You can let yourself get all hung up on the survival horror thing, but that genre is dead and it isn't coming back.

Dead Space, Silent Hill, Penumbra and a few other series would disagree.

Dead Space isn't survival horror.

If you can rape a game into the ground with pro shooter skills, it is not survival horror. Dead Space is basically third person Doom 3 with massive glowing weakpoints.

Penumbra... eh... a buggy, broken game from an obscure European developer that fits the genre through only the broadest of definitions. I'd say it's a first person psychological thriller.

The latest Silent Hill suffers from the same problems Dead Space did. You can rape the shit out of the game if you're awesome at shooters, and it just plain isn't scary (hell, even the boss fights weren't tense).

Food for thought:

They're never going to release legit survival horror games like the early Resident Evils/Silent Hills again, because that gameplay no longer lends itself to the masses. One of the biggest reasons is that the older games had very awkward controls and camera angles, which seriously ramped up the intensity you'd feel in any situation.

Give the player fluid character controls and an over the shoulder camera and you're depriving him a huge portion of that intensity.

I bought:

Zeno Clash 3,-(only 18 hours left!!!)
Broken Sword Twin Pack 3.05,-
Aquanox 1+2 5.99,-

definitly worth it.

So the only way a game can be survival horror is if it has an atrocious camera / control scheme? Give me a break.

The titles I listed are survival horror. They offer little in the way of ammunition, trap you in claustrophobic environments and have a definite horror streak to them.... ie: You survive in a horrific / horrible situation.

There have been few first-person and third-person survival horror games. Sadly, Resident Evil 4 and 5 are not some of them.

But if you think you can't get a survival horror with first or third-person views then you'd be wrong.

I wouldn't be able to say my opinion on Dead Space, because I haven't played much of it.

Dead Space is... ehhh. It isn't really Survival Horror. It tries to be scary at times, but it's best described as a synergy of System Shock 2's story with Resident Evil 4's gameplay and difficulty. Your main concern is rationing ammo and upgrading weapons to better ration ammo.

NOTE: I'm not saying it isn't a good game. It's a very fun game, and I look forward to the sequel. There's a book coming out July 1st I may pick up.

damnit, I should've bought the Deus Ex pack. some of these bigger packs look pretty attractive, but it's still a lot of money for only a few interesting games. too much crap thrown in there.

anyone with any experience playing Deus Ex on a modern system (Win 7 to be more specific)?

All I know is Deus Ex 2 is a pain to run on a dual/quad core processor. :P
Haven't seen any major problems with Deus Ex running on modern systems.

Okay, another question.

Gothic 2 and 3? Any good? I know everyone loves 1 but are the other two worth it? Yea, there's a thread on them, but this is related since I can buy both of them for 2$ bundled.

Okay, so at that price, i probably should just do it.

Was looking to pick up Civ 4 plus it's expansions and lo! and behold, the whole shebang for 10 bucks. Thanks for the heads up!

Gothic 3 has mixed reception. Some people really like it, others hate it. A bit like marmite really.
If you do give it a wizz though make sure to download the latest patch, Interplay and Beth games have nothing on this baby when it comes to bugs.

Really? I always saw it as the worst (except for all the spin-offs like Gun Survivor). RE5 has terrible AI and is even more departed from the "horror" aspect than RE4 was (at least that one had regenerators).

It was one of the worst in the "numbered" line of RE games, that is for sure. This however coming from someone who has been playing the series since its PSX glory days so I am stuck to the old ways.

It is ok though, about a month before RE5 was even released Jun Takeuchi said he recognized that Resident Evil could not continue as it was going with the direction of 4/5 and that 6 will be a "complete reboot" of the franchise. Granted he also said it could be another 4-8 years before we see an official "RE6" so we got a while. :P

Not to say RE5 is not a fun game, it is in a mindless shooter sort of way. It is very fitting for an age of run and gun console kiddie shooters. Great fun especially if you have a friend to run through it with.

Damn, I've gotta get in on some of these Steam deals.

Tropico 3 for like $8. Men of War Gold Edition for just under $9. Plus the big full-studio packs are great value. 2K Collection for example is $90 right now, when any other time it's in the $300-some range. The great Tripwire games, though already cheap, are half-off right now as well.

I grabbed the Overlord games, $5 for a set of games that was originally $30 is just to stupid good not to get.

I need to go check and see if Left 4 Dead 2 is on sell, I said next time it went down in price I was gonna grab it.
