Is there nobody who enjoys both?!

This is what games are nowadays anyway, what the people in the 90's thought all games where like.

Honestly, I say don't blame the developer blame the consumer, after all it's the consumers that want more of it.

I blame both.

I only blame the developer. While it's depressing, I can't really fault the consumers for liking what they like, but it is most certainly the developer that has chosen to stomp all over the IP and make generic TES clones using the Fallout assets. That's all on them, the consumer had no part in that... It's no different than a producer buying a major band with a history and following, and stipulating a change to all future tracks from them; like mandating Foo Fighters to only release Dubstep in their subsequent albums... Yeah, some original fans ~may like it, and they will get new fans; but the core fanbase would likely fall away... them having ruined it.

I think a big issue is that as long as AAA is a thing then game production costs are going to climb endlessly. So you need to always be pursuing a larger and larger audience, since game prices have been static for a long time. As far as "the people you can clearly convince to put down $60 on a video game" you have this large group of "gamer" types who will eat up an unlimited number of power fantasies that tell them how special and important and badass they are. So that Fallout 3 became a really easy game about shooting dudes in the face and saving a small corner of the world while you're constantly told how great you are by the man on the radio is somewhat understandable and perhaps even forgivable.

But what this does not excuse, however, is the poor writing, characterization, and lack of interesting choices. It's not like anybody is going to be turned off from your game because the writing is good.

Developers wouldn't get away with it if the consumers even cared at all. So it's their fault too.

The amount of people complaining about New Vegas having consequences is waaaay too big for this to be true.

That's just your whiny, entitled core of "gamers" who demand to be catered to whenever they want to be, not really an issue of the writing.

Hopefully when AAA collapses, as it inevitably will, that group of folks will find another hobby.

FOPOS is a terrible example.. "We did better than FOPOS', isn't much of an achievement really.

Looks like a pretty common wish to me

Eh, didn't compose my original post here properly. The main reason I ever gave Fallout 3&NV a try was to satisfy my hunger to walk around in T-51b once more with a 3D twist and I was horribly disappointed. Apart from poor writing, inane characters and everything crammed together at arms length making that desolate feel of an empty wasteland non-existent, walking around in any power armor in F3&NV is underwhelmingly lackluster. Bad animations, clippings, no mechanical movement sound (yes I'm aware of a mod but it's only for footsteps, last I remember which was more than 5 years ago) and most importantly: Lack of mechanics from the first two Fallouts, things that used to make T-51b ACTUALLY eat small arms fire for breakfast, Damage Resistance and Damage Threshold.

Hope this clears up some misconceptions about me, if not then. Well was worth a try, I'm not here to argue with anyone nor do I seek enemies or friends. Just telling my side of the story and my opinion coupled with facts.

Its important for people to bring specific grievances and support for game mechanics. Only this way can we have healthy discourse.

And yes, I know we, at NMA, have explained our side to death.

The writing was good/decent for NV, shit for FO3 and I agree with the power armour. One thing Fallout 4 looks like it will fix, at the expense of good writing and a great story.

Cooking meth, probably.
Haha too funny but you're probably right about that. A bit off topic but who was the poster that kept posting about how they hated the MattLetsPlay guy? I remember you were asking them why they kept posting about him like they had an obsession with the guy.

The feeling of being a real supersoldier/walking tank with a power armor on is probably the only thing Fallout 4 nailed.

Don't speak too soon -you haven't played it. Though I do agree, it looks pleasing.

It's kind of the opposite of what I want from Fallout thought. Fallout speaks to me because it presents a world in which you are vulnerable, you need to observe your surroundings, think, and proceed carefully because the world you're living in is awful. The triumph of eventually comings to master it is only meaningful because you've spent that time worrying about what's on the next level or in that cave, but needing to go in there anyway because you needed supplies.

Unless the trailer is really misleading, it seems like they're giving you the power armor really early in Fallout 4 and unless that's just a demonstration of its power, to then take it away from you and give you a quest to scavenge the materials you need to repair it, that's going to sort of ruin the core appeal of Fallout for me.

There are a ton of games where you play a supersoldier/walking tank, and relatively few where you are vulnerable in a blasted hellscape and need to survive mostly through your wits. I don't like the notion of one of the latter turning into one of the former.

Why does it seem that this is the case?

The E3 gameplay trailer implies that you get the power armor shortly after meeting Preston Garvey (the leader of the Minutemen) who is a major NPC so I'm assuming you meet him relatively early in the game, particularly since when you meet him he's in dire straits so this is presumably your introduction to the Minutemen and their questline is to help them establish a better position in the wastes.
