving to the detonator in the center, followed by Inne, Rob, Carib, Richard and Sam.

It stoped in front of the detonator and started an detailed explanation - instructions that were programmed many years ago, in hope never to be used. As the robot proceeded in its monotone voice, Inne had yawned once.
After a couple of minutes that seemed to have lingerd much longer, the five had received the instructions and it was clear that Richard and Sam had understood a bit faster cause they already had some knowledge of the matter.

"Right, robot. You can do this one, to show us!

Then Dwemer entered the room, panting a bit.
"Inne! Guys..."
"What happened, man? Why the heck are you here?
"We gonna have to find a way to climb up. Elevators not going to work!"

Damn!!!

"We still have the ropes, right? The ones we used to get down here?

"Yes, but sure we cant climb too fast on them."

"We´ll have to think of another plan!

"Robot, how long do we have till the detonation, after the explosives are activated?"
The robot made funny noises, as if it was "thinking".

OOC: Welsh, how much time we got?

"The standard detonation time was set to 7 minutes and 30 thirty seconds. However, there were alterations made to the basic design when the cannisters of toxic chemicals were installed in the warehouse. I am therefore unsure of the set time. The units have displays, but they can only be read once activated." The robot said.

Richard has been closely examining the self destruct mechanism and it was obvious that thisone was not in its original state. Extra wiring was soldered on and leading to 2 dark cannisters standing against the wall. They looked like something you would expect to contain some sort of gas. They were about 1.5 meter high, painted completely black, except one little label stating 'Caution: H.E. Thermite Plasma'.

Richard had learned about this back home. In their base there had been hangars with old military ordnance meant for the Airforce. Thermite Plasma was a kind of more high tech napalm. It was the kind of thing you would drop on something you wanted to be sure to disintegrate without having anything escaping the blast, things like a chemical weapons factory. No harmful chemical would be left intact.

"Robot, are these cannisters the alterations you were talking about?" Richard asked.

"Amongst other things, yes." The robot replied.

"How many of these cannisters are there?" Richard inquired with a frown on his face.

"Only these two, the other self destruct devices were only altered on a software level." The robot explained.

"What is it, Richie?" Sam asked before anyone else could say anything.

"This is thermite plasma, it will burn up and consume ANYTHING it touches, which is ok for us as we want to rid ourselves of the chemicals, but it also spreads like TBC in a Saigon whorehouse." Richard explained. "When this thing goes off, we need to be completely out of the vault if the elevator protectionthingy isn't working like Dwemer said."

"Is one bomb enough then?" Inne inquired in the hope of only having to use the bot as a martyr.

"I'm afraid not. The designspecs i've seen of the vault say there are 4 firewalls and firedoors which possibly could stop it from spreading on this level, so we need to detonate the other explosives to blow them out. However the middle bomb has free passage to the elevator and will surely spread if the elevatorshield is not down." Richard explained to the group. He was making a lot of assumptions, but in his heart he felt them to be true.

"So we arm them and get the fuck out of here in 7 and a half minutes?" Dwemer asked.

"That might be shorter than you think." Sam said.

A screeching metal sound filled the lower vault. The group became more nervous.

"True, but i guess we have no other choice." Richard agreed. "Dwemer, you make sure the freaky gypsy, Melvin & Curt get out ok. We arm thisone together, the robot goes to the south, Inne & Carib west, Sam & Rob east and i'll take the north one."

The group nodded. Although Richard was not a born leader (nor would he want to be one), his suggestion made sense and everyone agreed. He then proceeded to arming this bomb. A small humming noise filled the room and the display lit up saying 'Linked'. No timer. No countdown.

"Shit, it must be set to only explode if the other 4 have gone off." Richard said.

"Well, let's arm them then and get this show on the road, kids." Inne said as she walked out.

"Slowly count to 120 and then arm the bombs, so we can be sure everyone arms them at the same time." Sam said just before the group split up.

_____________________________________

Richard headed to the north side of the vault with a feeling of regret and fear. Regret of not having asked Sam to come with him and fear of something happening to her. Of course his mind was certain things were better off this way, the groups had been formed based upon knowledge and skill. Richard continued down the dark halls with both his pistols drawn, but there were no hostile pests to be spotted. It was as if they were hiding from somethings, not one single spider was to be seen.

*fifty-eight*

*fifty-nine*

*sixty*

A loud metallic crash echoed through the vault followed by a small explosion. The beast! The boobytrap! It was safe to assume that the beast would survive the boobytrap, when you had seen the beating it had taken in the warehouse without really being hampered. Richard could hear insects and other pests running north on the ceiling tiles. But no time to worry about that, he had a job to do.

*seventy-one*

*seventy-two*

*seventy-three*

Richard reached the outer north room and to his surprise, it wasn't even there anymore! All that was left was debri, a crater filled with dirty water and a large hole in the wall, seemingly connecting to some kind of cave. This bomb had obviously already been set off, but did not cause a chainreaction to the others. The firewall was lying in ruins as Richard expected.

*eighty*

*eighty-one*

*eighty-two*

Richard went to take a look inside the cave as he still had time before the others would arm their bomb. He almost wet his pants when he came face to face with an adult Radscorpion which had been standing just around the corner. The scorpion was just as startled and lashed out with its tail, only to miss Richard and hit the cave wall. Richard was now more or less recovered from this little surprise and pumped the scorpion full of lead.

At this point Richard had completely lost count, but it didn't matter anyway. He headed back full speed towards the elevator. As he ran he kept hearing the sound of insects heading the other direction, they probably were heading towards the caves to make their way out, like rats on a sinking ship. Richard had had the longest way to run so it was possible he might meet up with the rest at exactly the same time near the elevator.

Richard took the final corner only to be stopped dead in his tracks. He now should have clear view of the elevator, but no, all he could see was the same damn ugly tentacled beast, they had dealt with before. It was trying to push itself into the elevatorshaft to move up towards the surface. Either that, or it was trying to hunt Dwemer, Melvin, the gypsy girl and Curt, but they were probably long gone. Luckily, the beast had not noticed Richard just yet...

Dwemer had quickly made the assent up five levels of the infrastructure and through the greasy elevator shaft in record time.

But he had his doubts 8 minutes to get the entire group to the surface? After the battering they had gotten through.

Ignoring these doubts Dwemer made it to the top and began preparing the other ropes that the group had left behind on the landing. While he did this Melvin and Roadrunner had tied Curtis to a rope.

After setting three of the ropes, Dwemer looked down to see a dim light at the bottom and another working it's way up. It would be Roadrunner at the bottom helping Curtis with Melvin working his way up.

No time to waste. Dewmer called down, "I'm going to bring up Curtis. Roadrunner do what you can to help him and avoid any snags the might bump into."

"Got it!" Called up Roadrunner.

Dwemer pulled. The old man was heavy but even so Dwemer's physical strength was enough. When Melvin reached the top he added his strength to Dwemer. Roadrunner, below was climbing up near Curtis, pushing the unconscious body away each time some part of his clothing got stock in the elevator shaft.

Roadrunner was beginning to feel that they would survive this. Indeed, her cards had showed her an image of a house in a grave that she had yet to visit. But the cards were never determinate, even the cards held out for foolish fate.

Still, she was feeling optimistic.

Until she felt something long and leathery wrap itself around her leg and foot.

She looked down.

Ten feet below, the creature was had oozed into the elevator shaft. She could see parts of it below, in the elevator car itself, it's tentacles reaching through. She could see it's many eyes gazing up at her, and it's maw open, a thousand teeth glistening as the beast seemed to salivate for her.
