Interplay counters Bethesda's claims

In the opinion of members here who work in this type of business, does Interplay honestly have a chance to actually succeed, or is this just some court drama until Bethesda actually gets what it wants?

Fanart
Disney

The worst thing was that apparently they knew about the Disney plagiarism before release and never dealt with it. That's just begging for a legal ax to come down on your neck.

As for the fanart, a guy at HQ found it on the internet assumed it was official art so he sent it over to their Chinese studio (who apparently cranks out a lot) without sending it through their legal department. All he got for doing that was a slap on the wrist.

Granted, this was all Gameloft, the studio it was outsourced to, but it says something about Interplay for outsourcing to such a studio. The thread has a few other interesting tidbits, such as Interplay providing none of the materials from the previous teams who'd worked on the games (which is why not many of the special edition levels made it), so it's not bad to sift through.

Gameloft isn't a shady studio, they're pretty big (thousands of employees, multi million dollar revenues) and have backing from Ubisoft if memory serves right. They've ported Earthworm Jim to iOS as well so I'm assuming the relation they already had with Interplay allowed them to work on a remake.

Not sure why the original assets weren't handed over but I assume they must not be readily available?

It's a pretty crappy HD remake, the production values just aren't there. Much of the graphical assets appear to be traces of the original pixels, so they simply look vectored and not very good. Other assets were stolen, which is even worse. Sure, they added a few decent things but if you want to see what a good HD remake looks like then you need to look no further than Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

Always loved how silly and long most updated SF titles are - Super Turbo Street Fighter Extreme Alpha HD bla bla bla.

I've seen worse, TMNT: Reshelled comes to mind.

I wouldn't compare Street Fighter to Earthworm Jim though since Street Fighter is a guaranteed seller so they have the leverage and motivation to put a ton of resources behind something like that (and it shows). Earthworm Jim on the other hand was dormant for quite some time, it doesn't have the same "safety net" if you will.

Maybe I haven't looked at the art very closely, but it didn't look too bad in motion. But again, I would have preferred a "nostalgia mode" just to make it a complete package.

Edit: Also realized Interplay's response uses the Poker example. Win.

Better? Probably. Good? Hell, no. It's also because 3-frame animations don't mix well with ultra crisp graphics but nonetheless this looks good to you?

Also certain characters change slightly proportions between certain animations. Gh.

Fair enough, they definitely could have used additional frames in many of the animations. Maybe it was about not changing the tells or hit boxes? Not sure that there is really a good reason.

Sirlin said in his blog post about Evolution 2009 that he thought that there was a weird PS3 bug that turned all of his Rekka punches with Fei Long into fierce punches. That said, he couldn't actually figure out what the bug was, if it actually existed, but that he wanted to see only 360s at the next year's event. He also mentioned some issues that other people were having and that the game for sure a different speed. It may be a bad port to the PS3 for some shitty reason and it may have since been fixxed.

Whoops, sorry. I provided those links only for the screens, I should have mentioned it. :P

Yep, it was because of that. Especially for characters like Sagat adding more frames would have changed a lot of things in terms of high level play.
